141  Local / Politics and society (Naija) / Re: People scared to Invest online because of the failures of Ponzi schemes on: April 21, 2024, 09:32:27 PM
Alot of Nigerians suffered from that MMM but after it crashes many others came even did worst like racksterli and 86FB, there was a popular one last year cstcmine, were alot of Nigerians lost alot of money including their some of their admin who never knew it was a scam, since they thought they were mining the platform cryptocurrency but it was just another ponzi scheme. https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5450175.msg62320338#msg62320338

I know these kind of experience has discourage alot of Nigerians to invest in Bitcoin or even cryptocurrency as a whole or do any online business but some have been to come out of it, since they now know/see the reason why is good to invest in Bitcoin and also avoid ponzi schemes, scam coins and token including knowing how to keep their coins save.

Though many are still living in fear but with time they will know better about these scams and true investment like bitcoin.

A purely peer-to-peer version of electronic cash would allow online payments to be sent directly from one party to another without going through a financial institution.
https://bitcoin.org/bitcoin.pdf

If blocks are only filled by 10%, 20% or 30% with P2P online payments of digital cash, then something has seriously gone wrong. I have no problem with a free and competing fees market. That's how it's supposed to be. If you are willing to pay more than me to make an online P2P payment of electronic cash, then all the power to you my brother. I will have to wait my turn or reach deeper inside my own pockets to offer a competitive fee rate. What I don't believe anyone should have to do is to compete with spammers who are not making P2P online payments with electronic cash, and are taking away many of the features that normal people love. With those, I mean a cheap, fast, and borderless way of sending payments in any amounts you want.
The Ordinals is something that I didn't expect to be on the Bitcoin Network till but now Rune as been added, while others may claim everyone has freedom on how they choose to spend their Bitcoin/Sat and when you try to remind them that this was not what is written on the Bitcoin whitepaper they respond with Bitcoin is now bigger than Satoshi but I wonder how they justify this when others suffer from this fate, bitcoiners are depending on Altcoins for making payments.

Anyway if the dev still decides to let the spam continues, it doesn't matter after all we have been on this issue since last year and nothing have really be done. Though I don't really know much but one thing I can say is that these should be scrap out of the Bitcoin Network.

Bitcoin being only use as a means of payment and been great for years while if anyone think Bitcoin needs to expand then, why don't they, make Bitcoin usable for everything Ethereum and other altcoins are being used for since they fail to see how it is feasible on the Bitcoin Network.

Keep praying for your team caused by they are now under pressuer. This is what i have called that as snowball effect that happened to your favorite team and liverpool. They are starting to bottle jobs any game.
It means they missed opportunity to win the trophy. arsenal or liverpool have ever lead the competition. it's time for city to take the trophy.
People who believe Arsenal will win is the Gunners Tongue that's why he's really support Arsenal.

But for someone who can evaluate and measure every teams objectively will say Manchester City will become the champion. Manchester City didn't qualify to semi final in Champions League because they're unlucky, they shots 33 times. While Arsenal didn't qualify due to their poor performance.
Actually I never saw them as a title contender until they started acting consistent earlier this year and then Liverpool were becoming more disappointing but now it's clear Arsenal are still not ready to win the league while Liverpool should be ashamed of themselves now because we can't even compare them to city again. City and Pep are above every other EPL team with a huge gap.

The remaining matches in the championship race are as below:

The updated points are:

1. Manchester City: 73 points
2. Arsenal: 71 points
3. Liverpool: 71 points

Even though Manchester City are going to have most of their matches left away I think they have the most comfortable fixture. This makes me think that it will be really difficult to prevent them from being the champions.  Sad  Still I hope that this race continues until the last moments. Seeing all 3 teams still in the race would be great and I would place a bet on one of them to make it more thrilling to follow.  Grin
It's already over for Arsenal while it will take a miracle for Liverpool to win the league now since Man city has a less difficult games than the others and also they are really consistent especially during this period of This season and so I guessed we can say that they already won the league

I am guessing he now has some back door into my wallet and if I were to deposit that $5k, it would automatically be sent to his wallet. I am broke and don't have $5k anyway and I am not going to do it. I don't feel like losing more money since I have lost everything and now am filing for bankruptcy as the banks are holding me accountable for the reversed funds and there's no way I can pay it back.
I don't think the scammers as a back door to your wallet rather just like Husires said earlier, he will definitely scammed you of the $5k through this since this type of scam is called honey pot scam. Here he has already lured you with the $100k in the wallets but if you try to transfer such coin the $5k or any other amount you use will go to him, which  automatically occur through a smart contract call when he created such coin

