41  Other / Off-topic / Re: Machine Learning on: February 24, 2022, 02:13:17 PM
I still don't know the first thing about it. I do want to learn it in the near future though.
I can't lookup  the links to the courses, as the wifi I'm using blocks access to The Pirate Bay. But you  can search "machine learning" in there, or you can go to Udemy.com and get the courses to watch online.
However, if I understand your post, you don't want to actually learn AI or ML, but you're looking for information about them. To the best of my (very limited) knowledge, you will get the best quality information on Wikipedia.
42  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Argument against vaccines quite flawed on: February 24, 2022, 01:59:33 PM

I would get myself checked, once I get the money. That's the thing with vaccine mandates, the poor usually can't opt out of it if it'll be required to take public transport or for job.

Money? Where do you live? Shocked
At least in my country (Argentina) both the checkups and the vaccines are free, and you can get checked and/or vaccinated within a few blocks of your home...
43  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Stealth Variant of Omicron, Covid 19 Third Wave. on: February 24, 2022, 01:50:35 PM

This is nothing new. There are a gazillion viral diseases that caused epidemics in the past, and with the help of mass vaccinations have been or are in the way to be eradicated, but in any case it took decades of consistent vaccination campaigns to get where we're at, and it took everybody's compliance, not a bunch of pricks talking nonsense about it.

Yep. But try explaining this by sharing something like the chart below, and you'll get responses like "well, old-style vaccines worked, but nowadays they're full of microchips and bits of ground-up 5G mast".

https://ourworldindata.org/smallpox

Do we even need to try?
We know for a FACT we can bury them under a mountain of information, and they will still find (or make up) an excuse to state the opposite. Or, worse yet, they will just ignore it.
If you watch the documentary "Merchants of doubt", there's a part from a TV show (from the '70s or '80s, I think) in which one of the pro tobacco guys says "show me a shred of evidence that cigarettes are bad", to which the other guy starts piling up books at him. Then the first guy, without even considering the fact he was being shown the evidence he asked for, pushed away the books, and the presenter dismissed the anti-tobacco guy (who was, btw, a scientist), and closed the show with some idiotic statements like "I smoke a lot and I'm ok", or something like that. If you didn't watch that documentary I recommend it to you. It explains quite a few things.
44  Other / Off-topic / Re: Machine Learning on: February 23, 2022, 05:28:18 PM
As far as I know, machine learning is part of artificial intelligence. The best source I can think of is Wikipedia. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Artificial_intelligence

I have downloaded a number of courses on AI from The Pirate Bay (if you use it, beware of malware!), But I haven't followed them yet. In any case, the page I linked above seems very thorough. Take a look at it, and follow its sources. That should give you plenty to write about.

So far, the Omicron variant is thought to have split into three sub-lineages – BA.1, BA.2 and BA.3 – and these will continue to evolve in the future.

My major concern is on the statement " and this will continue to evolve in the future". is the pandemic such an unending epidemic as it keep transcending from one stage (phase) to the other?. though I understand that no particular curative to virus disease but does that means all hope is dash on having an end to covid/omicron?

Yes, it is, as are all viral diseases. Viruses mutate fast, and with the army of idiots we have today, effectively delaying the response against it, this virus has everything it needs to keep evolving endlessly.
The thing is simple: viruses are particles, they're not living creatures. Just a nucleic acid (in this case RNA) wrapped in a shell. As that, they can not be killed, and, unlike bacteria (which are fairly complex, living organisms), they're simple, so they mutate easily and fast. Until we manage to eradicate the disease, the virus will keep evolving.

You are not required to detect plagiarism, and this is not your fault Smiley. The texts are motivating, but perhaps this is already an experience. A beginner who teaches others looks unnatural.
Check out this thread. There are many examples of how to detect plagiarism.

Great post! A whole lot of people should give that a good read or two.

