The Halvening is approaching ... fat fiat pigs will be harvested.
2762  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2016-04-07] TheAtlantic: Can Bitcoin be used for good? on: April 08, 2016, 12:39:11 AM
... tide is turning once again.

These people are totally vacuous and just go with whatever way the wind is blowing. Why they call it Lamestream media i spose.
2763  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2016-04-07] Bitcoin Browser Brave Draws Fire from Major News Publishers on: April 08, 2016, 12:17:10 AM
I wasn't totally compelled by the Brave browser previously. Not any more.

Advertising networks using legal bullying because of a competitive threat deserve none of their revenues. Say goodbye to the meager earnings you extracted from me never clicking on your banners, gentlemen.

This.

Advertising in the browser has gotten progressively more obnoxious as bigger and bigger money flowed into it ... no more. These idiot lawyers do NOT get to tell me which software I must run on my machine or which content I choose to display. Go fuck yourselves guys, couldn't happen to better bunch of assholes, Brave all the way for me from now on.
2764  Economy / Speculation / Re: Halving guide for noobs: Why it's not possible for halving to be priced in now on: April 07, 2016, 10:37:40 PM
If the price is guaranteed to rise significantly after the halving, why aren't you buying as many coins as you can now so you can make a guaranteed profit when the price rises? Why wouldn't the smart money buy up all the cheap coins now, up to the post-halving price, and therefore pricing in the halving jump in advance?

Nobody knows how much bitcoins will cost to produce in January next year.
2765  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: ToominCoin aka "Bitcoin_Classic" #R3KT on: April 07, 2016, 10:33:46 PM
gmax is going to have to do thing like AMA's and such, to really sell the idea.
He doesn't have to do anything.
its going to be interesting to see how the network reacts to segwit being released...

i wonder how much effort it will take to get that 95% they want

I imagine they'll try hard and succeed for some weeks but eventually they'll give in.  Why would those that want any increase at all block segwit once it's out there?  Much of the support for Classic will just accept segwit size increase and continue lobbying for another one.

I don't think many of the people running classic nodes will know how to upgrade to segwitcore and it doesn't seem like classic will merge it at this stage.

Saw this link on /r/bitcoin, interesting stuff.

http://meaningness.com/metablog/geeks-mops-sociopaths

Completely irrelevent for Bitcoin though, since the entire purpose of a currency is to become a monopoly, a consensus mechanism for exchange.  The less of a monopoly it has, the less useful it is.  Your link argues popularity weakens the idea, so the article is inverse to how Bitcoin actually works.  Don't try and conflate grunge music and economics.  People like money to be as boring and predictable as possible, not "cool".  Just like when you open your refrigerator, you don't want to have to guess what's edible or not.  That's definitely not cool.

I agree, but it definitely has some relevance to the 'hipster' vibe surrounding 'blockchain technology' in finance (in as much as they can be hipster) and the same in fintech, VC funded start-ups surrounding bitcoin.
2767  Economy / Speculation / Re: Halving guide for noobs: Why it's not possible for halving to be priced in now on: April 07, 2016, 10:24:59 PM
Brilliant post r0ach, it has certainly flushed out the trolls and haters (at least we can find them all in one place now.)

What he is describing is the demand floor that mining represents for a current and on-going demand of 3600 bitcoins per day at cost price.

As market price decreases below cost price that 3600 bitcoin per day number increases, and exponentially not linearly.

100 days after halving (~3.5 months) there will be a shortfall of 180,000 coins, at the current cost.

200 days after halving (~7 months) there will be a shortfall of 360,000 coins ... i.e. the total 'float' presently in all the exchanges.
2768  Economy / Speculation / Re: Halving guide for noobs: Why it's not possible for halving to be priced in now on: April 07, 2016, 10:28:07 AM
The halving maybe partially priced in psychologically but practically it wont affect the market until 3-6 months after halving.

r0ach is correct when he says
Quote
this means the floor miners will stop selling at raised too.

The cost of production floor set by well-capitalised miners' unwillingness to sell at a loss (or even go to buy at the market) is the great secret of bitcoin that prevents it from collapsing totally during downswings.

Halving the block reward effectively doubles the cost of production overnight, thus raising the floor. Without an equivalent decrease in difficulty, it then takes some months to work through the system that bitcoins will 'never' be that cheap to acquire again.

...everybody always wants to buy cheaper .... until they can't.

Still got all those guys waiting for $150 btc ... and bunch of guys before them waiting for $40 btc.

