I've seen an ad on TV where you can 'bump' iphones together to share pictures... is there any way you could do that for spending bitcoins?

I'm guessing it's some kind of bluetooth thing?

Anyway, it would be great if you could spend bitcoins from one phone to another via bluetooth, instead of QR display and scan.
442  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Transporting $12 billion in gold internationally estimated to cost $400 million on: August 25, 2011, 08:06:30 AM
But by the time a $12b transaction is possible, 0.0005 btc will be worth MUCH more... so hopefully fees go way down too.

Also, $400m on $12b is only 3.3% ...way cheaper than some outfits.

Modifying bitcoind to share the blockchain copy is at least an order of magnitude less work than modifying it to use or share multiple wallets.

Probably, but it's still hard to imagine running 500 instances without the server soiling it's pants.

If adults engage in this type of behavior I could only imagine how children act towards each other.

Perhaps many of the replies are literally from children.

I wouldn't be too concerned about what the press think, after all the silk road press was good for bitcoin. But telling family you're going to Pattaya might be awkward.

You could automate this using WeBetCoins.com  Smiley

Wouldn't that require players to pay money, rather than post a free guess in a forum for no risk?

I come from a very poor family. My mum is bankrupt and my dad struggles from week to week. I barely make the mortgage payments each month.

Just because I sympathize more with the rich, doesn't mean I'm rich (yet).

I just have bigger ambitions that most, and $4m doesn't cut it, sorry.

I'd rather take a chance at $40m knowing I took a chance, and didn't cut and run when it got a bit scary, even if that means I never even make 4.

...Wow dude.  I think you've blown my mind.  Do you like being this stupid?

I love it.

Sucks wishing for things you don't have, doesn't it?  I suggest you reconsider how far your thinking has actually gotten you financially...

Sympathizing more with the rich?  Do you truly hate your parents or something?

It doesn't suck at all, it's called goal setting. And it's gotten me very far since I actually have a house to live in now, instead of a cardboard box. Next step, bigger house.

Was biddingpond the first true auction site or was there an earlier one?
450  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: South African Rand / Bitcoin Exchange Rate on: August 24, 2011, 03:08:56 PM
Exactly, that's why South Africans need more BTC/ZAR volume to get a better deal... which is what OP is trying to achieve.

(Although I must say, I found nothing on that site to warrant posting a thread about it yet, it's practically empty)

Jeeez 50 times... I had that in my sig for a while and even I never played it that much.

Got a few '1% referral' payments though even though they work out to be quite small mostly.
453  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: South African Rand / Bitcoin Exchange Rate on: August 24, 2011, 02:24:06 PM
- The price of Bitcoin in any currency must equal that of Bitcoin/USD/currency2.

Not true because otherwise there'd be no such word as 'arbitrage'.

There always exists disparities between prices in different currencies.

For example a quick check of the bids on Tradehill show:

USD: 10.9030
AUD: 9.4110

So therefore 1 AUD = 1.1585 USD? Nope, not according to www.xe.com

Edit: I look forward to the day I can trade BTC/ZAR with good volume.

457  Economy / Gambling / Guess the blockchain growth, win btc on: August 24, 2011, 07:51:44 AM
Just thought of a little game that might be fun...

Right now blk0001.dat+blkindex.dat = 750,631,971 bytes.

Let's try to guess when that it will reach:

a) 800,000,000+ bytes (win 0.10 btc)
b) 1 gigabyte (win 0.25 btc)
c) 1 gibibyte (win 0.25 btc)

Post your guesses for each in this thread by the end of August (I don't anticipate it reaching that file size by then).

My guesses which could be waaaay off because I'm just pulling them out of my [[]] are:

a) September 5, 1pm utc
b) October 31, 1pm utc
c) November 3, 1pm utc
458  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Using multiple wallets with a single daemon on: August 24, 2011, 06:24:42 AM
Actually, it would end up at more around the 500 copies mark, not to mention 500 clients all taking up bandwidth keeping up with the blockchain. Having a single daemon able to do it would cut that wait out of customer connection and transaction time, and I'm aiming for real-time store counter transactions.

Quote
datadir=
I may look into the source of the daemon itself. It may be possible to have it reinitialise itself with a new wallet without shutting down. Keyword 'may,' not sure if I'll have the patience or enough knowledge of C++ to read blindly until I find the right subs to edit.

Well, cool, if you get it working I'll pay 1 btc for a copy of it.

By the way, I'm not so sure bandwidth would be an issue... maybe I'm wrong but I thought only the default 8332/8333 copy would use up bandwidth and the rest would be 'internal' bandwidth as the secondary copies would simply 'download' the blockchain from the bitcoin1/ folder on localhost - Well, you could force it to do this by having the secondary copies only connect to the main one via the -connect switch.

Someone more knowledgeable please tell me if this is all false.

1e-8 BTC = 10 nanocoins.

460  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: TradeHill appears to be using floats on: August 24, 2011, 04:49:02 AM
The minimum abount you're able to bid in the webUI is 1 USD.

Minimum sizes alone wouldn't help the precision issue, so it's good to know they also use high-precision decimals.

example: What if you wanted to trade 5.00000001 btc at a rate of $10.00000001? Minimums don't come into play at all in that case but you still need the precision.
