301  Economy / Economics / Re: The Myth of Government Debt on: October 07, 2011, 01:09:27 AM
From accounting point of view, debt always equal to credit. A's debt is B's credit, if both A and B have credit (saving), then there must be some one in larger debt to balance. American government's debt could be balanced by surplus countries' credit.

How do you reconcile this within the Bitcoin economy? Do people with Bitcoin savings owe a 'debt' to some other party?

Or can such savings be viewed as loan with zero interest and no maturity? Which is the definition of money.

So why do we have to pay taxes if the govt can create as much currency as it wants?

Taxes are a tool that help regulate inflation and reallocate financial capital. Hypothetically, yes the government could simply print more money to fund public services, but the amount of money needed would probably cause some sort of dangerous inflation.

Given that States with a sovereign currency don't actually need to tax to fund themselves, then taxation performs some 'other' purpose. Taxation is a much more effective method of handling inflation, than interest rates, because taxes can be tailored to target the inflation causing areas of the economy, this is currently impossible with interest rates. Also since America, and most of the world is experiencing economic difficulties, taxation combined with spending, can reallocate money that is not being spent to areas of the economy that will cause spending. That is, taxing people with large sums of money, and giving it to people who will spend. For each financial exchange between people there is a corresponding 'real' exchange between people, and this exchange is the source of economic growth.

One important part that I think is missing.  Currencies also work on trust.  We trust bitcoin because it's open source, right?

It's been shown that many economies can operate quite well on very low taxes, but the trust in the currency actually falls when there is less tax.

IIRC Keynes advocated printing up to 20% GDP a year for the 'public good', which could take the form of lower taxes.  It's a double edged sword, because printing leads to inflation, but capital injections boost the economy.  Yes, you need to be careful not to print too much.

I've been pondering for a while this question about the need for a national debt or not.  Still undecided, but there seems to be an element of 'we should do it this way, because that's what we've always done'.

As bitcoin has proven, pre conceived notions can sometimes be turned on their heads!
302  Economy / Economics / Re: Another interesting thing - Barter on: October 04, 2011, 01:08:27 PM
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barter

At the end of this article:

Difficulty in storing wealth: If a society relies exclusively on perishable goods, storing wealth for the future may be impractical. However, some barter economies rely on durable goods like pigs or cattle for this purpose

This is funny, seems using money to store wealth created an illusion: The goods were perishable, money is not, so money holds wealth longer. But what happens when goods are all perished and only money left?

From the same article:

Contrary to popular conception, there is no evidence of a society or economy that relied primarily on barter.[2] Instead, non-monetary societies operated largely along the principles of gift economics. When barter did in fact occur, it was usually between either complete strangers or would-be enemies.[3]
303  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Bitcoin and the Semantic Web on: September 25, 2011, 10:16:22 PM
Does anyone know if an 'ontology' already exists for bitcoin to integrate with the Semantic Web an HTML5?

See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Semantic_Web

If not, does someone want to help create one?

Not sure I understand what you mean. In which way Bitcoin would integrate with the semantic web? The only way I know is, perhaps, that a Bitcoin oracle/referee could use the semantic web to settle Bitcoin bets, when a statement about the state of the world is needed.

The idea is that the key terms in the bitcoin ecosystem are recorded in an 'ontology' or schema.  In this way you can add semantics to a webpage, for example, to make it machine readable.

305  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Bitcoin URIs on: September 25, 2011, 02:18:46 PM
That's interesting.  I've been looking lately through forum posts about URIs and in the wiki.

I'd like to try and help get the bitcoin: URI scheme written up and approved by IANA.

The format should be something similar to the mailto: URI scheme:

http://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc6068

The W3C have kindly offered some assistance, so hopefully there's a reasonable chance that that it will get the thumbs up.

306  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Builds for Ubuntu? on: August 01, 2010, 01:00:43 PM
Well, I couldn't find any good directions on how to package a .deb for a ppa, but I haven't given up hope yet.  Anyone who can throw some documentation my way would be awesome.  Right now I'm trying a different strategy.

