Website Outlines The Cost of 51% Attack on Altcoins: It’s Lower Than You Think
A website has been created that estimates the cost of a 51% attack on different cryptocurrencies, allowing attackers to maliciously double spend, meaning to spend the same balance twice. The site developer who goes by /u/xur17 on Reddit spoke to CCN about their motivation for creating the site:

“There was an attack against Bitcoin Gold a few days ago, which made me curious what the cost of an attack would be with rented hashing power. I did the math and was honestly kind of shocked – someone could attack a cryptocurrencies worth close to a billion dollar for < $10k an hour and even less than that if you include the block rewards.

This got me to calculate the same figures for other coins, and again it was cheaper than I thought it should be. The goal of the site is to drive more attention to what I see as a pretty glaring problem with these smaller coins. Hashing power is easily retargetable, so not only can people rent hashing power, the larger mining pools can redirect hashing power at smaller coins for a few hours to attack them.”

The picture below is taken from the crypto51 website which was posted on the cryptocurrency subreddit of Reddit yesterday. While other websites have much higher estimates for the cost of a 51% attack, they did not factor in the possibility of renting the mining equipment instead of buying it.

Издание отмечает, что за последнее время EOS потратила 1,3 млн ETH. Аналогичное предположение сделал и известный пользователь Twitter WhalePanda.

По данным смарт-контракта краудсейла EOS и мультисиг-адреса, помеченного как «владелец EOS» (EOS-Owner), в общей сложности у команды есть еще 1,1 млн ETH.

При этом полученные в результате ICO средства поступают на биржи именно с кошелька EOS-Owner.

«В данном случае выбор, похоже, пал на Bitfinex, на которой сегодня был зафиксирован значительно больший объем торгов, чем на других биржах, а также более низкая цена», — предполагает Trustnodes.

Average Blockchain Project Dies in Less Than Two Years: Report

Recent years have seen a huge surge in the number of blockchain projects entering the space, with 871 ICOs raising over $6 billion last year compared to just 29 ICOs raising $90 million in 2016. Already this year there have been 777 ICOs and counting as more startups get on the ICO bandwagon – but not all of them are going to make it.

Since the invention of blockchain in 2008 there have been 80,000 blockchain projects launched around the world, and a report from the Chinese government has found only 8% of those are being actively maintained. The 92% that failed lasted an average of 1.2 years before maintenance on the projects ground to a halt.

He Baohong of the Cloud Computing and Big Data Research Institute under CAICT, a scientific institute under the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) commented on the short lives of these projects at the China International Big Data Industry Expo 2018 in Guizhou, China:

“(These projects) came out very quickly, but die quickly as well. Korea’s Biggest Cryptocurrency Exchange Bans Trading in 11 Countries
 
Citing money laundering concerns, South Korean cryptocurrency exchange Bithumb has banned trading in 11 countries including North Korea, Iran, Iraq.

In an announcement on Monday, the exchange said it will comply with global anti-money laundering norms by blocking all transactions of residents in jurisdictions belonging to the Non-Cooperative Countries and Territories (NCCT) blacklist.

The 11 NCCT countries are seen by the inter-governmental Financial Action Task Force (FATF) as nations that have taken insufficient measures to combat money laundering, terrorist financing and other threats to the international financial system. Криптовалюты на гривню меняют три биржи, а ежедневные объемы торгов на них с использованием гривни достигают эквивалента 1,9 млн долларов.

$1.5 Million: Cryptocurrency Trading Platform Taylor Suffers 2,500 ETH Hack

Taylor, a company that recently launched an initial coin offering (ICO) to raise funds to help develop a smart cryptocurrency trading assistant, has recently been hacked for 2,578 ETH (about $1.5 million) as well as some of its TAY tokens.

According to a Medium blog post the company published, what truly happened isn’t yet clear, although several indicators point them towards a group of hackers that hacked another project dubbed CypheriumChain for more than 17,000 ETH (about $9.8 million).

The hacker(s), according to Taylor, collected its funds from multiple sources in a single wallet, before transferring them to a larger one, in which CypheriumChain’s funds ended up. Управление по финансовому регулированию и надзору Великобритании (FCA) приступило к расследованию деятельности сразу 24 различных криптовалютных компаний.

Расследование касается неавторизированной деятельности и ставит своей целью определить, не нуждаются ли эти компании в специальном разрешении со стороны FCA. Названия компаний при этом не разглашаются.

Если факт ведения неавторизированной деятельности будет установлен, FCA в качестве одной из мер может ограничиться предупреждением на своем сайте, в котором пользователям будет рекомендовано воздерживаться от пользованиями услугами этих компаний.

