1  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin halving on: April 23, 2016, 08:45:34 PM
The Bitcoin havling can be a good thing and a bad thing. For the people that want to buy bitcoins this is a good thing because the price will get halved so the coins get cheaper. If you want to sell this is less good news.

Huh the price won't halve... the supply of BTC will halve. I doubt the price will go down, in fact, i believe the price will increase. Regardless, even if the price does decrease, it is not because the price will halve.
2  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Today, Mark Karpeles learns how to spell "EMBEZZLEMENT" on: September 12, 2015, 12:11:47 PM
Anybody have any idea about what kind of punishment he could face if found guilty on those charges?

If you really want to know then here's what looks like their penal code - http://www.cas.go.jp/jp/seisaku/hourei/data/PC.pdf

The following is from the document you posted, not sure they will all apply though, just posting here for interest....

Quote
Article 252. (Embezzlement)
(1) A person who embezzles property in his/her possession which belongs to another, shall be punished by imprisonment with work for not more than 5 years.
(2) The same shall apply to a person who embezzles his/her own property when the person has been ordered by a public office to hold the property in custody

Quote
Article 235. (Theft)

A person who steals the property of another commits the crime of theft and shall be punished by imprisonment with work for not more than 10 years or a fine of not more than 500,000 yen.

Quote
Article 246-2. (Computer Fraud)
In addition to the provisions of Article 246, a person who obtains or causes another to obtain a profit by creating a false electromagnetic record relating to acquisition, loss or alteration of property rights by inputting false data or giving unauthorized commands to a computer utilized for the business of another, or by putting a false electromagnetic record relating to acquisition, loss or alteration of property rights into use for the administration of the matters of another shall be punished by imprisonment with work for not more than 10 years.

Plus court ordered restitution (for whatever that's worth). Gox users will never be compensated but hopefully they can get some satisfaction in knowing that a large portion of the meager wages Karpeles will make in prison and thereafter will be taken from him. But ya, hopefully he serves legit time.
3  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Silk Road Founder Ross Ulbricht Sentenced to Life in Prison on: September 02, 2015, 03:52:11 PM
If he was such a genius he wouldn't be sitting in a jail cell right now.
Living in a Jail or in your House have nothing to do with being a genius or not. As I said, Socrates and Galileo were behind steel bars too and they were genius for sure.

That's true. I'd rather be a free idiot than a genius behind bars.

The difference with Ross is, he knew for sure that he was butting heads with the legal system. If Ross were a genius, he would have used that knowledge to keep himself out of trouble.

I haven't been keeping up with his current status, but if he isn't out, or on the way out, he certainly isn't a genius. After all, his accuser the plaintiff never faced him by taking the stand in court, a basic requirement of law, except if one doesn't require it.

I'd say Ross wasn't a genius at all, except if this is all a show to slander Bitcoin, and Ross is part of the show intentionally.

Smiley

This was not a civil case, therefore there is no plaintiff (it is not J Smith v Ulbricht). This was a criminal case, and therefore the moving party was the government, or to be more specific the DOJ (US v Ulbricht). Whether or not the DOJ met their burden of proof (beyond a reasonable doubt) can be argued, but you can't sit here and say nobody took the stand against him in court because that is not true. The DOJ had witnesses and those witnesses testified. Again, whether the DOJ proved the accusations beyond a reasonable doubt can be argued, but there certainly were people who took the stand to testify for the government.
I agree with several of the posts above. Personally, I think they proved their case, but I think the sentence imposed by the judge was a harsh statement that did not fit the crime. Ulbricht's best appeal will be based on the 4th amendment

5  Economy / Speculation / Re: Is buy and hold a good investment option with price around $230 - Aug 2015 on: August 30, 2015, 02:54:13 PM
If you can hold it for a long period of time, yes. But I don't think the price will be jumping in the near future.
6  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Service Discussion (Altcoins) / Best coins to obtain through faucets on: August 26, 2015, 11:33:01 PM
Hey all
So it really isn't worth the time getting bitcoins through faucets at this point, but are there any alt coins that it is worth the time ie doge, lite coin... I've only done Bitcoin faucets so I am genuinely curious. Or has the ship sailed on everything?
7  Economy / Speculation / Re: $300 in the end of August on: August 23, 2015, 02:29:18 PM
Since the price could suddenly drop to the seabed, of course, it also can suddenly rise to the Moon.