I run ubuntu on my desktop maybe I can help ...

EDIT: first time I've tried it, but I made a launch pad project here: https://launchpad.net/bitcoin  hopefully we can work out how to do ppa etc.

Would you add me to the maintainers of the project on launchpad? My username is cdecker and I have ready built deb packages from my efforts on openSuse Build Service http://bit.ly/bUqiRY

Sure!

I've created a team

Added you ..

Id use FOAF and web of trust ...

^^^

Is foaf added to the metadata of your site?

I like the web of trust idea because it provides a swarm backup for a review/rating site.Say you had a site like yelp where companies game the system by paying for positive reviews. If the reviews on the site were different to the reviews in the cloud it would raise red flags. It would be almost impossible to game both the swarm and the site if there was a big enough swarm. The company would have to hire more reviewers than the swarm contained to affect anything.Much like bitcoins....

If you had access to the data from the web of trust you could display it on your site as well which would make it open for anyone to compare the two immediately.

Lots of ways to add the meta data, in html tags, in meta tags, or in a separate document linked in (like a stylesheet).  I use foaf in my webpages, and also link to my bitcoin address.  e.g. the semantics would be me hasAddress "1DeNqFwDSooBxSDYHSDA3CvnhjA84wfdFz"

You can then say things about yourself, your accounts, your public key and your relationships.

It's quite simplistic really, just a data typed version of the hyperlink, which links documents, instead here you are linking people, accounts and other info.  so a basic web of trust is built in, but we can do smarter things ... with time ...

309  Economy / Marketplace / Re: The Worlds First Sudo-Anonymous Poker Tournament ? on: July 27, 2010, 06:42:27 PM
I'm a college student, so I'd prefer to play during the week... don't want to cut into my bar time at all hahah.
Also, 1800(6PM) EST is like 1500(3PM) PST, which kind of screws over out brethren on the west coast/in the rockies.  Might I suggest 1900(7PM) EST?  That would give them some more time to get home.  I'm in Minnesota though, so it doesn't bother me at all.

Played 3 games (with eps) on headsup today ... was pretty fun! Smiley

Next game scheduled for Thursday ... around 5PM uk time (I think that's 5 hours behind EST, so midday EST).

Would be great to have some more people play ... let's chat on IRC too ,,,

Holy crap count me in.

Maybe we should start with some 'freerolls' to get the game going ... I'd donate 1BTC to a freeroll jackpot ...

Which days can you play?  FIll in the doodle poll.

http://www.doodle.com/cnrz8anc4t5nw4rs

I suggest a time of 6PM EST?

313  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Introducing: Bitcoin Networked Economy Specification v0.01-DRAFT on: July 26, 2010, 06:58:03 PM
I'm writing a modular Django app that implements this and is relatively easy to integrate with your own systems. It would be cool if someone did a similar php application.

What interest me most are the "Friends" and "Blacklist" specifications, since they can be used for building a web-of-trust, and I don't think we should limit this to the Bitcoin economy only. Should we use a URL or some other unique identifier instead of a domain name, so you could rate services or individuals who don't have a domain of their own? That would integrate better with social networking systems like Diaspora. Some services also accept https connections only.

Diaspora isnt even released yet.

Have you thought about using FOAF?

http://www.foaf-project.org/

(ive spoken to the disapora folks and they should hopefully be compatible with foaf too -- gnu social is -- and google are getting on board).  I've already posted to Gnu social and diaspora about bitcoin ...

FOAF havent the big marketing effect of disaspora, it's a grass roots effort that's been going 10 years, and already has a distributed social net of 100 million users, and lots of working code.  No other system of its kind comes close.  This is the system favoured by web standards (W3C).  Quite a few of us are building things with FOAF, so I'd really hope it's compatible with bcspec.

Here's an example of decentralized browsing of profiles.

http://foaf-visualizer.org/?uri=http://www.w3.org/People/Berners-Lee/card

To endorse someone simply put A  foaf:knows B in your foaf file.  And you've started a white list.  I'm starting to build bitcoins solutins too ... so hopefully we can keep in touch!

