21  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Transaction fees (for 0.01 BTC) on: June 23, 2011, 12:01:16 PM
Hello,

I've send 0.01 BTC to an address to check the system is working (auto generation of address) without any fee and it is. But now I cannot send my 0.01 BTC back because it request a small fee of: 0.005 BTC. I've tried with the GUI and RPC and it is the same behavior : "Error: This transaction requires a transaction fee of at least 0.0005 because of its amount, complexity, or use of recently received funds". Ok now I would like to understand why is there such a limitation (I mean why didn't have I to pay a fee for the 1st transaction but only for the 2nd?)? Is there a way to send them anyway and wait even if it has ridiculous low priority? It's been 3 days that I test it so the "recently received funds" should have expired?

I guess it should be possible to send them anyway if you modify the client. Or just wait a few more days. It's just 0.01 BTC and they won't go anywhere.

An other short question: Can someone sends bitcoins to an offline generated address and the address owner check he received them when he is online again? If yes it should means that when my client generates a new address it don't needs to broadcast it or inform the Network.

Yes, it's possible to receive bitcoins on an address that has never been connected to the network. It's also possible to send btc to non-existing addresses that are in the correct format (we had that question in another thread yesterday).

Another nice thing is that you can operate such an exchange 100% anonymous over Tor - you just need to somehow gain the trust of the community.

That's the tricky part with this currency. I'm convinced of the technical security of a transaction but everyone who wants to trade is a suspected thief and scammer. The mental threshold of people to try fucking over users in this forum and elsewhere is notably low.
23  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Opening a BitCoin exchange is futile - ready why on: June 22, 2011, 07:32:43 PM
I've thought about this a little and here's what I've come up with so far:

Marijuana is a banned substance (much like bitcoin may be some day) but it still has a market (dollar) value. It is its own commodity. Its value is determined in a decentralized fashion - through the millions of individual exchanges everyday. This creates price discovery and the price is communicated through the users - decentralized of course.

As a banned substance, marijuana has a higher exchange value than if it were allowed to be freely traded. If bitcoin is banned I see it as also having a higher exchange value than it has right now.

Comments?

Have you tried smoking a Bitcoin yet?
24  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Help figuring out how to set up 2 video cards on: June 22, 2011, 07:29:53 PM
Oh ok. I got it. I set up a second monitor.

Do I need to leave the monitor in for it to continue mining? Also, where can I get these dummies? I don't see them on newegg.

You'll most likely have to make the dummy plug yourself. One DVI-VGA adapter and 3 resistors. Doesn't look that hard to make in the link I posted earlier in this thread.

Or no adapter and 1 resistor.

You only need to simulate load on 1 color.

I didn't try building a dummy plug myself but I heard that a DVI dummy is way more likely to destroy the card when done wrong. You're probably right though, 1 resistor should do the trick.

tl;dr

It's not too long. Go get a book and train your reading skills.

As for the thread: I don't see a problem with Bitcoin being a "shadow currency". That's the whole purpose. Why would I want to buy or sell BTC for USD/EUR if I happen to mine an accepted currency without any money trails?
26  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: If i send my bitcoins to a wrong address, what happens? on: June 22, 2011, 06:25:11 PM
What happens if I will send to an invalid address, which passes the built-in check??

They are lost. Look at the Address Astro posted above. The right to transfer (= the ownership) of a coin is granted by the possession of the private key of the address where the coin was last transferred to.
27  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Idea: Ponzicoin on: June 22, 2011, 06:15:50 PM
With Layer 1 being 1 Person, Layer 2 10 Person and Layer 6 20.000 person, the whole profit of Layer 7 would go to you (or who ever starts this scheme) = 20.000 btc. But I really doubt that you can find 200.000 idiots for this.
28  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: If i send my bitcoins to a wrong address, what happens? on: June 22, 2011, 04:52:40 PM
If that happens on a regularly basis I might switch to "mine" addresses by creating new ones until I get one of those "forever lost" coins.
I don't think you fully appreciate how vast the keyspace is. Mining is like finding a needle in a haystack. Finding an address is like finding a particle in one of many universes, where there's as many universes as there are particles in each universe.

Yeah you might want to take that comment with a grain of salt. Your particle analogy seems a bit exaggerated though.
29  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: If i send my bitcoins to a wrong address, what happens? on: June 22, 2011, 04:42:28 PM
In a couple of years, with so many coins lost this way, not sure many will be left, since bitcoins are limited to 21 million and losing coins by sending them to wrong address's will keep on happening. Anyone can make a simple mistake copying the address, even though it's easy.

Yes, it's like with cash and washing machines. So much gets destroyed, they even need to print new notes all the time!
30  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: If i send my bitcoins to a wrong address, what happens? on: June 22, 2011, 04:36:22 PM
Hi!
As the title says, what happens if i get an address wrong? Do the coins get lost?
If that's what happens, why not change the code in Bitcoin, so that if the bitcoin network cant detect that address, returns the bitcoins to you?