2771  Economy / Economics / Re: Bitcoin is Becoming a Global Currency on: April 05, 2016, 11:59:38 PM
I do not think it will ever be a global currency although its possible for sure without even a doubt, the fact is now that you can already see signs that it has a chance its growing very fast these days.
Plus its also getting more popular day by day due to the things that are happening.
Bitcoin will be more powerful currency in future, but expecting that everyone will be using it in future seems to be impossible or impractical as it will take a long time for people to know about bitcoin.
A lot of people know about Bitcoin, the thing is not all of them want to use it for one reason or another. Most of the people I've seen interested in Bitcoin are people who are relatively younger, and are more open to new things. I haven't seen anyone over the age of 40 who doesn't think it is a failed investment or it has no future or whatever other argument they have against it.

Satoshi is over the age of 40.

shit's gonna get real.

Speaking of walls ... looks like some tension building up on the buy side and sellers backing away.

Some big buyers not getting filled off-exchange and coming back to market again?

Could you point me to the global consensus ledger that Safari, Mozilla and Chrome maintain together? No? Then you're making a terribly foolish analogy.

you mean this? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hypertext_Transfer_Protocol

No. Where is the "consensus ledger?"

This is actually quite relevant to the Lightning Network. In the "bitcoin=internet" analogy, the core broadcast network (the blockchain) is equivalent to the Internet layer (IPv4)--the layer that routes most internet traffic. HTTP is part of the Application layer, which is a layer built on top of IPv4 due to IPv4's limited capacities for proper data delivery, sequencing and integrity.

i think the point was that the internet was scaled by adding layers and soft forking
the TCP/IP layer has stay the same, but with the HTTP layer thrown onto and later another layer ( JS / CSS / Flash etc. )
we have managed to get scale the internet without HardForking the underlying protocol TCP/IP
its an analogy that isn't perfect but isn't have bad...

... coming around to the 'right' way of thinking I see?

You need to throw in possibilities for UDP/IP and streaming-like analogies also, they move a LOT of traffic. Tiered-routing, NAT, IPSec, VPNs and others all add to the zoo of layered data solutions all based on IP but expanding its utility, capacity, effectiveness, etc.

^^
Yeah, not the point.
... Being able to drop your bank ...
You didn't do that. Still buying & selling your FunBux for actual money.
Like BTCeanie speculators buy & sell their BTCeanies for actual money Sad

beanie baby speculators all left and went into ETH ... just hardcore holders left in BTC now using it as a real hard money ... stuffing it where it hurts the banksters the most
2777  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Faucet is running dry on: March 31, 2016, 11:33:42 AM
What a blast from the past to recycle this old thread. Some things never change, Gavin wanted to identify users with their Google accounts to stop people from exploiting his code and sucking the faucet dry, and lately he wanted to infringe on people's anonymity with his partnership with Mike Hearn too. ^hmmmm^ I always thought he donated most of the money to his faucet and now realize there was Ad income and donations from other people. Glad you revived this post, very informative. ^smile^

... yeah it is pretty funny, Theymos wanted to introduce people to the "fees feature" in 2011 Smiley
2778  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: ETH price soaring. Are you going to move some BTC into ETH? on: March 31, 2016, 11:22:16 AM
Gives me that sinking feeling watching these suckers rallies and chatter of $50 eth ... you guys need to get out now as close to the previous top as you can or you are in for a long time of disappointment and losses.

Top is in the rearview mirror.
2779  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: ToominCoin aka "Bitcoin_Classic" #R3KT on: March 31, 2016, 11:19:19 AM

No, I'm not a troll, but the atmosphere in this thread has a tendency to wake up the inner trolls of all of us :/

That said I hope we manage to get a civilized, adult discussion.

... yeah right, a civilised discussion with disingenuous little weasels arguing in bad faith and an endless barrage of troll-fest questions that looks more like feeding time at the zoo. Good luck with trying to make your turd slinging session look like 'civilised discussion'.

And how many of these sudden experts and critics on segwit have commented on github, or god forbid, submitted actual code pull requests for improvements to the system they're crapping on?? ... big fat zero I can confidently guess.
2780  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: ToominCoin aka "Bitcoin_Classic" #R3KT on: March 31, 2016, 07:55:55 AM
It was inevitable that these forkers would eventually target segwit, which was widely acclaimed as a completely uncontroversial fix when it was first released.

The governance coup that they are attempting is founded on disrupting any and all progress that doesn't belong to 'their vision' of progress. If it wasn't segwit it would be whatever Core was currently working on.