Yes, I never abandon the hope.

Wow such logic!!!  Since an earthquake can suddenly knock down a building, of course, it can also suddenly build one!!!

+1 on lack of sense for the logic... TP- The XT adoption has been the main catalyst of the price decline (aside from the sell off last week) and nothing indicates it has been resolved. Why would the price suddenly shoot up 70$ in 9 days? What on earth makes you think that aside from blind faith? Greece's latest referendum may help the price IF the radical left wins (which it probably won't given that the special election was called for by the opposing faction) and possibly the fed's rate hike in September may help the price IF they do in fact hike the rates (although this has already been factored into the precious metals market). But these are all huge IFs and they won't necessarily move the price. I wish it would hit 300$ by the end of August, but you're dreaming if you actually think it will.
8  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Public still largely unaware of what Bitcoin is, how to use it and how to obtain on: August 23, 2015, 12:39:28 PM
Yep, something needs to be done about that. People will soon realize it is smart to have some pieces of bitcoin just as diversification for when the markets start to slow down again.

I don't think people will soon realize it is smart to have pieces of Bitcoin if the price continues to be so volatile. Huge price fluctuations scare most people, and major dips like the flash crash the other night results in investors and average consumers putting their money elsewhere. BTC has to not only overcome the stigma attached to it as a "black market currency", it also has to overcome the notion that it is the 21st century tulip mania. I tried to convince a friend for months to get into BTC- sent him some links and even gave him a book. He read up on it... I went to buy silver from him the other day and when I offered to pay in BTC he told me to "keep those koopa coins". I think it will take some serious convincing to show people BTC can retain value long-term.

10  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: If somthing bad happend to bitcoin what cryptocurrency will you use ? on: August 22, 2015, 04:12:17 PM
bitcoins just the gun fodder so a proper p2p currency can take hold  Lips sealed

let the corporate, new world bankers types take it Wink

But I fear if Bitcoin doesn't make it, it's replacement will be a Jp Morgan or bank of america block chain. New world banker types won't just try to take Bitcoin, they want it all.
11  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: I'm buying, who's coming with me? on: August 21, 2015, 02:45:35 PM
I have been scooping up small amounts on the dips but usually trading them for LTC. Interested to see what happens on Monday when it halves.
12  Economy / Economics / Re: How much do you think silver will go to? on: August 19, 2015, 02:28:57 PM
I think silver will be between 8 to low teens for quite a while. Fed's rate hike has already been factored in. Won't cause much of a bump. But what do I know- I keep buying and waiting for it to get back to the levels it was at a few years ago when it was hitting in the fifties.
13  Other / Off-topic / Re: DO YOU HAVE 1 BITCOIN? on: August 19, 2015, 11:32:44 AM
yes, at the moment. but we shall see how long that lasts

What do you think'll happen to it?

I think I will spend it Smiley. I have plenty of faith in the system, just little faith in my summer spending habits.
14  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Do you buy physical gold? on: August 19, 2015, 11:22:55 AM
yep, love the stuff -

This is my stash to date, 37.9 troy oz fine gold + about 65oz silver and a little platinum and palladium -

Great collection!  I haven't bought any gold but I have a decent amount of poor man's gold (silver). I used to buy the one five and ten ounce bullion, but now I buy rounds. Almost exclusively buy Eagles- premium is a bit higher but you can sell them to anyone at any point.

17  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / bitcoin options platforms on: August 17, 2015, 03:37:22 PM
Hi all,

I have been looking for a good trading platform for trading BTC options. Unfortunately, I can only buy in & trade w/ BTC (can't buy in w/ cash). Does anyone have good experiences with a specific platform for shorting/going long on BTCs... if so, I would appreciate any suggestions. Also, my apologies if this has been posted before or if this is the wrong section.

Thanks in advance!