Quote
What do I do? Is there any validity to the $5k to turn a $100k token into a refined coin? How do I find out if he has a backdoor into my wallet and in turn close it? IF YOU READ ALL OF THIS I DO APPRECIATE YOU AND ANY HELP/ADVICE YOU MAY BE ABLE TO PROVIDE.
Don't even try sending it to him, I have never heard anything like refined coin but I guessed he only said that to you because he thinks he can still fool again you after the first scam.
146  Local / Politics and society (Naija) / Re: Price control action by the government through the FCCPC. on: April 20, 2024, 10:36:35 AM
Just as Charles talk make dem start from the top begin to dey show workings and the moment people for bottom see wetin dey sup, dem go readjust.

As dollar don fall small, the price wey manufacturers dey pay to bring in raw materials into the country to produce their finished products don also come down. But if dem still dey sell at the old price to their consumers, then the price of things go remain the same, except dem don bring their price down but some greedy persons still dey make things difficult for others. Anyways, na good work from FCCPC, but make dem also spread their tentacles across other cities aside the ones wey dem mention.
If only these people fit just show up for Edo state, here the business men/women are so much greedy, all you hear from them is dollar rate has increased even to those selling Vegetables while when it drop they hardly spoke about it but you saw that recent increase again like 2 or 3 days back, it was already trending that dollar rate as increase.

I hope they focus also on the electronics, phone and gadgets market since this are were these  acts is mainly common.

What do you think? and how long will this agency be able to stay corruption free? Because it is not impossible for big supermarkets and stores to begin bribing the officials of this agency to allow them with their illegal prices.
I think this is a welcomed development. However, this is Nigeria and corruption is deeply interwoven into the bloodstreem of those civil servants.  It is good the price-cabals will be laughing right now because they know that all they have to do is grease the palms of one or two of the agency staff and they will be informed before hand when the agency will visit their supermarkets. As the FCCPC is doing their own, we the public have to put pressure on the superstores. If you go a shop and notice that their price is "off", simply take a timestamped picture of it, with the supermarket, post it online and tag the relevant agencies.
Definitely bribery is inevitable here but if we take our stands like we did last year with the POS vendors by reporting these supermarket to them things will actually become better, though this idea will not really hold against those in the local market, I believe this agency still has to instill fear to the market men and women in some of the local markets across each states to make them to be weary in acting on greed

150  Local / Nigeria (Naija) / Re: Nigeria GDP. Now fourth in Africa? on: April 19, 2024, 10:25:11 PM
OH I just noticed this now, I guessed Wikipedia usually update theirs  yearly though Base on this link on wiki, the current GDP is now  $252.73 billion while they still say Nigeria is the second largest economy in Africa https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Economy_of_Nigeria
This was where I initially got the information from: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_GDP_(nominal)

Although it is countries of the world but you can easily point out the African countries among rhem before Nigeria.
OH yes, also going through the link shared by you, I noticed that GDP is not really tied to Inflation rate with notably countries Argentina which is the most inflated with about 276% and Egypt with 35.7% while Nigeria with 31.7%  in February base on this info https://nairametrics.com/2024/03/25/top-15-countries-with-the-highest-inflation-rates-in-the-world-as-of-february-2024/ are having a higher ranking in the nominal GDP than
Nigeria.

Quote
Base on the information you provided I can see Nigeria and Egypt rank drop is mainly because of their currency devaluation but do you think this will increase if the value of our currency increases since though we have experience some significant drop but things have not really changed?
Currency devaluation will reduce the GDP as it is estimated in dollars.
OH yes, sigh I wonder why I didn't notice this earlier
151  Local / Politics and society (Naija) / Re: Do you not think those land borders should be opened again on: April 19, 2024, 09:30:05 PM
Exporting is good as it will increase GDP, but Buhari and Tinubu government look for ways Nigeria are going to produce more things locally but our GDP is decreasing. Sometimes, it is easy to explain in theory, but in real life it can be different.
Actually to be frank I think it should be open to allow competitiveness because now our local goods are way too expensive and sometimes sub-par to their foreign counterpart, using rice for example which is the most consumed food in our country, since the shutting down of border, smuggling foreign rice made it more expensive while our local rice  are still expensive and there are higher chances of eating stone or it having a tatse sub-par to the imported rice from Thai, this has made many still continue to go for it even against the price.

Another thing is from the fact Market men/women prefer the foreign since its usually up to the actual measure and sometimes more than while our local is usually below it.

@Amphenomenon

Your link is for 2023 and not 2024.

