I hope cm2 use ethernet to comunicate instead of this "problematic" usb.

things i did to reduce almost to zero  usb probs.

1. new usb cables and usb hubs.

2. very important!!!.  control your temperatures. lots of my usb disconnections were temp issues. adding some extra fans and reducing the bitstream frecuency can solve your problems if you live in a hot place.

3. important!.  disconnect as much other usb devices as you can.  one usb IR receiver for a remote was causing me even BSOD and usb disconnections. Now
my rig was running for days without probs.

4. use "chain mode"  if you can . I can't say it had helped me but  I guess that less usb cables cannot be a bad thing.

Regards.

PS: yohan, will be temp control released in next controller version?

in my limited knowledge the two jtag ports in cm1 are the  14pines ones: one next to the usb cable ( for the fpga array) and the second next to the phoenix connector (for the controller).

According to the efficiency rating in my cgminer (84% currently), it doesn't look like BitMinter supports rollntime. Have you considered adding support for it?

+1

It's a easy 1to1 wire. The dimension of the IDE or Floppy connectors(holes) are to big.

I done them my self with these connectors and cables:
- connector 0.08€ -> post connectors
- cable 10 pol 3 meters 1.95€ -> ribbon cable

Nice ribbon cable and much more cleaner  Wink  your detergent is way better than ep's

And nice shop added to my bookmarks.

Thank you.

PS: ebereon Do you have an usb jtag cable??? dont you?  did you buy it on ebay?

are they "plug and play" or you have to check pines or whatever to be able of use the x3sprog.exe or spiprog.exe ??

Thank you.

I have the prog3 from enterpoint. You need to install ISE and with that the drivers will install too for it. No drivers from enterpoint.

It's simple plug&play.

How i do a recover:
- connect the JTAG cable to the JTAG port of the conrtoller
- start IMPACT (from ISE)
- flash the bitstream to the controller
- repower the board
- done

SPIprog.exe is only working with the ftdi usb, but this is not working when you have the 1.4 controller.
With xc3sprog you have to give the correct option for the cable you use. Prog3 cable is the option -c xpc instead of -c cm1 with the usb cable.

eb

Thank you .   you answered lots of questions i did in the next post Wink you are faster than light !!!

Then it seems prog3 cable is the easy solution i was looking for ,if ribbon cables fails.

you chill me out alot i was scared about  had to discover for my self methods like "the seven" one.

Thank's God I only updated one of my boards, to see how it worked and seeing i couldnt change bitstream using "the seven" windows-fast method, and getting more errors in that board i decided to stop upgrading controllers.

But now It seems I'll have to buy one of those JTAG cables ( what i tryed to not to do).

Yohan now i hope enterpoint begin to support officialy those cables and give us info about those.

Of course I'm following this thread closely and know recently one user give us a paralel port cable but what I need, if i have to spend 30€, is to be sure what i'll have to buy.

and please before to release an official update please be sure at least you can  downgrade it .

Regards.

Apologies for the inconvenience and we will try and not make the same mistake again. We do know now what the issue is simple 2 '1's instead of 'z' in a logic function that drives i/os back to the FT4232.

There are a range of cables available to program with. Parallel port types are very cheap but obviously have a problem that not many people have a parallel port. We do one at £15 (+vat if applies) called Prog2 but there are many other others. For a USB solution we offer out Prog3 at £50. Cheaper solutions at one of our competitors http://www.digilentinc.com/Products/Catalog.cfm?NavPath=2,395&Cat=5 and Chinese clones as well. You can generally find the Chinese clones in Ebay.

There is also a possibility of reprogramming a Cairnsmore1 Controller from another Cairnsmore1 (suitable updated) and by connecting headers up to up and down to down using standard up/down ribbons. We will have a look at that. If it is viable it might take us a couple of days to sort that out. An extension of this technique might allow us to a cheap recovery module for the Controller and we are looking at that as well but that will take a few weeks to design and make.

 Apologies accepted mate.

