861  Other / Politics & Society / Re: FH Admin arrested when he just developed Onion-Bank - an attempt to limit BTC on: August 20, 2013, 09:04:45 PM
I think it's unfortunate that freedom host was brought down, I was using Tormail myself and OnionBank could really have taken off due to the reputation of freedom host. Now that he is in jail I guess the source code won't be released. And even if, who else could take on the project? The only one with similar reputation would be the owner of Silk Road I guess.. and I'm not sure we want someone who is running illegal business to also run a wallet service.

They even have specially developed trojans for dropping CP on computers in order to have a target incarcerated and discredited. Could there possibly an easier, more efficient, risk fee way of removing opposition?
Source? I've been waiting for something like this to really take off. Minimum sentence of 10 years per image is no joke. It would be hilarious if someone in the US started planting CP on the PCs of politicians and government officials, they would rot in prison literally for the rest of their lifes - all thanks to their own laws. Cheesy

This user supplied constant is the same as the mouse entropy used at bitaddress right?

Sort of.  A keyboard mash is much easier to audit that it's properly being added to the entropy pool.  If I can verify that the generator is producing private keys that are a hash of my chosen string plus some other data, I think it's fair game to assume that if my string is decently unpredictable and secret, that my private keys aren't going to be predictable to an outside guessing attack.  The problem with mouse data is it's hard to know if it was any good.  What if the user has a touchscreen and doesn't generate mouse movement events unless you actually press something etc...?  Bitaddress.org moves on with whatever additional entropy it presumably got from the mouse, which could be zero, and which someone might later find it may dangerously be not enough.

I think keyboard mashes have low entropy per character (e.g. I bet "asdf" is quite overrepresented in them) but if they're forced to be very long (like a line or two of text) I see them as a very decent way to "cut" the output of a "securerandom" that might be later found to be broken ("cut" as in cut a deck of cards)
Yeah that makes sense. I make sure to move the mouse around as much as possible before generating addresses. But I guess bitaddress could improve here, they could do like TrueCrypt, letting the user move the mouse around for as long as user wants, I usually move the mouse a few minutes when creating a TrueCrypt container. And they could introduce a minimum amount of movement... If they did that, it would be as good as keyboard input I assume.
863  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: [ANNOUNCE] Android key rotation on: August 20, 2013, 02:18:11 AM
"apetersson" says that "nobody knows" if bitaddress.org is safe... but even in the worst case scenario that there is a problem with the random algorithm wouldn't the entropy by mouse movement requirement be enough to ensure keys are still random?

I don't see how it can not be safe... thoughts?

I would feel much better if bitcoin wallets generated new addresses using the following method:

SHA256(something_from_SecureRandom + some_user_supplied_constant + some_incrementing_counter + current_system_time/tickcount)

The "some_user_supplied_constant" could be nothing more than a string collected from the user upon first invocation of the program, and perhaps even saved to a config file.  It serves the same purpose as salt.  Because the user supplies it, it's pretty easy to verify that it isn't predictable.  It will have relatively poor entropy, but would successfully serve the purpose of making mass cracking of insecure random numbers pretty much impossible, as well as verifiably ensuring that there is some portion of the input that is truly unpredictable by an outside attacker.
This user supplied constant is the same as the mouse entropy used at bitaddress right?
864  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Most Bitcoin friendly country for founding a company on: August 17, 2013, 04:26:55 PM
After seeing how well the US treats online businesses I am thinking that establishing my business in the US is not the best way forward.

Are there decent web hosting companies based in Hong Kong that take Bitcoin? And what are the hurdles of starting a business there? Are there residency requirements?

Or why use any country, what if I just had a server in a different country every month? A nomadic server with no permanent home. The only permanent thing would be the domain name.
You'll need to physically move to the place where you want to establish your business, it doesn't matter where the server is (the only exception is if you own a US server, accept US customers or similar, then you can be extradited to the US for breaking US law (in reality, it doesn't really matter what you do, the US can still request you handed over, but at least you're safer with no connections to the US and can argue that in extradition court)).

I'd recommend the agorist principle, if you can. That is, don't start a company and don't disclose your location, host your sites from any country (except the US).

Hej!

Supert!

869  Local / Skandinavisk / I need a computer, buy it for me at komplett and I will pay you bitcoins. on: August 12, 2013, 04:44:10 PM
I'd like to order a computer from komplett.se and pay using bitcoins. Since that's not possible atm, would anyone be interested in purchasing a computer for me and then get paid in bitcoin?

Looking for trusted members. I might also want to purchase other stuff in the future.
870  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Here come the MLM scams on: August 11, 2013, 12:17:22 AM
MLM = Multi Level Marketing.