I am correct about what I posted yesterday.

I have just seen this on Bloomberg which was yesterday news.

Nigeria’s economy, which ranked as Africa’s largest in 2022, is set to slip to fourth place this year and Egypt, which held the top position in 2023, is projected to fall to second behind South Africa after a series of currency devaluations, International Monetary Fund forecasts show.

The IMF’s World Economic Outlook estimates Nigeria’s gross domestic product at $253 billion based on current prices this year, lagging energy-rich Algeria at $267 billion, Egypt at $348 billion and South Africa at $373 billion.

-snip-

If only the common man would have to be patient, then a guarantee of life long success can be attainable.

You treat Bitcoin like "manna from heaven" when simply Bitcoin is a decentralized transaction system developed out of Satoshi's concerns about the current system. It wasn't developed as an investment asset from the start, but somehow over time people considered it an "investment asset" rather than a digital currency. That's not wrong, but what's wrong is how someone deifies Bitcoin and assumes that one can become successful by just investing in it and being patient -
You definitely aware you are wrong if you actually think right. To be frank I will like you to answer these questions :
  • Who actually HODL and accumulate bitcoin and in the end lost their money
  • Those who invested in gold in the 90s or early 2000s did they became rich or broke?
  • Do you agree with the term bitcoin is the new gold?, can you with this accept bitcoin as the world best store of value now?
Quote
and even more hilariously makes it a gateway to "life long success". No need for hyperbole, and just educate people properly, no need to exaggerate.
I wonder how hilarious this is to you when you consider those in WO, also I hope you know that not only through bitcoin investment we can become successful as a bitcoiner while if this might be hilarious to you, then you need to check the Technical board here, since there are alot of bitcoin dev there who make a living in developing bitcoin project like wallet, websites and the likes
155  Other / Off-topic / Re: LabHost phishing service with 40,000 domains disrupted, 37 arrested on: April 19, 2024, 05:02:04 PM
Nice one. Phishing attacks is becoming a nightmare...

The story is interesting and it's good we have it in the Beginners section, imo. Phishing attacks are easy to avoid if you pay attention to simple details.
Yes that's if you don’t click on link sent from unknown sources online, email or even sms, while also being cautious of who you're sending information or funds to online, especially if it's the Actual person or service.
Though there are still some complicated ones like the news we have heard about Playstore and Appstore having malicious apps, this is among the reasons we should continue to stay updated about security news.

Why are users sent warning messages? If they have used the platform to scam people, they should be arrested immediately and not be warned through messages. .
Through legal proceedings? Seriously, you can't arrest someone in the internet just through the stored data in any database with only the email address, it could be hacked, have fake names, as well as fake address and all other info. The messages sent could be just asking evidence or whatever. Since the main suspects are the owners, people operating the website.
You're correct and another reason why investigation will go on before any punishment some of these users may actually just explore the site while some might have just used it fewer times less than the others and so their punishment will varies.
156  Local / Politics and society (Naija) / Re: Human and child trafficking on: April 18, 2024, 09:30:34 PM
To be frank I'm always disappointed when I still see people being victimize by Human trafficking in Nigeria but I don't really blame all since there are still many uncivilized places here, I guessed they still need to be informed about this especially schools around these areas should be given us task by the government.

I don't know if anyone heard about a news around February or March last month were an old man in his sixties rape a child less than 10, I can't really remember more detailed about it since I only heard from the Radio but this kind of news is something we all ha ve heard about and there are always news like this yearly

Also we need to be watchful on who we walk with and give our children or younger ones to watch over them. So many things are going on like rapes, ritual, selling of body parts and kidnapping. God helps us all

157  Local / Nigeria (Naija) / Re: Nigeria GDP. Now fourth in Africa? on: April 18, 2024, 06:27:02 PM
I just went to check Wikipedia and Nigeria sits second with a nominal GDP of $390.002 billion https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_African_countries_by_GDP_(nominal)
But seems like it was just updated 19days ago on Wikipedia base on info closed to the bottom of the link shared by me above.
Nigeria GDP should be around $394 billion. On Statista, the update was on 11th Apr 2024 which was 7 days ago. I think it is accurate. But in short, Egypt is the highest in Africa now but the country has half of the Nigerian population.
Yes and they are also the third most populated with %7.7 while Ethiopia second with %8.7 and the Nigeria the first with 15.3%.  We can see Nigeria topping these two with almost x2.

