101  Other / Meta / Re: Is this mail from noreply@bitcointalk.org legit? on: May 26, 2015, 01:58:04 AM
It should be legit since everyone received that email. Check the signature with theymos's key, it should be valid.
102  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Help me restore my wallet.dat on: May 26, 2015, 01:33:00 AM
hmm I was worried this was the case but even then I freed up space on my C:
How would I specify a different data directory anyway?

I have 47.9 gb free, this should be enough right? the chain is only around 20gb if I am correct??

thanks
That should be enough, the blockchain is around 34 GB now.
103  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Help me restore my wallet.dat on: May 26, 2015, 01:27:03 AM
hey thanks for the replies guys,

I am getting an error in bitcoincore saying I don't have enough disk space even though I have over 600gb free. what's with this?
If you installed Bitcoin Core on a different hard drive but didn't specify a different data directory, then Bitcoin Core will default to its data directory at %appdata%/Bitcoin on windows or ~/.bitcoin on linux.
104  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Please help me import my wallet.dat and recover it on: May 26, 2015, 01:20:19 AM
It would be helpful to know what your wallet was from. Different clients backup to different file formats. If it is for Bitcoin Core, you can put the wallet file in the data directory and the balance will show up once everything syncs. You can also use software like pywallet to extract the private keys so that you can import them into another client.
105  Other / Meta / Re: How to delete my account on this forum? on: May 26, 2015, 12:53:42 AM
You can't. Just change the password to something random and forget about it.

Before you post, please use the search function and see if anyone has asked and answered your question already.
106  Other / Meta / Re: Need more information on hack on: May 25, 2015, 10:29:01 PM
Mt.gox your account like have post more than 3 years on bitcointalk.. Do you remember your password today ?
He did not as his password was reset via secret question (source: https://bitcointalk.org/seclog.php). It is most likely hacked since the answers to the secret questions were not hashed as securely as the passwords and were thus more easily brute-forced and guessed than the password.
107  Other / Off-topic / Re: PM me your bitcoin address so you can recover your account if it's hacked on: May 25, 2015, 10:16:41 PM
That thread you linked to requires a high level of computer literacy to participate. I don't want to learn how to sign messages, all I want is something fast and simple I can do to help me recover my account if its hacked.
You actually don't need to sign a message, just post it there and it will be your proof that you own both the account and address when the address is quoted. Either way, if your account is hacked, you will need to learn how to sign a message in order to prove that they account is yours.
108  Other / Meta / Re: Need more information on hack on: May 25, 2015, 10:03:11 PM
No. The database was copied, there are many copies now many people have it.
And where can I get a copy of the database?
109  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Thanks Google....For subconsciously linking Bitcoin to ISIS (Google "what is bit on: May 25, 2015, 09:59:20 PM
This is actually not google's doing, but the person who posted the video. You see, when you click the "cc" button for captions, it will default the caption to the first in the list of available captions which the uploader had to provide. The list is sorted alphabetically, so, arabic is first.

I don't know what your smoking, but this does not prove that google subconsciously links bitcoin to ISIS. Just because ISIS uses a publicly available font for their flag does not mean that everything written in that font is related to ISIS. And personally, I don't see how the fonts are the same, they just look similar because it's arabic.
110  Other / Meta / Re: Disable Account in the Forum on: May 25, 2015, 09:25:23 PM
Hi, I want to delete my account in the forum. The option to do that is not available in my profile. How would I accomplish this task? Thank you for the help.
Delete all the info in your profile. Then change your password to a bunch of random characters and forget about it.
111  Other / Meta / Re: theymos is a government agent | do not use this forum it is honeypot on: May 25, 2015, 07:31:15 PM
Not sure I understand.
You're saying that discussion of bitcoin is impossible without subfora dedicated to promoting gambling, ponzis & warez?
Are these things somehow intrinsic to bitcoin?
No, I'm not saying that. But, with the subforums dedicated to gambling, ponzis, and warez, the newbies and people who don't know what they are doing are less likely to be drawn into scams since it is made abundantly clear that things in these forums could be scams and that you could lose your money. If these weren't there, then threads promoting scams would be everywhere and it would be difficult to know what a scam is, what could be a scam, or what is legit.

Another useless thread, this forum is more better and awesome (every day) and the soc. engir. attack was really impressive.

How is it useless?all you need to know is in OP, theymos works for state legislatures.
It got a little off-topic.
112  Other / Meta / Re: Post your PGP here on: May 25, 2015, 07:23:08 PM
Post your PGP address here to see if you're the legit owner of your account.

Remember that when dealing with anyone, make sure to check the date of the signature. Older signs probably are fakes.

I'll go first

BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE

G9oKPLDLClrybscT6SXaxBETN7BmE/kIVDFf865WPuEKSul5nlWT0DL1eBr0cP2IAlceav5smR5gi8YT0ZgHLDs=

BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE

This is Somekindabitcoin's address

END PGP SIGNATURE

Sorry if I totally did it wrong. Didn't add those other things that should be underneath, but it's right.
We need your PGP Key.

This is already happening in this other thread: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=996318.0
113  Other / Meta / Re: Please delete my account, kthx, bye on: May 25, 2015, 07:21:15 PM
Sorry, not possible. You can't delete a bitcointalk account.