What i want is an easy and effortless and cheap ,  as it could be, method to fix that .if you are selling one of those cables it sounds good to me. but I have some noob questions:

1.Is it fully compatible with the spiprog.exe and xc3sprog.exe programs?? or you have to use other xilinx programs?
2.If it is 1.  Are they w7 64bits compatible?.
3. has it some kind of basic instruction about installing driver in w7? for instance if they need some extra steps like create conf files or change registry entries...

I'll wait some days to see if that up/down ribbon method works.

Thank you in advance.

We are also experimenting with removing the power feed from USB to the controller to see if it is just better to power the Controller always from the 12V feed. There is a possibility that might cause an ennumeration issue so it's not confirmed we will do this yet but if does look the better configuration we will cut that in to production on boards serial number 0700+.

PS. Apropos usb power: I'm using now a powered (but I don't power it) no-name 10 ports usb hub which works very well because it does not take power from its usb cable (I don't know if it has no power wire inside) and/or it does not deliver the power it takes to its own usb ports.
I believe it has to be like this because I cannot attach more than three boards to my host PC if I don't power them (PC freezes) while right now I have all of them connected and hashing happily since at least a couple of weeks.
So, I'd say, cutting the power line should make things easier for new users.

I'm having this usb issues from the beggining and after buying new powered usb hubs D-LINK ,they are unusable if i power them., just like spiccioli.

testconpastas,

what happens if you DON'T plug into your usb hub its power cord?

they work fine but sometimes randomly (maybe one time after 2days or maybe after some hours) usb devices disconnected. and i have to turn off PSU to recover them

Try this with just ONE board plugged into your usb hub and then with two and so on.
in my  7 port usb hub without power cable i have 6 cm1 working almost ok (except some random disconnections)

If your hub works like mine you'll be able to attach all the boards to your hub without problems, otherwise after two or three boards your host PC should start having problems (slows down to a crawl/freezes altogether).

Im working with a powered usb hub ( but with power cable disconnected) from the begining because if I "power" it my usb drivers fails to install and do strange things. my usb hub unpowered works almost fine except some random disconnections.

maybe my motherboard GA P55A ud5  with 1500ma usb instead of 500 is the cause I could use unpowered usb hub ok

Beware, if your usb hub takes power from its usb cable and then gives this power to its usb ports, you could end up damaging the usb port in your host pc and/or your boards.

I know that but thanks . but i dont know where in this thread i've read that cm1 usb isnt used to feed boards and has low energy consuption. what scares me more is some kind of uncontrolled feedback current to my board but what  I hope is my usb hub has some kind of filter/ diode to avoid that .

I'm not resposible for any damage arising from this test!!!

spiccioli.

Anyone is using that "disabled" (cut wire 5v ??) cable and fixed their/my problem??

With Rev 1.4 you have the option to pair up boards to use a single USB interface. On the Master board all 4 com ports are used to support 4 pairs of FPGA 2 pairs on the Master and 2 pairs on the Slave.  So long and short of it is that you get to use half the USB cables that you needed previously.

Nice and even better you won't  have to guess which 2 ports are randomly used by windows and so you won't have to change cgminer -S option

thank you.

my boards are 62- (~140 ...150)  I've read about the usb cable fix but i dont have  clear how to make it.

will there in future controllers, a fix for that? or must i think about "cutting" ( i dont know what part ) usb cable??

thank you.

PS:: after adding extra fans now my rig works  a lot of better, ( i had a temp problem) but still having some usb disconnections.

1. Do I need to do this w/ one board plugged in at a time?
2. If I don't, do all boards need to be idle?

I'm getting this error w/ 8 boards mining, 1 board idle.

To open cgminer with ports of an already running board.
for instance my ports 20 ,21 are hashing OK and i open a new cmd window and type cgminer  blah blah  -S   20 and 21 again.

I thought that's what you meant. Why would you ever want to do this?

no no i dont wanna do that. it was only a way of "replicate" an error similar to what i get sometimes ( of course doing normal things Wink. and to see if anyone could see any clue in why i'm getting an administrative rights error.

maybe when my fpga is frozen doesnt free any resource and cgminer thinks it is still  busy and show me that error.  it seems weird to me that no body has my error it was all.

Regards.