I'd like to add another key to success is perseverance. Be hardheaded. You know it's gonna be difficult, so don't get discouraged, ever!
50  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Can supplements be bad for you? on: February 22, 2022, 02:28:54 PM
~snip~
That's true, I've also read and seen myself that supplements aren't subjected to patent regulations by the National Drug Organization (the equivalent of FDA in Greece). I tend to stick to reputable brands when purchasing supplements, while also looking out for reviews, and at the same time, avoiding those "natural herbal" or whatever products, since in most cases, they are a complete waste of money.

I'm not against supplements, since I've noticed a difference myself, especially when I was an active cyclist, or when I had a deficiency in something. Certainly, a balanced diet is the key, however, I usually don't have the time or the energy to have one.

Absolutely! Implying supplements are bad just because they're largely unregulated is just as misleading as saying the opposite. Supplements "can" be good, a waste of money, or bad. There's just no guarantees about them.
A few years ago I watched a documentary in the History Channel, in which they said, at some point in time (I don't remember), they used to sell tapeworm (Taenia Saginata) segments as weight loss supplements. Now, you can argue they are, indeed, really effective for producing weight loss, but its side effects should also be considered.

In essence, it's a simple problem: one can argue against regulation all they want, but regulations are (largely) for our protection. It makes no sense (at least to me) to take the risk to go with an unregulated product, when I can get the same (or usually better) stuff by eating properly.
51  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Can supplements be bad for you? on: February 21, 2022, 06:29:41 PM
Ok, initially, anything can be bad for you, even if it's not bad for anyone else.

A bit over 20 years ago, a Spanish philosopher came to Argentina, and was interviewed on a TV show. Among all the unproven, unscientific bullshit he said (which is to be expected from a philosopher), he said something that caught my attention. The guy was making a defense of drugs, and said "drugs don't kill anybody. Ignorance does". It's true.
Of course, with the huge amount of information available today comes a huge amount of misinformation. Here's what I  do:

1. Supplements are not regulated by the FDA, so as a norm I stay away from them. Not only because they can be "bad" for me, but also because they can be (and probably are) scams.

2. I use Wikipedia for EVERYTHING. If it's not in it, I don't use it. Period. I don't ever buy the hype, I research everything. If a product is not on Wikipedia, I research its ingredients.

3. If I can supplement with food, I do. I don't buy fads. I don't follow "gurus". I eat meat (when I can), sugar (as of late, less than 1 Lb. a day, but normally almost 2), fat, etc. If I'm in doubt, I check the Wikipedia page for it.

4. I don't trust ANY site, no matter how reputable it may be, that would provide any data regarding my health. I go to the basics, always.

5. I don't subscribe to any diet, EVER. I try to eat varied food, as much as my wallet will allow.

6. I use my head, always. It's there, anyway.
For example: some time ago, companies started marketing cooking oil as "cholesterol free". From the get go, that sounded ridiculous to me (cooking oil is vegetable oil, and cholesterol is an animal derived alcohol), but quite a lot of people fell for it. From then on, a whole "cholesterol free" market was born. Cholesterol free potato chips, cholesterol free cheetos, cholesterol free pop corn. All things that were naturally cholesterol free to start with.
I spent almost a decade trying to reason with people about it. Then, the Justice department mandated that any "cholesterol free" advertising was forbidden because "while not misleading per se, it implies a misleading concept".
Same happens with "diet" stuff, "fat-free", you name it. People don't want to eat sugar, and will gladly take aspartame, saccharin, and a bunch of other sweeteners (all known carcinogens) in its place. They don't want to use salt (sodium chloride) because it's unhealthy, and instead use sea salt (a known poison) to substitute it.

7. I don't fall for the "natural" bullshit. Hemlock is natural. So is curare, nicotine, opium, etc.

8. For the same reasons, I don't fall for the "if it's hard to pronounce, it's bad" bullshit. Some years ago, the Skeptic Society (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Skeptics_Society) launched a meme that listed a bunch of chemicals, all with very difficult names, saying "Don't eat this!" on top. Below the list, it said: Do you know it? It's a BANANA. Grin

To be honest to use the word "truth" in the same sentence with Donald Turd's name is kinda funny. It gives sarcasm a new meaning... Roll Eyes
54  Other / Off-topic / Does anybody know about freebank? on: February 21, 2022, 03:00:11 PM
Yesterday I received an ad on Facebook (on my cellphone. FB never touches my computer.) about Freebank. Of course, if you're gonna believe what the ad says, there the best since sliced bread, they're perfect, their only focus is to serve their customers, and all of  that. To make it short, I don't believe the ad. So I got scheduled for a talk through Zoom with one of their guys on Friday. Meanwhile, I asked them on FB about one of the points they made in the ad ("Cheap Payments"), and received a cookie cutter reply (probably from a bot) that carefully said nothing in so many words, an ended up making my suspicions even stronger.