You can however, delete all the information from your profile, change your password to a bunch of random characters, and forget about the account.
114  Other / Meta / Re: theymos is a government agent | do not use this forum it is honeypot on: May 25, 2015, 07:11:31 PM
Name these "big companies" with websites constantly going offline (for days on end) because their service providers were "social engineered" to hand over root password to their servers.
Bitcointalk is not constantly going offline. The last time Bitcointalk went down was over a year ago.

Many companies do not have their websites going offline for days at a time because a) they have their own servers and b) they have teams of people fixing the problem instead of only one guy.

As why do they "promote" ponzies wich they not, it was already mentioned plenty of times that is better to have them all in 1 place, i dont agree with it but its what it is.
Having a section dedicated to promotion of ponzis is promoting ponzis, no lie.
And how is it that a forum started to discuss and promote Bitcoin suddenly has not just gambling & warez selling sections, but a section dedicated to ponzis? Which friend of Bitcoin thought this is a good idea?
Wake up, bro!
The section dedicated to ponzis and investment games is there to protect people. If these scams were not moved into the section where the top of each thread has a massive warning about gambling and potential loss, then many people would be scammed and Bitcoin would be further brought down by the number of scams. Having these in their own subsection hidden inside the gambling section prevents people from being scammed and keeps all of the ponzis in one place.

118  Other / Meta / Re: Forum upgrade????? WHEN? Just another hack. on: May 25, 2015, 04:17:08 PM
Last time I checked this forum had millions in BTC\USD in donations, but still hackers are hacking away at such old software and hacking in almost as easily as signing in with a password. Since I've been here, this is the 4th time this has happened.
This attack as nothing to do with old software, but rather the people at the company running the data center because this is a social engineering attack, not a technical one.

Can I ask, when the forum operators notice a hack is going on why don't you just turn the server or VPS off for a while? Nothing deters a planned attack then nothing to attack. But instead you leave the place up and running to all our passwords once again can get compromised.
Theymos, the administrator, did in fact turn off the server, the forum was shutdown when he noticed the attack to prevent the attacker from gaining too much information. Then the forum had 3 days of downtime as theymos got another hosting provider, reinstalled everything, and restored all the data.

You should check out Theymos's thread about the compromise here: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1067985.msg11445725#msg11445725
119  Other / Off-topic / Re: PM me your bitcoin address so you can recover your account if it's hacked on: May 25, 2015, 04:08:12 PM
This is the entire point of the Stake your Bitcoin Address thread here: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=996318.0 except instead of PMing the bitcoin address to a newbie, your address and a signed message is posted publicly, quoted for records, and verified by multiple trusted members of the community.
120  Other / Off-topic / Re: PM me your bitcoin address so you can recover your account if it's hacked on: May 25, 2015, 04:00:14 PM
PM me your bitcoin address so you can recover your account if it's hacked.

The quote below explains how to recover your account if it's hacked, but you need to have posted a bitcoin address you control in either a pm, or a post here. Also you can use a bitcoin address if its associated with your profile.

It's against the forum rules to spam threads with addresses, so pm me a bitcoin address you control, and make a note of the pm ID because you will also need that to prove your ownership of our account.

...........

Q: My account was hacked! What do I do?
A: See this thread: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=497545.0. When PMing the signed message, send it in [code ][/code ] brackets (just without the space at the end). For example,

Code:
-----BEGIN BITCOIN SIGNED MESSAGE-----
My account <account> has been hacked/lost. Please reset the email to <email>. The current date is <date>.
-----BEGIN SIGNATURE-----
<insert address here>
<insert signature here>
-----END BITCOIN SIGNED MESSAGE-----

Here is the unedited post where I posted that address: ...
OR
I sent that address to someone in a PM with PM ID#...

If you don't know how to sign a message, google for some tutorials with terms like: "signing messages with <insert your bitcoin client name here>". For example, "signing messages with bitcoin-qt".

...........
And why should we PM you, a newbie, when the thread that quote links to says to PM theymos?
Quote from: theymos
If you use any sort of Google email service, then the password recovery email will go to your spam folder.

If you want me to recover a hacked/lost account, you need to prove that you own it. Typically, the only acceptable method of proving ownership is by signing a message (including current date and desired new email address) using a Bitcoin address or PGP key associated with the account. A Bitcoin address or PGP key is associated with the account only if the account posted the key/address, sent it in a PM, or if it is still listed in the account's profile.

I very rarely recover accounts if you can't prove ownership as described above. There are alternative ways of proving ownership, but they take too much time. If I point you to this thread, you can't prove ownership properly, and then I ignore your future PMs, this means that I'm not going to recover your account. Create a new one.

When sending me a PM, use a template like this:

Quote
-----BEGIN BITCOIN SIGNED MESSAGE-----
My account <account> has been hacked/lost. Please reset the email to <email>. The current date is <date>.
-----BEGIN SIGNATURE-----
<insert address here>
<insert signature here>
-----END BITCOIN SIGNED MESSAGE-----

Here is the unedited post where I posted that address: ...
OR
I sent that address to someone in a PM with PM ID#...

All required info must be in one PM.

Do not create your temporary account using the same email address you want for the hacked/lost account. No two accounts can have the same email address.