Try a diff usb cable, I would get this error with bad usb cables.

my biggest bet is on the usb hub  because the suspicious cable works when i unpluged all the others usb cables from the usb and make a power cycle. but your suggestion will be consider . Thank you.

boards which i had thought it was buggy  after a power cycle and plug out plug in usb cycle ( and plugin first "buggy" boards)  it started to work again .
I ordered new hub switches and new fans but they dont be received till wed/thu , so i will have to wait to test new things.

I'm using w7 64bits and the admin privileges issue ahows up randomly no matter if I'was or not in admin mode , and when it appears allways the board is in "my frozen mode"  COM's OK ,orange led...

you get the same error if you try to run a second instance of cgminer over a running board but in "my" case  it show up slowly as it was checking something on the board.

Edit: not the same in "my case" before the admin privileges line it shows up the lines

I think your error is mine . I run one board in one cgminer . Could you check if after   error lines you posted ,do  show up other for a little time telling you something about user privilegesHuh

Try to unplug  usb from all your  boards( better in ubs hub) , then  power off PSU,  wait a couple of minutes (cold?¿? your board) and then power on PSU and first plug usb  of your problematic board.  windows should detect it.

Im almost sure in my case is a temp or usb hub  issue. because sometimes when board is frozen ( amber leds)   it start to work again but other  different fails suddenly.

NOTE: frozen for me is when you have your COMS ok and cgminer is not showing OFF state. but lots of LONGPOLL's and amber leds in the fpgas you have programmed.

Please tell me if it works for you.

Next week I'm going to buy some extra fans and i'll post if they fix my problems.

138  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Quad XC6SLX150 Board - Initial Price £400/$640/520€ on: August 03, 2012, 02:55:49 PM

I'm having bad luck.

after a power cycle I`ve got this error in one of the boards (all the 4 COM's)
Do not have user privileges required to open \\.\COMXX

I un installed coms ports and turn off the boards?  but it still persists could it be a usb issue?

Edit:After reseting my pc now have two boards with this error ?¿?¿  both boards have been worked fine before.

This might not be the problem but we have seen cases where the USB gets screwed up in Windows and once it does the com port is never seen again. However if this is the problem all is not lost. Basically there is a FTDI utilility to do a driver removal and cleanup after which a clean install of the driver usually sorts the issue. If anyone things this is their problem send an email to our bitcoin support email "bitcoin.support" AT "enterpoint.co.uk" and the relevant person will see it early next week when they are back in. Once I have the full details of how to do this myself I will try and get the recovery process listed on one of our webpages so it is easy to find.

On a different point if we do happen to have a DCM issue with power noise then we already have a tested fix. That's what we used to test a Glasswalker2 variant last week at 200MHz operation on an early board and it's very stable. It's not the same as the Controller build as publically available but because we built in a very flexible clocking system into Cairnsmore1 we don't actually have to use DCMs within array FPGAs. Simply we can direct supply a 200MHz clock, or anything similar 0-300MHz , straight to the FPGA to run the logic on. If this looks the way to go we will expand testing of this technique over a larger board sample.

Over the last 2 days we have been running Makomk's 190 build on rig of 20+ boards and we have very good results on our testing.

Well after losts of pc reboots  . board power cycles and uninstalled Com ports in w7. i didn't fix anything with that weird card.
This morning when i went to work I left my card powered but no hashing. Now I'm back at home and without reboot i unpluged usb cable and board responded again ?¿?¿? ( last night i did that hundreds of times...)
I suspect my usb hub is crap because after rebooting sometimes the board/s that doesnt work is different ( so is not a cable problem) because each board has always the same cable .

or as you have said some kind of issue usb-driver /motherboard/w7. ( i thought about temp too but yesterday i had A/A all time.)

I'm going to send you an email to the given address, so next time it happens try to see if that "uninstall driver tool" helps in any way.

PS: d-link 7 port usb hub have  nice price in amazon .uk now . anyone  has got it and is working well with their cm1?

Thank you yoham for your support.

I know this seems simple but did you open the command prompt with administrator rights?
of course i tryed , but the other boards and these never needed admin rights before. so i think is a "false friend" error.
