2061  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Verifying Bitcoin Core on: October 09, 2017, 06:19:00 PM
This is probably a stupid question that is answered elsewhere, but since this is the beginner forum, I'll ask  Wink

Why would I need to download bitcoin core? I have been trading BTC and other crypo and moving my tokens to wallets but never had a need to download something called Bitcoin core. Again, probably a really obvious answer, but I'm new...
Bitcoin Core (and other wallet software) allow you to have full control of your Bitcoin by giving you full control of your private keys. You don't need to use it, but it allows for the some of the best security and privacy. Bitcoin Core is also a full node software. This means that it fully validates every single block and transaction. Bitcoin Core nodes make up the backbone of the Bitcoin network; without nodes, transactions and blocks would not be able to propagate well and the network would not be decentralized.
2062  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: i had a doubt from a long time .............. on: October 09, 2017, 05:09:20 PM
An address is a visualization of a Public Key.
Each Public Key has ONE correspondending private key ("which holds the BTC").
That is untrue.  Each P2PKH public key has on average 296 possible private keys.  In all likelihood you will only ever know 1 of them, but many more exist.
No, that statement is true. Each ADDRESS has on average 296. Each public key has exactly one private key and vice versa. Public keys and addresses are not the same thing.
2063  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Legacy vs Segwit wallets. Whats the difference ? on: October 09, 2017, 02:18:58 PM
So ive always had my bitcoin in my hardware wallet. Now there are 2 options: Legacy and Segwit. Whats the actual difference ?
Legacy means that you will be using addresses of the form 1... Segwit means that you will be using addresses of the form 3... or bc1... (one is for P2SH nested segwit and the other is for native segwit). Note that 3... addresses are for P2SH addresses in general and are not just for segwit. bc1... addresses are for segwit specifically but not all wallets support it yet.

1. Can i transfer my btc from Legacy to Segwit as a normal BTC transfer ?
Yes.

2a. Does it make a different where i hold my bitcoins ?
Yes. When you want to send money, transaction fees for spending a segwit output will likely be lower from spending a legacy output.

2b. Do they use the same hashpower ?
Hashpower and addresses are unrelated. In fact, addresses don't even exist on the network; they are just a human abstraction that tells the wallet what to put in the output script of an output.

3. Considering segwit was activated, why my BTCs are not automatically on the Segwit chain (are there actually 2 chains ?)
No, no there are not two chains. Segwit is activated on the Bitcoin blockchain.

4. Whats my play ?
If you want to use segwit, get some segwit addresses and begin giving them out to people when you want to be paid. You can also make a transaction sending your coins to segwit addresses in your wallet. If you don't want to use segwit, then do nothing. Either way is safe.
2064  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: i had a doubt from a long time .............. on: October 09, 2017, 02:13:56 PM
After rereading his post, it comes to me that he might talk about the addresses he sees in a (HD) wallet. There you usually have one priv key, and a set of derived pubkeys.
No, that's not true. With an HD wallet, you still have a private key and public key for every single address. All an HD wallet is is that you have a seed from which all over private keys in your wallet are derived. Addresses and public keys still work in the same way as randomly generated private keys.
2065  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Share your opinions of Lightning on: October 09, 2017, 02:03:19 AM
That being said, after some research into the proposed solution of the Bitcoin core team,
The lightning network is not something that was proposed by or being worked on by Bitcoin Core developers.

For example, even though in the whitepaper for Lightning Networks (LNs) the development team specified that a blocksize increase is still needed, why is there so much resistance to using it now to mitigate full blocks?
Because we don't know how Segwit and the deployment of LN is going to effect the economy and the transactional capacity. There are consequences to increasing the block size (and there are positives to having full blocks and a mempool that is not emptied on every block) which we do not think are worth having for a larger block size limit. The lightning network is not yet deployed and increasing the block size limit further may be more harmful than not.

