1  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Someone hacking mybitcoin.com accounts: Proof on: June 22, 2011, 02:35:08 AM
24.184.196.101 is a Tor exit node according to https://check.torproject.org/cgi-bin/TorBulkExitList.py?ip=194.63.142.59&port=80, so it's almost impossible to figure out who it actually was. Good luck though for what it's worth.
Ummm... You entered the wrong IP. I did a port scan and it is dead. Definitely not Tor.

No, it isn't the wrong IP, unless you gave us the wrong IP. The IP address you posted is in the list. As to why your port scan comes up empty-handed, it could be filtering incoming connections, or just be too bogged down to handle your connection attempt.

Right -- that is a list of some Tor exit nodes among which the offending IP is listed. That IP in the URL (194.63.142.59) was just part of the search result link from Google but that wasn't the important part.

3  Economy / Marketplace / Re: MtGox supports Dwolla on: June 17, 2011, 01:20:25 AM

Have you bothered to login or communicate with them?  Yes, they messed up big.  They did however, make things right.  They do have a support tab if you login, use it <hint -- the solution>.  I would like to see more trading move to TradeHill [and even a third or forth exchange].  Balanced between them with something a bit unique about each of them perhaps.  TradeHill is a wonderful site and great people.  MtGox is honest and honorable, so if they owe you, it can easily be verified whether they paid you [Dwolla has the records and MtGox has the transaction key in your account history].  Now that the problem is fixed, complaining here isn't going to help you get your money that you say they owe you; that is up to you.

Yep, of course I have been emailing them. The purpose of me posting here is so that my process in retrieving my money is transparent.

Has anyone still not received all of their withdrawls?

I still have not received my one and only withdrawal attempt from MtGox, initiated on May 27, as I mentioned earlier in this thread. I wonder if I'll ever see it.
5  Economy / Marketplace / Re: MtGox supports Dwolla on: June 10, 2011, 06:18:32 AM
I am confident ... ABSOLUTELY ... that it did not arrive in your account.  Right?  Angry

Well, I did say I would update, and my update is that you are correct. But seeing as everyone else seems to be having a problem, that doesn't surprise me at this point. I'm glad I didn't get too far into exchanging yet, but the money in limbo here is still enough for me to care.

Quote from: MtGox Email
Dwolla made some changes to their system and we were not told in advance, hence the delays on your withdraw. We have marked your withdraw to be retried and it should go out sometime today.

Just my update for now. Will update if anything happens.
7  Economy / Marketplace / Re: MtGox supports Dwolla on: June 07, 2011, 04:44:10 PM
I still haven't gotten an update on mine. Last email was from June 3 asking for my reference number as I mentioned before. It seems like people who emailed after me have gotten their withdrawals. What could possibly be the holdup? I almost feel like I should email again. I'm really getting tired of waiting for a withdrawal from almost 2 weeks ago, but I understand that this Dwolla feature is new to their site.
8  Economy / Marketplace / Re: MtGox supports Dwolla on: June 06, 2011, 07:09:19 PM
Last night MtGox re-queued my transaction and this time it went through.

Thanks for the update and I'm glad they took care of your issue. I've had no such luck yet with mine, but I hope the fact that yours was resolved means mine will be soon. Did they write you an email telling you they requeued or anything? I still haven't heard from them since they asked for the transaction id.
9  Economy / Marketplace / Re: MtGox supports Dwolla on: June 04, 2011, 09:32:20 PM
Got an email from mgtox asking for the reference number and stating they would look into this.
I sent them the reference number from my account history.

I am at the same point currently. I received a similar email on the same day as your post.
10  Economy / Marketplace / Re: MtGox supports Dwolla on: June 03, 2011, 04:10:24 AM

I also made a withdrawal on Friday 5/27 that went missing, despite having successful withdrawals before and after that one.  Perhaps a whole batch of withdrawals failed to be processed that day.  I emailed Mt. Gox a few hours ago.

The $10.18 just came in.  Took 4 hours.  Something must have happened on Friday.  Still no word from MtGox on the matter.

Thanks for the information. Please post here if you hear from MtGox by email, or maybe they would respond here. Hopefully we hear something soon about this. I'll send an email as well.

I've read here 4 days or so, but I initiated a withdrawal from mtgox on the order of $50 to my Dwolla on 5/27 (which is 6 days ago right now). Is this common to wait this many days? I'm just wondering how much longer I can expect to wait.
12  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Negative interest loans is foolishness. on: May 30, 2011, 07:10:43 AM
Well I thought the OP was stating something obvious until I saw people disagreeing.

Consider a scenario where someone from not even a year ago took on a BTC loan to buy a new computer valued at $800 USD. Each bitcoin was about 0.4 cents each then, so they would need to borrow 200000 BTC. At a conservative 2% interest rate to offset risk, that's 204000 BTC.

