Bullshit

His parents give him permission to use the computer and he just does that: use the computer. The computer use electricity? Omg, is it a breaking news?

You let someone barrow your brand new 'shiny' lawnmower that uses 1 gallon of gas per hour.

That someone mows 3 lawns for $15 each in 5 hours and runs the tank dry.

I bet you're pissed, because you lended it to him filled with 5 gallons.

you've lost $20, while he gained $45.

Although, in this case, he's made $15!  Try getting $20 out of him now!

Alright, purchased a 5970 Smiley.

I know you have.

If you run both, you're paying to run the 560 with the money you're making off the 5970.

Think some more.

You may profit a dollar with the 560 and 5970, but if you only ran the 5970, you'd have three dollars.

one dollar < three dollars.

(example of course)

now for mafs.

560 produces 110mhash/s using 200J/s --> 110mhash/200J = 0.55 MH/J (actual load is 0.38MH/J, but we'll ignore that)

run for 24 hours...

0.2kw * 24h = 4.8kwh

I pay $0.13/kwh --> 4.8*.13 = $0.624

Current difficulty--> 1733207.51385

calculator from http://www.alloscomp.com/bitcoin/calculator.php gives us 0.06BTC/day which is .... $0.32

You may pay more or less, if so, redo the calculations.

No, I am sharing my bitcoins with my parents (just split the purchase of a bitforce single with my mom, they are perfectly aware about mining.) I guess technically this means that I am in essence paying for the electricity, but the addition of a 5970 that is all mine to my system doesn't cost me extra and my parents support my venture.

I'd agree that it was stealing if they were unaware of it or I was using massive quantities of electricity for a mining farm, sure, but one 5970 plus a bitforce single, both that they know about, not, in my mind, is stealing.

If you continue mining with the 560 you will be losing money. Period.  You'll make more money from it sitting on a shelf.  @ 200 watts, you can run a 7970 and get ~600 MH/s  6x the output as the 560, yet half of that income is paying the electric bill.

example.  It costs 3$ to run either a 560 or 7970.

560 will yield 1$ return.

7970 would yield 6$ return.

Net profit?

-2$ with 560
+3$ 7970

Go buy yourself a can of monster instead of running that card Smiley

It's only a benchtable.
You have no advantage to normal Tower with good airflow.
You must install the VGA same way like ATX Tower.

I thought it would be useful, as people build "bench" style rigs.

It would save some the trouble of building a holder for the rig.

Only 7 expansion slots though :/
246  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: 5970 new thermal pads on: May 10, 2012, 05:15:29 PM
I also have coolant thermal pads, those 0.5mm pads should be used, white pads do not provide enough good performance.

Ok, I will try that tonight.
247  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: 5970 new thermal pads on: May 09, 2012, 08:48:19 PM

elmers glue? you serious?

248  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / 5970 new thermal pads on: May 09, 2012, 01:45:26 AM
Well, because my mining farm is down for the summer, I figured it would be a good time to replace thermal pads and slap a new layer of Elmers glue on the GPU's

I tested the card with guiminer and my VRM temp skyrocketed.  They used to settle at 95C, but I turned the test off after 105C. (too risky)

I used .5mm pads for the ram and cfx bridge.

I used 1mm pads for the vrms.  This is with the stock cooler going back on.  (the pads were in terrible condition anyway and the paste was dried)

So the only thing striking my mind is the pads I used.  I researched around here and saw the .5mm and 1mm for those respective parts, so I went through with it.

I used the two pads koolance sent to me for my 7970 waterblock.  the .5mm is grey and sticky on both sides.  The 1mm (on the vrams) is sticky on one side.

any thoughts on this?

I actually thread the molex connector out the watercooling tubing holes then I just cable-tie them together and let them hang out the back. If I wanted to make them look even neater I'd prolly buy a sleeving kit.

I'm a jerk when I go to LAN parties and run all 4 of my Ultra Kaze on the radiator at 3000 RPM then put on my noise-cancelling headphones Smiley

Good idea, but I have my fans connected to my pwm ports :p 2k rpm fans are alittle loud to sleep with.

Why don't you wrap the tubes and cover the blocks with cellophane?

It comes from the river, it goes to the river. I believe is better than to run the air conditioner non-stop.

brilliant idea, really   Roll Eyes

How do you deal with the condensation?  Faucet water is much colder than ambient temps
252  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Crazy efficiency for 7970 on: April 28, 2012, 03:51:30 AM
I like your radiator setup. I have a similar quad radiator setup on top of my Antec P280 Smiley

Personally, I wish it would fit in the case :p

But it will do.  Waiting for the "what the hell is that monster" stare I'll get when I move out of my dorm :p

Also, how do you recommend I thread my fan cables inside of my case?  This case was build for an internal skinny 240 rad, lol.

Good now we're on the same page.  Now you understand why its wrong to say " negative and positive pressure" on either side of the waterblock.

The poster i originally responded to already clarified his loop has non full reservoir. As for "complex equation" you can bet i dont need it.

Ah ok.  I thought the debate was about negative pressure in the whole system o.o

It was, i assumed the system without reservoir. However, mr degree flasher came in with a silly talk.

If you want to create a negative sealed system, you have to heat up the liquid (say 50c) prior sealing. The inline pump inside the loop cant pressurize the loop itself.

or use an overflow valve after stress testing your cards Cheesy

When a high pressure and low pressure area being connected, the system will equalize itself by the fluid flow from one to another.

Negative or positive pressure doesnt mean low or high pressure.

"The term "negative pressure" is used in physics and engineering to refer to a situation in which an enclosed area has lower pressure than the area around it. Any compromise in the divide between the area of negative pressure and the more highly pressurized area around it would cause substances to flow into the area of negative pressure."

Please, humor me.

Is your waterblock an enclosed area?

It is not, however, you cannot simplify a liquid cooling system into a closed loop.  The reservoir contains a less dense fluid, "air" which compresses with less energy than the water.  This allows for a vibration model to be made due to the pauses in rotation by the induction pump. (4 per 2 radians?)  This creates a dampened oscillation, reinforced by the motor.  In turn there is a negative pressure in the reservoir with respect to the pump.

This can be solved by a long and complex differential equation, which I really don't feel like doing.

For more information on this, look up Bernoulli's principle

Please enlighten me on this simple theory.  Why does the resistance not cause more pressure on one side when the fluid is being pumped through a restriction?  Surely you can explain such a simple theory to someone with a degree in math from an engineering school.

I agree with this post. Simple fluid dynamics.  Fluid flows from high pressure to low pressure.  Or it wouldn't flow at all Smiley

Ah makes sense. Forgot you were reading off on-card power measurement devices. Thanks.

No problem Smiley
