1  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] [ICO] Encrypgen's Gene-Chain Coin on: July 16, 2017, 07:14:11 AM
Folks stay away from this one. After reading the whitepaper, they have made strong assertions which are categorically false. For example, they have suggested that intelligence and personality are directly attributable to genetics with no effect by or consideration of environmental contributions (see the many twin studies on this very topic). Any second year undergrad biology student knows that this is completely false. However, when I brought this up in their slack, I was provided a link with a paper authored by the founders which did not corroborate this assertion.  When I brought this up again in their slack, a fellow named michael messaged me saying that he had ample evidence that intelligence is determined by genetics, removed the messages I had posted and then banned me.  If the authors can't take criticism and cannot provide evidence which clearly corroborates their findings, then it suggests that this is a fly by night operation not worth of investment. Given that there are literally thousands of ICOs available to chose from, there is no reason to pick one in which the authors are clearly uneducated about this topic and who chose to ban skeptics rather than engage them. If the authors cannot get second year undergrad biology straight, what else have they screwed up? Honestly I would have just closed slack and moved on but after being banned, it suggests that censorship of dissenting opinions is occurring and this is something that should be made clear.

Relevant bits from the "whitepaper" "... DNA contains information on a person’s ethnicity and heritage" and "...personal traits such as intelligence and personality". It's absolutely true that genetics play a role in many diseases processes and disorders, but to suggest so boldly that so many characteristics about an individual can be derived from genetic material given our current technology is pushing the boundaries of reality.

Despite all of this ridiculousness. I made it clear that the multichain tech this firm was planning to use was very interesting and did not see any red flags with respect to their tech stack as outlined in the whitepaper or the development team . In addition, one of the cofounders, David was very polite to me in slack and it also seems that Vanessa (cofounder) is an exceptional research scientist. This is why to me it's so bewildering that statements that I've outlined above have made it into the whitepaper...

This individual was told *3 TIMES* to post his ramblings in the #random channel, and was banned for not following the rules.

They don't care if you want to deny that the sun exists, or if the Earth is flat, just don't do it on the #general channel.

Very simple. Follow the rules, and stay.

I was told very clearly that general was for discussion of the platform. Apparently discussion of the whitepaper and the contents of it are not considered related to the platform. Seconds before being banned, michael stated to me "My personal opinion as someone that has been reading science for the last 20 years, is that there's virtually no argument, whatsoever, that Intelligence is genetic. There's a deluge of evidence." and then linked papers which do not support his position. In the first paper linked to me by michael: "We show that the identified genes are predominantly expressed in brain tissue, and pathway analysis indicates the involvement of genes regulating cell development (MAGMA competitive P = 3.5 × 10−6)." It's a pretty big leap to suggest that SNPs or loci that correspond to expression of genes involved regulating cell development implies that intelligence is genetic. Further, the study referenced analyzed over 78,000 individuals all of whom were of European descent, which reduces this study's explanatory power.  Lastly, the authors of the paper have said 'The current genetic results explain up to 5% of the total variance in intelligence." I completely agree, that as usual, more studies are needed, but to suggest right off the bat that intelligence (and ethnicity and personality) are determined in the manner described in the whitepaper is disingenuous.

The next paper he provided me with does not even address the issue we were discussing. It seems like random papers were strewn about in the hopes of dissuading any further investigation. The paper stated "The combined (and all three individual samples) showed a small positive phenotypic correlation between intelligence and lifespan." Okay? How is this even relevant to the discussion of genetics influencing intelligence. This paper discusses the correlation among intelligence and lifespan NOT intelligence and genetics. Source: https://academic.oup.com/ije/article-lookup/doi/10.1093/ije/dyv112

I could keep going on like this for the remaining 3 papers cited to backup these claims, but it's mostly the same thing repeated. The point is, if such unfounded statements are being made in the whitepaper, then it suggests to me that other areas may also be lacking. In addition, the banning individuals who want to support these types of endeavours by ensuring accuracy is just silly and frankly pisses me off. If you are going to run a platform dedicated to storing genetic information, you have to expect that individuals who have training in the field will look on with interest. Have you really not had Vanessa, Barry, Nick or another advisor proofread the paper?

What is the best coin to mine at the moment? I know there is like 6 now, cheers!

Have a look at http://coinotron.com.  It shows the profit/BTC.  At the moment, bitcoin and I0coin are on par in terms of profitability.

Or http://allchains.info/

They are all a mess currently.

