If I were to mine with a 5970 then would I run 1 worker for both GPUs or is there any way to get them to run independently of each other?
Yes you can run 1 worker for both GPU's, or you can also separate them if you wish also just modify the script to use a different worker.

Excluding hardware costs, what is the USD cost of electricity required to generate 1 BTC?
That's the price around which BTC will stabilize, I think. If the price is higher than that cost, miners will generate new coins and sell to push the price down. Below that cost and the miners will turn off their mining rigs. Since they are not mining at that point, they won't have new BTC to sell. Of course other sellers could continue to aggressively push the price down but at least the miners won't be the ones doing the selling.
Yup, I can see already by the next difficulty prediction difficulty might actually go down potentially, but I agree with your overall assessment that miners will continue to mine as long as they can pay for electricity.

i think its only going to get worst.
when poeple get their bitcoin back from mybitcoin, what do you think there gana do, sell....
Nah... I doubt people will get anything back from mybitcoin (tens of thousands dumped into the market recently does not look promising), but if they do, they'd be stupid to sell off immediately, and they know it. in anycase these low prices are likely to stick with us for a while. everytime the market will go up, poeple will think its a good time to get out... making the price stable at about 10$ for weeks IMO I agree, confidence in bitcoin has taken yet another hit, but not unlike other markets I believe it will return back to $10 - $13 in the coming weeks as well. I see 5970's on ebay once again for "Buy it now" which rarely ever happened since the beginning of bitcoin mining.

Look at the bright side...maybe we won't need to shift the decimal place as soon as we thought. And if it collapses, we can always burn our worthless bitcoin to heat our homes in the winter (oh wait, nm...I guess fiat currency does have some intrinsic value after all). LOL

Dargo, i wanted to start mining as soon as possible so i wasn't worried about mining with my gpu yet
i did however get my gpu up and mining with a great tip from BMFX
approximately how long do you have to wait before you are done receiving shares?
I see you choose slush, you should seem them in the status how many shares you have processed, they start appearing pretty quick say a few minutes at most.

the notes say he will be speaking about - " BitCoin: Network Manipulation for Fun And (Literal) Profit " sounds like he is sharing an attack vector or something like that on bitcoin, or manipulating the market somehow. I guess one should expect that from a hacker conference. Or is this just a 'dangerous' sounding headline on an otherwise bitcoin-positive talk? Ooh sounds interesting, You can watch it free via streaming http://www.blackhat.com/html/bh-us-11/bh-us-11-uplink.htmlUnless your going PS. I don't think its a vulnerability about the network, just using bots to perform automated trading so you make money while not on the PC. Reminds me a few years ago about the guy that made over million dollars installing malware that infected peoples machines with ref feral links so when the victims went to amazon the hacker always got a cut.

Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Building a new PC

Hi guys, I'm hoping to build a new PC very soon and would like to double it up as a bitcoin miner... Is it still worth buying parts especially for mining? How much longer will it be profitable to mine for the average user?
Probably going to get the HD 5850, what do you reckon? Should I spend a bit more money and get a couple of SLI'd cards? Has anyone got a similar setup that works well for them? What are your specs? Thanks!
Yup got 4x5850's running in one box Motherboard: MSI 890FXA-GD70 AM3 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813130274PSU: Antec 1200w (You can run with less but I like to get the best so if I choose to expand I can I think someone said you can run 4x5850 on 750w on another Post) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817371032The rest doesn't matter in my opinion but I got RAM: Kingston 4Gb CPU: Phenom II I run linuxcoin on them and works awesome. No need to SLI (like Dargo said) you loose Mhashes

Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Problem with 5870, crash when I open a miner
|
on: July 28, 2011, 02:40:29 PM

Hi everyone, I have a problem with my rig, with a 5870 graphic card, this card had this problem since i bought it, but I never cared because I never needed to restart the rig often. Now I'm away from home and a crash of the rig can cause me hours to restart it.
This card (Sapphire 5870) make the driver to crash, everytime I open a miner I receive this error "display driver stopped responding and has recovered" and the miner remain stopped (shows 0MH/s)
To make this card to mine I need to start the miner a few times (usually around 6-7) make the driver crash all those times and one time is the lucky one, when the card starts to mine!
After the card starts to mine it will be mining forever without any problems...until next reboot.
I tried differents over/underclocks but nothing. I have latest drivers (with the previous instead of showing this error it showed BSOD) With my other 5870 everything works fine, tried to swap cards, use just one..etc but nothing, always this problem.
Any idea? What can be the problem?
What is your setup (H/W and S/W). I bought a 5970 off ebay few weeks ago, kept doing the same thing every time starting phoenix it would crash in windows and linuxcoin. Got fed up moved the card to a different motherboard and it works perfectly fine. Apparently that one board which already had 2x5850's & 1x5970 just didn't like him joining their crew, I have a 1200w PSU Antec so I know it could handle the power load. Either way if you can test it on another motherboard that would confirm your suspicion, hopefully its not busted RMA'ing cards takes forever...