This creates a new and powerfull actor in the Bitcoin economy: these liquidity hubs. They can broadcast, or not broadcast when they want to the main chain.
Not really. The people who are connected to those hubs can close channels any time that they want. So if a hub is being a dick and refusing to close a channel, then you can close it yourself, albeit you will need to wait a little bit before you can access your coins. Likewise you can do the same the the hub. Furthermore, if a hub were to be engaging in that behavior, many people would likely just stop using them. They would close their channels with that hub and route payments through someone else. Anyone can be a hub, so there likely won't be a shortage of alternative hubs to use and that people are simultaneously connected to.

Furthermore, the most experienced and trusted source of LNs will become Blockstream who can therefore probably build the best LN.
What makes you think that? There are at least 2 other organizations besides Blockstream who are building software for LN. They employ more people than Blockstream does and all of them are collaborating on making their software compatible via the Lightning RFC spec.

In the best case scenario there will be a handfull of these LN providers, is this desirable? Blockstream would be behind core, the main LN and could have influence over miners through non-broadcasting, is this desirable?
You overestimate the manpower and influence of Blockstream.

First of all, as I said earlier, anyone can be a LN hub. You don't and shouldn't be connected to only one hub. There will certainly be other hubs set up by the other LN developers for people to use.

Secondly, Blockstream is not behind Bitcoin Core nor do they control Bitcoin Core in any way, shape, or form.
2066  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Node error : Assertion 'nIds != nNew' failed on: October 08, 2017, 07:45:04 PM
Delete the files peers.dat and banlist.dat which can be found in the Bitcoin Core datadir. Then start Bitcoin Core.
2067  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Bitcoin-cli move? on: October 08, 2017, 03:35:32 PM
Soon? 2 years or more we wait it's great event, but we got just segwit))
Which version we can get new functionality?
Every version of Bitcoin Core brings new functionality. The accounts system is not a consensus rule, it is an internal Bitcoin Core thing so it will be removed when it is implemented. This is very different from Segwit which is a consensus rule and required activation from the rest of the network.
2068  Bitcoin / Armory / Re: armory won't sync on: October 08, 2017, 04:53:47 AM
armory have to use bitcoin core to download block?
Yes, Armory uses Bitcoin Core and Bitcoin Core must be synced for Armory to work. Bitcoin Core must also be running when Armory is running (Armory is configured by default to run Bitcoin Core automatically).
2069  Bitcoin / BitcoinJ / Re: bitcoind AND bitcoinj as full node fails on block download, any suggestions why? on: October 08, 2017, 04:42:05 AM
Can you please post your code for setting up the block store?

It looks like the problem is that tally is null which implies that the implementation of fullprunedblockstore is incorrect.

I am certain that the problem you are experiencing has nothing to do with bitcoind or any settings. Rather I'm fairly certain that this problem is because it is throwing an exception when trying to validate a block which is causing the networking portion to crash and thus disconnect.
2070  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Bitcoind timing mishap? on: October 08, 2017, 04:25:48 AM
1. what is a timing mishap? i cant find any info on it ANYWHERE, maybe i am not searching right. why would this be happening?
A timing mishap in this context (with the pong message) is a pong message which has an old nonce value that is not expected. Can you please post your debug.log file with those values unredacted? Without being able to see what is actually being reported, it is hard to say what is wrong.

2. what are transaction verification flags? and how can i see them in bitcoin-cli?
Transaction verification flags are the rules that are used in validating transactions. These rules include the standardness rules and other node policy rules that are not consensus rules. You cannot see what they are in bitcoin-cli; you will have to look at the source code.

3. how can i see if bitcoind is serving the block or disconnecting before it serves the block, is there any way to get more detailed logging? or a way to snoop on the communication? can i tell who initiated the connection termination?
Run Bitcoin Core with the -debug option. You are already running with debug=net which is enough to determine whether a block is served before disconnecting. Blocks are definitely being sent before the socket is closed and disconnected.

4. can a protocol version 70000 communicate effectively with 70015?
Yes.