Then I thought about asking questions here.
I know nobody had any experience with them, because they haven't launched yet. So, basically, my questions are:

1. Have you guys heard anything about them?
2. Is there anything I should worry about, in terms of the service itself?
3. I haven't installed zoom yet, as the interview is on Friday. Is there anything related to zoom I should be aware of?
4. Is there anything you'd ask them on the interview?

Their link is https://getfreebank.com/, if you want to check it out, but it says very little, besides the usual marketing bullshit everybody wants to hear about. If anything, the page itself is pretty poor...

Thank you all in advance.  Smiley
55  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Argument against vaccines quite flawed on: February 21, 2022, 02:28:19 PM

I'm still noping out of it, considering it's not just me but also many people I know that started feeling unwell after taking these vaxx. And I don't mean just the "usual" stuff like swelling and fever after taking any other vaccines.

Vaccines are pretty much like birth control pills, in that some people have no side effects whatsoever, while on others they make a mess. If you're feeling unwell, the smart thing to do (instead of saying "it must have been because of...") is to consult a physician. It may be because of the vaccine, or it may have other causes, related or not to it. You can speculate all you want, but in the end, only a doctor can give you the right answer.
56  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Be mindful when making transactions on PC on: February 18, 2022, 01:19:11 PM
So everyone talks about the copy paste malware on the pc before you send the btc.

Now before you click on send... is it true you only need to take a look at the first few and last few letters of the btc address you are sending to?  People say malware could change it but when they do change it, as long as you look at even the first few letters of the btc address you are sending to, isn't it going to be noticed immediately since its not like they could get the first few letters of the btc address you are sending to the same?

No, it's not. It's a shortcut, and like all shortcuts has a degree of danger. You should check THE WHOLE ADDRESS once you paste it. If you check the first and last few characters, there's always the possibility that (for whatever reason) one of the other characters may be changed, and you'll lose your money. It just takes a moment, verify the whole string.

Just a question: the site shows a market cap of only $200K, so if I understand it correctly, it should come as no surprise it's not easy to trade. Are there any more reasons, other than the site being new, to say it's a scam?
58  Other / Off-topic / Re: Are there any mathematicians in the forum? on: February 17, 2022, 02:19:05 PM

Your question is slightly ambiguous. I'll try to answer the one I think you are asking.

There are 263, or 17576, possible combinations of 3 letters. Since there is only one way to make BTC, the probability of a random 3-letter acronym being BTC are 1/17576, or 0.0000568958. The probability of a particular camp not having the BTC acronym is 1 - 1/17576, or or 0.9999431042.

Sorry, I realize I should've phrased it better. Embarrassed

Anyways, that was exactly what I meant. My question should've been: "What are the odds of something significant in your life having the exact same 3 letter acronym of your first investment?" Thank you, that clears it out nicely.  Smiley
59  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: How to start in cryptocurrency (and live to talk about it) on: February 17, 2022, 02:08:47 PM
Alright, here's a bit of an update, this time about things NOT to do, as they can send your investment straight to hell.
So, you finally managed to fund your first investment, and you have a bunch of brand spanking new crypto in your wallet of choice to show for it. Congratulations!

Now (and this may sound  kinda rude), you didn't "make it". You just took a first step towards your future. BIG step, but just a step.

This is an account of my latest screw-ups, so it may help others not to do the same.