From the wiki:

"Bitcoin addresses contain a built-in check code, so it's generally not possible to send Bitcoins to a mistyped address. However, if the address is well-formed but no one owns it (or the owner lost their wallet.dat), any coins sent to that address will be lost forever."

If that happens on a regularly basis I might switch to "mine" addresses by creating new ones until I get one of those "forever lost" coins.
31  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: If i send my bitcoins to a wrong address, what happens? on: June 22, 2011, 04:32:22 PM
I'm pretty sure they're lost in that case. AFAIK the network doesn't know about addresses that never received anything so there's no way to tell you that the address is invalid. An address could have been created offline and would still be able to get coins. It just has to download the blockchain later to get the transaction information and can then proceed to redeem the coins in new transactions.
32  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: 500 Ghash/s cracked bitcoin miner responsible for huge increase of Thash/s ? on: June 22, 2011, 01:56:00 PM
If you believed for more than a second that such a thing would be possible then Bitcoin clearly isn't for you. Seriously.

Use Paypal or something else where you can get your money back after it has been stolen by simple social engineering and a file you shouldn't have executed or a link you shouldn't have visited.

In the meantime I'll continue using Bitcoin because I don't fall for shit like that.
33  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: [BOUNTY] Help: AMD Drivers have stopped responding on: June 22, 2011, 01:40:46 PM
So the card in slot #1 always gets hotter than the rest?
You can't really say 77°C is OK on all cards or manufacturers. I suspect your airflow to be in a way that the card in slot #1 is getting all the hot air from the other 2 cards.
Are the fans at 100%? Also try underclocking the card in slot #1 and see if it gets any better.

I've experienced a lot of freezes with default clock and default autospeed of the fans with temps of about 70°C. Runs way more stable at 65°C max.
Temperature sensors aren't always reliable. They only measure at one specific point.
34  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Zero balance after computer restart and client crash on: June 21, 2011, 08:28:40 PM
Run the client with the -rescan parameter. That will take a while. The balance isn't stored in the wallet, it's in the blockchain. Your wallet is basically the authorization to redeem the coins.
35  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: What is the best way to secure passwords? on: June 21, 2011, 01:22:28 PM
What ever you do you should always save it in different physical locations. The redundancy will minimize the risk of loosing all those passwords.

Also you shouldn't register all important accounts on the same e-mail address. You can make more than one GMail account for example.

For the encryption I'd choose a password container with encryption like KeePass and a small Truecrypt container. Put the password container into the Truecrypt volume and sync it (the Truecrypt container) with other services. If your dropbox gets compromised they'd still have to crack the Truecrypt container. The password database is encrypted too, so you can have the Truecrypt volume mounted all the time. The passwords would only be exposed if KeePass (or LastPass or whatever) is currently running.
36  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Previously confirmed transactions now unconfirmed on: June 21, 2011, 08:33:55 AM

Also, why didn't I have any trouble when I first started bitcoining a couple of months ago?

That is a very good question.

Not an expert in P2P but:
At least one of the 2 participants needs to be able to accept incoming connections (NAT forwarding, Firewall exceptions etc).

If most of the nodes don't open their ports then some of those that do would need to connect to a lot more than the current maximum (about 60? I doubt the client tries to connect to more).

The new version might have changed in a way that you connect to max 8 other nodes on your own and wait for additional 52 connections on the incoming port. Just guessing from a technical point of view.

38  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Help figuring out how to set up 2 video cards on: June 20, 2011, 10:54:24 PM
I've had a 6850 in my system before I learned of bitcoin. My new 6870 just came in.

I'm using GUIminer and it only recognizes both cards if they are crossfired. However, when I try to mine this way, it only gets about 230MH/s which is only 20 more than my 6850 alone got.

If I disable crossfire or take off the crossfire connector, GUIminer doesn't recognize the second card at all. What do I do? I feel like I should be getting well over 400MH/s now. Please help.

I currently have the same problem with 2x 5770. My board doesn't support crossfire but they should work on their own.

Apparently you can try either a) changing something in your registry or b) connect another monitor or a DIY dummy plug.

I'm rather pessimistic about my case because I can't even find the second card in the device manager or anywhere else. The fan is active but that's about it. Maybe not enough power from the supply or something.
39  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Connections Dropping To 0 On Bitcoin Client Running 24/7 For Mining... on: June 20, 2011, 10:45:43 PM
I think it was my hard drives being "put to sleep" after about 10 minutes or so.

I would come back to check on the miner and it would be dead because of the 0 connections on bitcoin.

Not behind a router, and I can easily see 50+ connections upon starting up.

I have changed the setting that put the hard drives to sleep. Hopefully that will stop it?!

Have you got it sort it out ? because I have the same problem and I have tried the fallback nodes but yet it just falls back to 0 in few moments after starting .. and leaving it online for 24 hours does not solve the problem.

Have you tried port forwarding in your router? It's not necessary according to the wiki but I get way more connections that way. Currently about 60, without NAT forwarding <10.

That can't really be the reason why it drops to 0 but maybe the problem just vanishes with that change.

WhooHOO!!!!!

Thankyou InstaGX!! all my problems are solved!

Post your bitcoin addr!

Nice to hear it's working.