5. is there any reason a regtest enviornment would act differently from mainnet in regards to block/transaction flags or the way the locktimes are set? i really dont know where to even look here. all i know is bitcoind nodes sync but have timing mishaps, bitcoinj cant pull FULL .
The block and transaction verification flags have nothing to do with the networking. All consensus rules are the same, but some node policy rules are relaxed to allow for non-standard transactions. locktimes are a consensus rule.

for the record, bitcoinjs full node code mirrors satoshi's exactly, it has to, so i have read. so im not sure how it communicates but i assume the same way bitcoind clients communicate.
The protocol has changed since the full node stuff was written and it has not really been updated since. It is also experimental.
2071  Bitcoin / Armory / Re: armory won't sync on: October 08, 2017, 04:15:11 AM
Is Bitcoin Core installed? If not, install it.

If it is installed, is it running? Is it fully synced?
2072  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Bitcointalk Account price estimator on: October 08, 2017, 04:14:42 AM
How can I add this script to my site?
This is not a script. It is a server software.

Any step by step guide available?

2073  Bitcoin / Armory / Re: Connection to bitcoin core client lost....... on: October 08, 2017, 02:06:36 AM
Use Armory 0.96.3
2074  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: Unspent outputs and funds missing from Jaxx wallet while pairing Android and PC on: October 07, 2017, 08:00:46 PM
I only have the one backup phrase.  That was from when I opened the Android app and that's the phrase I used on my computer.  I'm 100% certain of that.  I mean, does everyone believe that these wallets work perfectly all of the time?  One seems to have zero recourse.  At least with a bank I would.
You have the backup phrase. Restore your wallet from that backup phrase. That's what the backup phrase is for.

Just because you don't know what you are doing does not mean that all is lost. Just because you don't know what you are doing does not mean that no one else knows what they are doing.
2075  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Getting BTC\ETH address on: October 07, 2017, 07:58:52 PM
You will get addresses when you get a wallet. The wallet software will handle all of that for you.
2076  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: transaction stuck on: October 07, 2017, 07:15:00 PM
It sounds like you sent USDT to a Bitcoin address. USDT is not Bitcoin and is incompatible with Bitcoin (although apparently it uses the same address format). It is possible to recover your coins, but that is very difficult and requires handling private keys and installing a USDT wallet. However it seems like you sent USDT to Coinbase, and it is likely that they are not able to do this. Besides the fact that it requires a lot of work, their private keys may not necessarily be accessible to be imported into a USDT wallet. Your coins are probably lost, and there certainly is no transaction that is stuck.
2077  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: Unspent outputs and funds missing from Jaxx wallet while pairing Android and PC on: October 07, 2017, 07:10:13 PM
I open a Jaxx wallet on my Android and make several deposits totaling just over 1 BTC (not chump change for me).
Then I install the PC version and the Android balance doesn't show there.  I pair the wallets per their instructions and voila - the Android balance disappears.
You paired in the wrong direction. If you scanned a QR code or entered the backup phrase from your computer onto your phone, then that is wrong. You should have entered a backup phrase from your phone onto your computer.

My understanding of these unspent outputs is that they are generally a fractional remainder of a bigger amount/transaction - that is, the final balance would NOT be the same as the amount received.
No, that is not how unspent outputs works. The final balance would only not be the same as amount received if you have spent any Bitcoin.
2078  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: unconfirmed Transaction on: October 07, 2017, 06:47:18 PM
is this only way to accelerated  Transaction or there are more services ??
Some other mining pools may also offer acceleration services. I don't remember. However any mining pool operator can accelerate transactions for you.
2079  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Moving BTC from outdated version of core and Effects on BCH on: October 07, 2017, 06:45:58 PM
so will I need to update the software first and then switch to pruned mode?
You don't have to, but I recommend that you do.

At that point how long do you think it would take to sync?
It depends on your hardware and network connection. It can take anywhere from a few hours to a few days.
2080  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Bitcoin-cli move? on: October 07, 2017, 06:44:56 PM
Thank you. If so, what is the best way to have a multi account wallet where you manage 10 - 100 - 1,000 - 100,000 accounts all with different balances?
Use your own account system. Use an external database to handle your accounts and what each person's balance is. Don't try to make each address belong to certain accounts (the Bitcoin Core accounts system doesn't really work like that anyways). Or you can use the multi-wallet feature and have each wallet be an "account". However Bitcoin Core may not be able to handle hundreds or thousands of wallets with multi-wallet. It really is not designed for that use case.