Note: I've *already* integrated bitcoin into my foaf ... and a web of trust is being built.

Code:
<rdf:Description rdf:about="#bitcoin1">
    <foaf:accountServiceHomepage rdf:resource="http://www.bitcoin.org/"/>
    <foaf:accountName>

I'll send BTC 0.02 to anyone who visits the following articles site:
http://quezi.com/
and scrolls down to the bottom of the page (6 articles). If you're interested in the articles you can read them, but it's not compulsory. Then post your Bitcoin receiving address here, or send it to me in a private message.

Done!

315  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / My Two Cents ... on: July 26, 2010, 02:06:47 PM
Just a bit of fun ...

I thought I would open a thread asking ...

"For what actions would you pay 2 cents BTC?"

I'll start with an example:

If someone can get the following post up to 20 Diggs, post your address, and I'll transfer $0.02 BTC to your account.

http://digg.com/business_finance/bitcoin_0_3_released_peer_to_peer_anonymous_currency

Anyone want to digg it up?

EDIT: whoever digged it up to 20, claim your BTC 0.02 ... dig it up to 25 for another 0.02 ...
316  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Exchange Market Report 25 July on: July 25, 2010, 04:16:13 PM
The end of the week saw a sharp decline in exchange prices from earlier in the week.  Both markets, Mt. Gox 24/7 Bitcoin Exchange (GOX), and the original Bitcoin Market (BCM) showed steep price drops (~-40%) with high Exchange rates from 0.087 - 0.093 USD/BTC down to 0.054 - 0.059 USD/BTC.

Based on historical prices from early July, the BC exchange rates have shown roughly a 10-fold increase in BTC market valuation (0.005 to 0.05).

Recent Bitcoin generation woes with the Pitock hubbub, and the recent Slashdotting of Bitcoin have led to high proof of work difficulties, and are the likely causes of the recent price bubble.

Ask to Bid volume ratios on GOX are currently running nearly 3 to 1 (Ask Volume: 9026.99  Bid Volume: 2893), down from a speculative high of about 4 to 1 on Saturday, and show the markets' need for BTC spending outlets.

The Bitcoin crypto-currency system has recently surpassed the 70,000 block milestone, leaving 3,500,000 potential BTC in existence with a current valuation of about $200,000 (USD).

Awesome analysis! Smiley
317  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: How to check status of bitcoind on: July 25, 2010, 07:04:37 AM
I am running bitcoind under linux. I see it chewing up a lit of CPU time but the system is still responsive so I am assuming it is just keeping the box busy. However, I would like to check in on it occasionally to see how it is doing. When I run the bitcoin app it tells me that port 8333 is in use. Is there any way to check on what the daemon is up to?

Is there a way to see what payments have been sent out?

320  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Introducing: Bitcoin Networked Economy Specification v0.01-DRAFT on: July 25, 2010, 01:01:58 AM
I've published a draft set of specifications according to my original post here: http://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=324.0

You can access Bitcoin Networked Economy Specification v0.01-DRAFT at the following URL:

http://bcspec.org

I would love to hear input and feedback from anyone. The goal here is not to make a perfect spec (that would be impossible), but to get something that works well enough and is as simple as possible.

In my original post, I mentioned XML. I decided to specify everything as JSON and JSON-RPC (for the planned protocol bits), because it's much cleaner, simpler, and easier to implement.

If you have any products or services you'd like to offer, you can start right now by uploading a couple of JSON files to your web host.

I plan to implement a v0.01-DRAFT-compliant spider soon, which will begin to aggregate any products and services people are offering.

-Andy

This looks very cool.  I've already partially integrated bitcoin into the FOAF distributed social network.

If we can also make the meta data well namespaced (e.g. with RDF style), this stuff could scale really well, and hopefully be deeply integrated with the Web.  Maybe we can try and get this to standards level too ... one thing at time tho ... a great start!