It doesn't equal scam, but a lot of those using the word "MLM" are using it to camouflage a pyramid scheme.

I'd say this is promising news, if all MLM, pyramid and ponzi schemes starts using bitcoin the demand will be massive!

On the other hand, it kills me inside to think about how easy some of these coming scammers will get off. But, maybe people who chase these scams and gets burned deserve it, they should know better.... at least they'll be taught a lesson.
871  Bitcoin / Press / Re: 2013-08-03 - independent.ie - Founder of the Freedom Hosting / Tormail arrested on: August 03, 2013, 11:34:21 PM
I'm inclined to believe that his hidden services was compromised, which could be possible, as explained in an in-depth analysis of the Tor network only a few months back [source].

I don't think he was caught due to using a liberty reserve account, there would be too many users to single out, he never actually launched any service with liberty reserve, and even if he did his liberty reserve account would be pretty much anonymous as well. Seems like a dead end.

A compromised hidden service on the other hand could be fatal, depending on where the servers are located and how he accesses and pay for them.
872  Bitcoin / Press / Re: 2013-08-03 - independent.ie - Founder of the Freedom Hosting / Tormail arrested on: August 03, 2013, 11:14:38 PM
It's bitcoin related too, it was only last month that he launched "Onion Bank":

Quote
16th July 2013 The launch of a new service: Onion Bank.
It has been two years since the open registration of new
Freedom Hosting accounts was closed, and replaced with an invite only
system, which was done to prevent DDoS attacks.

I initially said there would be an option to purchase an
account for a low price of $5 with bitcoins but nothing ever came of
this, mainly because there was no easy way of accepting bitcoins on an
onion site without having to install the bitcoin software.

This gave me the idea that I should create one, a site
where merchants can signup and easily accept bitcoins on their onion
sites.

I created Onion Bank, which has been in (slow) development for almost two years!

Originally it was supposed to include an anonymous exchange between Liberty Reserve and Bitcoins, but since the closing of LR it has now become a bitcoin only site.

One of the problems with using bitcoin on the Tor network is anonymity, bitcoins have a blockchail which can link your purchase or sale of bitcoins at exchanges with the sites that accept them, to use them anonymously a shared wallet/laundry system is required. Onion Bank does all of this and more, the ability to accept and spend bitcoins anonymously.

Using Onion Bank you can accept bitcoins on your site, complete automation is possible.

You can also setup a simple payment/donation link for your site.

Features include...
 Merchant Services SCI/IPN.
 Multiple Identities under one account.
Generates a new bitcoin address for every transaction.
 Escrow.
 Laundering.

Visit Onion Bank at http://onionbank6fdaccy.onion/
You can also test it out with testnet bitcoins at http://obtestnetmeczlkn.onion/

Now the interesting question is, how did he get caught?

A few quotes from Blitz made in july

Goodbye, triple digits. See you 2015.

After this week, I'm not sure we will see triple digits in 2013 again.

This has never been a billion dollar market to begin with. Triple digit, billion, those are things of a faint past.

No more triple digits for 2013.

Noone buys the triple digit lie anymore.

Looks like MtGox is beginning to shake off its denial and join the ranks of the 80s. This is only the beginning.

What if the buyer is an established casino firm that wanted to get into the Bitcoin game? If that's the case, then they would've been accumulating beforehand and have been responsible for some of the buying pressure. This would now be gone, along with 350k coins released on the market.

I smell blood.

Keep tryin' buddy, even a broken clock is right twice a day Wink
874  Other / Off-topic / Re: Do girls use Bitcoin ? on: July 24, 2013, 08:27:10 PM
Not that it's a very good indicator, but my bitcoin related videos on youtube used to have 1-3% female viewers. Realistically I'd say about ~5% of users are female at this time, in the beginning it was probably close to 0%, but now that bitcoins is becomming more mainstream we will see more women.
875  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: BREAKING: SEC Charges pirateat40 With Running Bitcoin-Denominated Ponzi Scheme on: July 23, 2013, 06:01:53 PM
Unbelievable how stupid this guy is. Ripping off that much bitcoin and ending up with so little $, moving it all into the exchange at once, putting his name out there and thinking he can get away with it.

This is great news, a big slam it the face of everyone saying that agreements made over internet with "stupid internet money" can't be prosecuted. I'll be using this case for all it's worth.

Wonder if those BTCs will be "cashed out" into local currency... doubt it, right?

I dont think Eric is going to cash it out.

Cheers
Eric already cashed out. Out of USD.

Viewed as legitimate businesses in the rest of the world, they are treated as criminal enterprises in the U.S., and Tzvetkoff could face life in prison for serving them.
One more reason why the US should be cut of from the internet. Really. The US should have it's own internet. Maybe people would finally wake up then.