Fast-forward to today and the loan is due. Each BTC is ~$8.50 right now, so the borrower needs to get $1,734,000 of value in order to pay for an $800 computer from last year.

Do you think someone who didn't even have $800 of purchasing power a year ago would have $1.7 million now?  Granted, I don't think bitcoin will increase in value so exponentially in the long run as it has in the last year, but the point will still stand regardless if you are placing a naturally deflationary currency against an inflationary one. Maybe lending might make more sense if there is equilibrium, but as long at the BTC economy grows and each bitcoin needs to account for more value, then that isn't going to happen.

EDIT: (This was similarly demonstrated in post 8, but didn't seem to be argued against sufficiently. Then again, I hadn't read all the replies in this topic yet. I was just posting in my few minute break here.)
13  Economy / Marketplace / Re: Selling my name - 2000 BTC on: May 28, 2011, 10:13:37 PM
If anyone is serious about taking up his offer: Pool up with other people in a collection to get 2000 BTC pledged towards this by trusted users. (Or have a trusted third party hold the money in a seperate wallet untill 2000 is reached.)

You don't really need trusted users except genjix himself. He can give out one of his addresses that anyone can put money into until it receives a total of 2000 BTC. At that point, the name change can happen.
14  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: When and how did you find out about Bitcoin? on: May 27, 2011, 02:58:11 AM
One of my friends must have seen the slashdot article in February. I dismissed it for a week because he didn't describe it thoroughly (I'm pretty sure I was under the impression that it was centralized and that mining was a way of cheating the system, based on his initial description). Eventually, he posted a blog post that was much more descriptive and piqued my interest. I spent an entire day reading about it and decided to get into it. Started mining a bit. Got lucky and bought 40 of them at nearly their lowest price since I was introduced to it (about 70 cents each). Holding most of it because of ridiculous deflation but trying to use it where convenient.

tl;dr: irl friend in February.

Bitcoin Stock Exchange

OK, that's it everyone, thank you for your effort, I finally came up with it myself.

The name for the exchange will be:
GLobal
Bitcoin
Stock
Exchange

The "global" part makes it unique.. Tongue
16  Economy / Marketplace / Re: 20 Bitcoin for a good name on: April 06, 2011, 06:26:54 PM
I know I originally said you shouldn't use a pun, but what about TerraBit?

Terra - earth (showing global reach)
Tera - SI prefix, as in terabyte, a large amount of digital information.

Adding "Stock Exchange" to the end is an option, so the actual application is clear.
17  Economy / Marketplace / Re: Starcraft II guest passes on: April 06, 2011, 08:16:30 AM
If there is any demand for SC2 guest passes, I have a couple as well. I feel like 3.5 BTC is a fair price for them, but other people in this thread are offering them for far cheaper.
But if those get sold and anyone wants to buy a couple from me, for 3.5 BTC each, I have two left. (6 BTC for both).
18  Economy / Marketplace / Re: 20 Bitcoin for a good name on: April 06, 2011, 08:12:20 AM
I think you should go with a name that's not so much a pun, and obvious parallels with existing services:

Bitcoin Stock Exchange (BCSE or BSE)

Or something easy to remember:

Bitsto.com (for 'bit stock' and currently avaliable)
19  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: still unconfirmed on: April 05, 2011, 04:59:04 AM
Hello,

So I created a separate wallet a couple days ago as my "secure" wallet and I sent some small sums of bitcoins to it to test it out (in 2-10 amounts).  In my regular wallet, I see 100 or so confirmations of my sent transactions, but I still have 0 confirmations in my secure wallet.  Is there any reason why I'm not seeing any confirmations?

I did the exact same thing today and had the same 'problem'. I didn't know about that rescan option, so I don't know if it will work. I just deleted the block data and the client redownloaded it. When you import a wallet and already have blocks, the wallet you imported 'missed' the transactions, so it will not display them. If you redownload the block chain while the imported wallet is loaded, the wallet will see the transactions that belong to it as the client redownloads the blocks that affect this wallet. This had been my observation at least.

Let me know how rescan works if you use it.

Also, try putting the involved addresses into http://blockexplorer.com/. If the transactions show up, they are confirmed (I believe).
20  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Official Client Needs Easy-to-use Wallet Management on: April 05, 2011, 04:51:38 AM
Well, the bitcoin project always need more manpower.

I'd love to help out sometime. Didn't notice the call for developers on the other dev board. I've not used Git before, but I have used other version control systems (SVN, CVS, MKS). I tried building the dependencies for bitcoin and ran into a few issues, but I'll definitely give it a look when I have more time.

I'm working on a (unencrypted) export/import wallet feature. There is prelimininary working version reported here: http://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=4448.0

Cool -- this sounds like the sort of thing that would help this project quite a bit.

Thanks all for your responses. I just feel like it's important that we remove as many barriers to entry into the Bitcoin economy as we can. I need way more things to buy and a much larger audience to sell to. Smiley