Though this shows a positive growth to the economy while things is just still too complicated for we to say it's getting better
158  Other / Off-topic / LabHost phishing service with 40,000 domains disrupted, 37 arrested on: April 18, 2024, 03:38:27 PM
The LabHost phishing-as-a-service (PhaaS) platform has been disrupted after a year long global law enforcement that now as put to end this menace and they arrested 37 suspects including a main member of the LabHost team.

The site called LabHost was active since 2021 and was a cyber fraud superstore, allowing users to produce realistic-looking websites from household names such as the big banks, ensnaring victims around the world including 70,000 in the UK.

LabHost amassed 480,000 debit or credit card numbers, 64,000 pin numbers and made £1m from membership fees alone from 2,000 people, which were up to £300 a month for membership, to be paid in cryptocurrency. It advertised itself as a “one-stop-shop for phishing”.

It offered a tutorial video on how to use the site to commit crime, similar to a video on how to use a new consumer product. The video said the software took five minutes to install, and offered “customer service” if there were any problems. It ended by wishing its criminal users to: “Stay safe and good spamming.”
Without having any much IT knowledge with their help anyone can create a phishing website or any other phishing scammed mentioned and many universities student as been using this platform, for malicious purposes in order to make money online.

LabHost also offered infrastructure for hosting phishing pages and automatic phishing email generation and distribution, allowing low-skilled cybercriminals an easy way to carry out attacks.

In February 2024, digital security company Fortra warned that LabHost was growing into a popular PhaaS platform, surpassing other established players on the market.

The recent international law enforcement operation coordinated by Europol started roughly a year ago and involved police forces and special investigators in 19 countries, as well as partners from the private sector like Microsoft, Trend Micro, Chainalysis, Intel 471, and The Shadowserver Foundation.

"The investigation uncovered at least 40 000 phishing domains linked to LabHost, which had some 10 000 users worldwide," reads Europol's announcement.

Europol highlights a particularly powerful tool called LabRat that made the service stand out from the competition. LabRat is a real-time phishing management tool that enabled attackers to capture two-factor authentication (2FA) tokens and bypass account protections.
Also about 800 users has been sent messages to warn them about upcoming investigations on them by the law.

It's good to hear news this and to know there are law enforcement agency fighting against such illicit platforms mainly found on dark web  but we also have to watch our guards since it's crystal clear that the internet is not safe as it seems.

To be frank I don't believe Haaland has lost his form since his return from injury because He has not really been performing well even before his latest injury especially big teams. Though your reason is something I can agree with that these teams usually are able to locked him but I think there are two things left which is either Pep change his formation to make a support for him in order for him not to be the only player in the forefront like you said or it's up to Haaland to improve his skills and overcome this hurdle, which I think will be better for a player of his profile.

Yesterday I lost a bet, but it was to my friend  Cheesy

I had a lot of confidence that Manchester City would manage to qualify, with difficulty of course, but I was wrong
Real have shown once again that they are the greatest team in the Champions League and that tradition plays a big part in deciding matches, it's hard to explain and perhaps it doesn't even have a logical explanation, but in deciding matches the team achieves unbelievable results
This was something I was expecting though I never thought the winner will be determined by a penalty shoot out though when the penalty shoot out started I had almost full feelings that Real Madrid will win since they were used to such situation, having experienced than any other team to me though I might be wrong.

Quote
The next Real Madrid vs Bayer Munich match is going to be very interesting
Will Real be able to nullify Harry Kane like they did Haaland?
Harry Kane is totally a different player than Haaland and I don't think that there is any actual 9 is better than him now. While this game in general is a game I can't predict though Real Madrid as mainly been the better team against Bayern Munich in the champions league but I think Bayern still have a chance to win even if they are having one of their worst season in over a decade now. This is their only chance of getting a trophy this season.

I think we might be getting another Psg vs Bayern Munich final which will be more intense than seeing Real Madrid VS psg in the final.

Recently, to my surprise, I saw Nigeria as the fourth in Africa with well reducrion in GDP on Wikipedia which is not more than $253 billion. Is this correct?
I just went to check Wikipedia and Nigeria sits second with a nominal GDP of $390.002 billion https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_African_countries_by_GDP_(nominal)
But seems like it was just updated 19days ago on Wikipedia base on info closed to the bottom of the link shared by me above.

I went to check the Statista and I saw Nigeria GDP to have declined but not down to $253 billion but $394.94 billion. On Statista, it gives estimation up to 2028 and 2024 has not yet finished which makes me think it could just be a guess work or speculation rather than the real estimated value.
I don't think this is a guess work but maybe a speculation base on their analysis though if we watch their speculation closely till the year ending we might be able to get better understanding how they made this or simply check their past analysis
