looking for a knockoff replica of this. google searches aren't helping. any idea where i could find?

A replica should be pretty easy for you to make. Go buy the same pad of paper and a pen, print out the sign and then go to work doing some tracing. As far as counterfeiting collectors items goes, this has to be one of the easier items to replicate if someone did want such a thing. Say how much you want to pay and I’m sure someone would be willing to make you one.

I could recreate it, maybe even replicate it precisely as the original, but I need to determine the correct ink and paper.

The creator of the original evidently made 9 signed replicas and sold some on Scare City earlier.

There's 21 replicas.  They can be found on display in the offices of Chaincode Labs, Castle Island Ventures, Morgan Creek, Pubkey NYC, Coin Center, Blockchain Capital, and Paradigm, and in the private homes of other high-profile Bitcoiners.

Oh, that's interesting! It's cool that you're the host of this event. Wishing you the best of luck with the final hour of the auction!

Thank you!  It's an honor and an adrenaline rush! 🥵

Yes Congrats!, but...
"A run of 21 replica editions was created in 2019. They have all sold out for an average realized price of 0.8 BTC. The works have been widely collected among the Bitcoin community..."

How is it known for certain this is the original? Thank you.

This image offers the best proof, with donations to the BTC address starting right after the timestamp. You can inspect the handwriting by comparing it to other auction images.

Those near Pubkey can inspect the sign IRL on the final auction day.

'Bitcoin Sign Guy'  will also issue a COA in buyer's preferred format.

Hopefully this helps!

Scarce City, Congrats on being selected to auction this item. It is absolutely iconic in the bitcoin history. I laugh every time I see clips of Yellen and the sign being held up.

Also want to say this, I love your site and the artistic freedom you promote. If I was an artistic creator, then your site would be a so helpful.

I love that I can see previous auctions and the results. I hope you never remove this.

Own the original ‘Buy Bitcoin’ sign held behind Federal Reserve Chair Janet Yellen during her 2017 Congressional testimony.

Hastily drawn on a yellow legal pad, this iconic drawing marked Bitcoin’s intrusion into the global monetary landscape. The sign is one of few widely-recognized physical Bitcoin artifacts, given Bitcoin’s virtual nature. Beloved by Bitcoin enthusiasts, the sign has spawned countless memes, derivative works, and imitation stunts

Auction Start: Today, April 18, 12 pm ET (16:00 UTC)
Auction End: Wednesday, April 24, 7 pm ET (23:00 UTC)

Pubkey Bar in NYC will host the auction ending at 6pm on Wednesday April 24th.
The sign will be on public display at Pubkey throughout the auction.

Here's my review. First, Scarce City has been around awhile. I would not call it new at this point. New to the public perhaps but they have been the "go to" auction site for crypto collectibles for a longer time than most.

Second, there is a solid argument to make that Scarce City is more advantageous to sell your item than Ebay or Stack's Bowers (or other auction houses). With Ebay, you pay 17% fee and deal with customers directly, which is always an adventure. With Stacks and others, they do a good job of grading and providing a new audience of buyers, but their true incentive is to sell volume and the audience doesn't have much maturity to understand what they are buying. It's kind of a crap shoot. Scarce City on the other hand started with Crypto Collectibles as a passion. They do a great job and the audience knows what they are looking for and what they are worth.

Finally, the buying experience is awesome. Easy. I had some questions one time and got immediate personal responses. I love that Scarce City, with this announcement, is expanding to sell everyday items. This is a huge advantage to sellers that want to sell items and receive BTC.

I have no dog in the hunt at all other than wanting cool businesses that support physical bitcoins as much as possible.

Steeley

Thank you for your kind words and support!
13  Economy / Collectibles / Re: Auction anything (legal) for bitcoin on: February 09, 2024, 03:02:38 PM
is there an option to leave feedback for a buyer or seller? about negative or positive experiences with members ?

Not yet. Initial buyer and seller accountability is from the refundable BTC listing and bidding deposits.

If a seller breaks Seller Guidelines, they lose their listing deposit.
https://satscrap.com/seller-guidelines

If a bidder doesn't pay their bid, they lose their bid deposits.

As long as both parties play by the rules, their collateral is refunded.

We'll likely add the ability for power sellers to opt into a reputation system over time. We want to be careful to do it in a way that cannot be faked and does not compromise privacy.
14  Economy / Collectibles / Re: Auction anything (legal) for bitcoin on: February 09, 2024, 02:57:49 PM
I like the idea its like ebay but paid in bitcoin. I definitely think you need a specific category for bitcoin collectibles and physical bitcoin. Hard to know if your getting the best price if buyers have to search through baseball cards and other "crap". Very specific buyers looking for our stuff.

Also what is the criteria for legal merchandise?

Scarce City is our more niche marketplace for Bitcoin art and collectibles. SatsCrap is meant for everything else (although there's nothing stopping Bitcoin art/collectibles from being listed there as well) -- We hope to see specific niche categories organically develop on SatsCrap over time and we'll prioritize development to support them.