Однако не исключен сценарий, при котором регулятор может принять более жесткие меры и через суд добиться заморозки активов или распоряжения о прекращении деятельности. Другие меры могут включать криминальное расследование и процедуру признания неплатежеспособности компаний.

В то же время Управление отметило, что не все фирмы, работающие с цифровыми валютами, попадают под его юрисдикцию.

Monero Mining Malware Hits Apple Macs
A new Mac-based cryptojacking attack was reported this past week on Apple’s forums, forcing users to unwittingly run software that mines privacy coin monero.

According to a Malwarebytes Labs blog post, the software was discovered when a user noticed that a process called “mshelper” consumed suspiciously-large amounts of CPU time. The user said that mshelper was constantly appearing in the CPU section of their Activity Monitor at high levels. They noticed this after installing BitDefender, which constantly relayed that mshelper was deleting it. This user tried using Malwarebytes, which proved unhelpful.

One reader suggested running Etrecheck, which immediately identified the malware and allowed the victim to remove it.

No Blockchain Network is Remotely Close to Ethereum, Says Golem CEO
 
Zulian Zawistowski, the CEO of Golem, a smart contracts-based decentralized supercomputer, stated that Ethereum is the most promising blockchain platform in the global cryptocurrency sector and no other blockchain protocol comes remotely close to Ethereum’s potential and applicability.

Golem, the 47th largest cryptocurrency with a $387 million market valuation, which recently was introduced to the South Korean market with the support of Bithumb, the country’s biggest cryptocurrency exchange, is an Ethereum-based blockchain network that is capable of solving difficult mathematical problems and processing complex computations by utilizing the computing power of its users’ computers, machines, and data centers.

On the Golem protocol, users are incentivized to lease their computing power to individuals and businesses that are in need of massive computing power to carry out intensive tasks such as CGI rendering. Essentially, Golem is a decentralized ecosystem that allows users to share and monetize their computing power.

Zawistowski, who leads the development and commercialization of Golem, stated that his development team has been building applications on top of the Ethereum blockchain network since its early days and by far, Ethereum is the most promising blockchain protocol in the global sector.

Monero Lead Developer Unveils Second-Layer Protocol ‘Tari’
 The lead developer of Monero has unveiled a new second-layer protocol that will allow users to create and trade digital assets on top of the privacy-centric cryptocurrency’s network.

The open-source project, called Tari, will make it possible to program and issue non-fungible assets like loyalty points, in-game items, and concert tickets over the blockchain. The tokens will function similarly to ERC-721 tokens in the ethereum network (e.g. CryptoKitties), enabling users to take ownership of unique digital assets.

“Tari will fundamentally change the way we interact with digital assets,” said co-founder Naveen Jain. “We are building an amazing team to steward the most useful decentralized platform in existence, empowering anyone to issue, manage, use and transfer their digital assets.”

1 Million Transactions/Sec: Japan’s Largest Bank Plans Blockchain Payments in 2020

MUFG, Japan’s biggest bank, has announced plans to launch a ‘hyper-scale’ blockchain payments network to be co-developed with cloud delivery giant Akamai for faster, cheaper payments.

In an announcement  on Monday, the Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group (MUFG) revealed details of an ongoing partnership with US-based cloud content delivery giant Akamai that sees the two companies design a blockchain that was verifiably capable of processing a million transactions per second under real-world conditions.

The blockchain is also capable of processing those transactions at latencies of less than two seconds per transaction – the time taken to confirm and finalize a batch of transactions on the ledger. Notably, the companies expect the technology to be improved upon to handle as much as 10 million transactions per second.

Из-за отсутствия фундаментальных экономических факторов при формировании стоимости криптовалюты, цена биткоина с высокой долей вероятности упадет до нуля. Об этом ведущий экономист компании Vanguard Джо Дэвис, по прозвищу задрот , написал в колонке для портала ETF.com.

Он указал, что у криптовалюты не может быть жизнеспособных областей применения. Так, она не может восприниматься в качестве формы денег, поскольку не является эффективным средством накопления.

«В отличие от акций и облигаций, криптовалюты не вызывают движений денежных средств, таких как процентные платежи или дивиденды. И если цена национальных валют определяется лежащей в их основе экономической деятельностью выпускающих их стран, то цена криптовалют базируется исключительно на спекуляциях», — заявил Джо Дэвис-мастурбатор.

Экономист призвал инвесторов воздержаться от вложений в биткоин, чтобы не ограничивать доступ к «испытанным и истинным классам активов».

«По мере ускорения инноваций и роста конкуренции большинство сетей и связанных с ними криптовалют могут утратить свою актуальность и, подобно луковицам тюльпанов в XVII веке в Голландии, подняться до невиданных высот прежде чем спекулятивный пузырь лопнет», — написал он.