Oh cool! I didnt know about allchains.  Thanks Cheesy

9  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: New Ixcoin fork -> I0coin on: August 31, 2011, 06:28:08 AM
At the current difficulty (3115) is it worth while to solo mine?

That depends on your hardware. You will get the same amount of coins over time as with a pool, but the variance will be decreased.

If you are going to get a block once every week on average, you might actually get four in one week and none for three weeks. (And of course difficulty could change in that one month period.)

A hash computation is like going and buying a lottery ticket and letting the computer pick the random numbers. More tickets you buy, greater your odds of winning.

A mining pool is everyone "buying" tickets as fast as they can as a group and splitting the proceeds.

With ~2500Mhash/s?

As for the trolls, I'm ignoring them.

There's a vast difference between trolls and people gathering
incontrovertible evidence of the opinions you offered in various
forums about religion, homosexuality and a slew of other
non-bitcoin related things.

I think it's important that people who use your pool understand
who you actually are, how your mind works (for some rather
stretched definition of the word) and make up their own mind
before they contribute anything further to the eligius effort.

I am personally so disgusted by your belief system that however
much I'd like to not let that get in the way of using your pool if it
was the actual best around (it isn't anymore, by a large margin),
I simply can't.

I hope others will do their own research and come to their own
conclusions.

Live and let live.

Graphs, stats, and reliability have all been top notch since I've been mining here.

15  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: [ANNOUNCE] SolidCoin - new and improved block chain. Secure from pools on: August 23, 2011, 12:29:36 AM
Oh i see.  Excellent explanation. Thanks again Smiley  So it seems with my 2 GH/s i make slightly more mining solidcoins if the price is 0.0017 BTC/SC.  I guess I'll wait 12 hours like you suggested and check it out then.
Err... No.
At the time of your post, SC difficulty was about 2700

(2.7k/32)/(1807k/50) = 0.00233467

that's what btc/sc would have to be to end up +-0.

at 0.0017btc/sc, you're making roughly 30% less mining SC.

Thanks  Smiley.  Ive been mining BTC since my last post.

Was SC actually > 0.00233467 for any significant period of time?

16  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: [ANNOUNCE] SolidCoin - new and improved block chain. Secure from pools on: August 22, 2011, 10:58:23 PM
Looks like solidcoins are less profitable to mine currently than bitcoins. Wait 12 hours and repeat =).

How did you determine that?

take the current difficulty and put it into the generic standard bitcoin generation calculator to find out how long it will take you on average to create a block of 32 solid coins. Then I took the number of solid coins that I would make in a day and multiplied it by the exchange value at scexchange.bitparking.com and found out that 4 GH/s would produce about 1.7 BTC which is less than I would make if I was mining at say deepbit.net.

There ya go!

I appreciate the info Smiley

how does the bitcoin calculator take into account the faster rate of block generation of solidcoin (20 blocks/hr) compared to bitcoin (6.79 blocks/hr)?
Keep in mind Gigahashes are Gigahashes. What makes blocks go faster in solidcoin is the structure of how difficulty adjusts. It is identical to bitcoin in terms of how many blocks are produced by how many gigahashes but they way difficulty recalculates and adjusts over time is another story.

19  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: TradeHill - We now support deposits and withdrawals of funds via Paxum. on: July 28, 2011, 05:50:03 PM
Paxum is a great service, I use them for about 9 month on some occasions (when it's easier for a client to pay through them for example)
They are very responsive and have representatives on other boards, so if it gets traction here i'm sure they will be happy to handle questions on this board as well.

Only downside for me personally, is that they are based in Canada and EFTs/ACHs travel realistically speaking 5-7 business days from US, wires a bit less.  Loading and unloading funds have their own fees depending on a method used.

Payments inside the system are instant and relatively cheap. Different withdraw methods and they have their own debit atm card for those wanting it, merchant API available.

Thumbs up TH!
Good news for Canadians! I look forward to using Tradehill as an alternative to Cavirtex! Smiley
20  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Monitor Temps for multiple GPUs on: July 19, 2011, 04:19:27 AM
Blunt, but I'll take it.

Is TriXX capable of doing this, or is MSI AfterBurner the way to go? Also, is there a way to have AfterBurner clock the memory down to 300 MHz?

Trixx is the way to go if you're over clocking sapphire cards.  Run afterburner to monitor the temps, clocks, fan speeds, etc.  Uncheck synchronize cards in Trixx's settings and set each card upon rebooting.  Trixx can monitor the cards but not quite as nicely as afterburner can.