So I started with $5.04 of BTC on January 27th. Big day. But I was stuck with BTC, and it hasn't been doing so hot as of late. I was itching to change to a coin that would be moving faster. A few days later, I got another 6 bucks and change. Great! Now I could really start.
So I saw at the moment XRP was gaining kinda fast, and went for it. The exact moment I did the transaction and was waiting for the confirmation, XRP price started to drop. I had, at the moment, a bit over $11. Now I have $9.72, and I'm as stuck with XRP as I was before with BTC, with the difference that XRP keeps dropping, and BTC is slowly gaining.

So, what's the moral of this story?

1. Don't be impatient. Think what you are going to do, before you do it.

2. Don't paint yourself into a corner. If you're in an exchange with a minimum of $10 to trade, don't trade when you get $10. Trade when you have extra money, so you can get out of that position (even at a loss) if things don't go as planned.

3. Don't trust exchange fees. Most exchanges will tell you which fee they have, but they will have higher fees (they are careful not to publicize) if you trade with small amounts of money. I traded with $11 on Binance, and the fee was outrageous.

4. Don't deplete your initial investment. If you want to get a second coin, do it, but do it to diversify, therefore minimizing risk. Don't move all your money to a different asset.

5. If and when you decide to get into a position, take your time and do your research. Don't get into a position just because the coin is "doing good". That can change in a heartbeat.

So that's about it, for now. Hope it helps.  Smiley
60  Other / Meta / Re: Respect (or the lack of it) on: February 16, 2022, 06:46:23 PM
Again, I do not buy the idea of not replying to 10pages posts, though I hardly post on threads longer than 5pages. But if it was because of 10pages long thread that the post was deleted, the moderator would have simply scrolled down and lock the thread instead.

Well, in a "normal" forum, if I was the mod, I would've disregarded the report altogether, especially considering it's an off-topic thread, but considering this forum has that policy of members preying on members, it kinda makes sense. It still sucks though...

The title of this thread alludes to some sort of disrespect on the part of the mods and directed toward you, but I'm 99.99% sure that isn't the case.  Nor is it even disrespectful for them to delete posts in general; it just happens, and it happens to the best posters from time to time.

It's not disrespectful towards me personally, but it is disrespectful towards the time a member (any member) puts on replying to a thread. Since the post wasn't spam, nor was it rude toward others or in any way unacceptable, the deletion was uncalled for in the best of cases.

Since your post wasn't exactly so valuable that its absence deprives other members of valuable information, just let it go.  Why are you so concerned about a post on movies in the Off-Topic section of such concern to you anyway?  I did read what you wrote, but in the end it's really no big deal--so just move on.

I'm not really that concerned about the post (other than it was arbitrarily deleted) but about  the fact that they did send me a PM with no way to reply to it, and stated I should "avoid posting things to be deleted" without specifying what the problem was.
But I did move on. This thread gave me information I didn't have. I don't agree with it, but I do understand it.

BernyJB, don't worry because based on the statistics of the number of deleted posts in bpip it looks like you are not a spammer or some spam reporters are ignoring you and so far only your 2 posts have been deleted. So I don't think this is a big deal to you because this has happened to anyone.

Oh, yeah, you got that right, I'm not a spammer. Grin Grin
I don't know. I wish I had the knowledge to make higher quality posts. Then when I relax and post a quick reply about movies, I get deleted. I can show you probably dozens of posts I made (especially in the beginning) that could've been rightfully deleted. I'm happy this was a short one...

I'm a bit surprised that anyone cares what is posted in the off topic section.  I figured it was just there for people who have lost the ability to bring themselves to post anything currently being discussed in the community and want to keep their activity up.  I don't believe signature campaigns pay for posts in this section, so it seems like for a majority of the posters on this forum that section would be worthless.

Well, personally I posted because I was bored, there was nothing I could find to read or help with, and it's a relaxing subject (and I do like those movies a lot). I don't really care much about my post count, as I haven't joined a signature campaign yet (you're right, they don't pay for off-topic posts). Either way, I don't really like to post garbage. Sometimes I may loose it a bit, but I think my time is valuable, so as to not having to read through tons of crap to get to a useful answer, and so is other people's time.