The contraband list is linked here. It's essentially copy pasta from Ebay to keep things safe and simple to start. We'll review over time and make adjustments. Let us know if there's a specific category/item you think we should take a second look at.

Does this site give 1099 or otherwise report to state and/or federal agencies?  If so, what is threshold.

No.
16  Economy / Collectibles / Re: Auction anything (legal) for bitcoin on: February 09, 2024, 02:48:21 PM
We've just launched a bunch of features on our new marketplace SatsCrap.com that make it as easy as possible to sell any legal physical goods for bitcoin.
Can digital items also be sold or only physical?
Different things can be legal in one country/state and illegal in another, and you have a very long list of contraband items:
https://satscrap.com/seller-guidelines

To start, SatsCrap only supports physical items. We're open to digital items if they make sense. ScarceCity is always open to hosting drops for (bitcoin) digital drops, but consider these drops are curated. Here's the submission form: https://scarce.city/submissions

We copied Ebay's contraband items to keep things safe and simple in the beginning. We'll continuously review the list and make adjustments where we feel comfortable. Let us know if there's anything there you think we should take a second look at.

Any feedback is greatly appreciated.
I think you need to add search field, that would make finding items to buy much easier.
You should also enable payment with Lightning Network and/or Liquid Network (L-BTC), especially important when on-chain fees are high.

Yes, for sure we'll be adding a search field soon. There are less than 100 listings right now so it's pretty easy to scroll through in the meantime.

Lightning is supported for all bitcoin payments. We're open to supporting Liquid as adoption and infrastructure improves.

Thanks for the feedback

The 1% collateral makes me hesitant for a new site without many reviews.

Totally understood.

It's the same model we've used on Scarce.City to host thousands of auctions over the past 3+ years. While of course there is trust involved, we try to minimize it by keeping collateral requirements to a minimum. I think it's fair to say trust is involved in the exchange of any physical items.

The founding team (Chris Tramount and Aryan Jabbari) is fully doxed and easy to find with simple searches. We put our reputations on the line to mitigate trust concerns.

I don't see a link on scarce.city to this new site, am I missing it?

It's not linked on Scarce.City yet. While we'll likely link it eventually, it's meant to be an independent site.

Scarce City for Fine Bitcoin Goods
SatsCrap for eveything else (although there's nothing stopping Bitcoin art/collectibles from being listed there as well)

20  Economy / Collectibles / Re: Heads up cool bitcoin stuff auction at Scarce.City on: January 13, 2024, 06:27:51 PM
Hey all, Chris from Scarce City here.

I appreciate the comments. These types of threads help us find opportunities for improvement. I'll address some of the points of confusion and concerns, as well share some solutions we're implementing.

First, regarding the United Nodes auction -- the piece is not in our possession and it was fully communicated to the seller that it was a No Reserve auction. For these types of sales, we've required sellers to have a strong Twitter/BT reputation and relied on them to act in the interest of maintaining their reputation to deliver the goods according to auction terms. I'm still hopeful that LitLit will act in the interest of their reputation and come through on the sale but the doubt raised has made it clear that our reputation system is not enough.

Effective immediately, sellers with reputations that are at all questionable will be required to deposit BTC collateral with their auctions or escrow (with MJ). They'll forfeit their collateral if they do not deliver the goods and escrowed items will be delivered to the buyer, according to auction terms.

Re starting reserve prices, we allow them in some circumstances -- for artists who are voted into our artist group (by other artists), for events where the event organizer is curating the auctions, and for some multi-edition auctions. Otherwise, our auctions are No Reserve. The reason is we put a ton of work into curating auctions, crafting auction pages, and promoting EVERY auction across our newsletter, twitter, and telegram. It only makes sense for us to put in that work if the item sells. Also, through the thousands of auctions we've run, we've seen that No Reserve auction perform better on average and are way more fun to participate in.

That said, we understand that starting reserve prices make sense for some auctions and are building an option for that (outside of Scarce.City). In the meantime, sellers have the option to list items in our marketplace for a fixed price.

Re hidden reserves, I see how they make sense for some other auction platforms but we don't think it's an acceptable bidder experience with our collateral-based auction system. The most common and permissionless way to bid on Scarce City is by depositing a small amount of BTC with your bid (refunded as long as winning bid is paid). Many bidders deposit collateral over Lightning but some pay high fees to deposit onchain. It's a terrible experience to spend sats to bid, not to mention get emotionally involved in the auction, place the highest bid and still not win the auction because there's a hidden reserve. We're open to ideas on how to make it work but so far have not found a good enough solution.

Finally, on the design criticism, we're constantly making improvements and have a long list of improvements to make on our roadmap. Any specific feedback to help us prioritize improvements is always greatly appreciated.

I hope that helps clarify how we're approaching things. Understand that we're a small scrappy team doing our best to build a platform that offers the best experience for buyers and sellers while staying true to Bitcoin values and promoting Bitcoin culture. There are many challenges that don't have solutions, only tradeoffs.

Many thanks to all of you who are patient with us and have supported us along the way.

Chris
