5  Economy / Computer hardware / WTS 2x Antminer S7 Batch2&4 162chip 0.75BTC + ship on: November 07, 2016, 11:33:43 AM
0.75 + actual shipping.  Right now running @ 550mhz for optimum heat/power.  This is the higher chip count model of s7 - qty 162 - thus more efficient than later batches.  The Batch 2 runs 4.6Th @ 575mhz, and Batch 4 runs 4.8TH @ 600mhz.  Also the controllers handle more s7 blades if needed.  Sold only as a pair.  Run completely stock Antminer settings, never had an issue.
6  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Simple S9 repair/overclock guide on: November 02, 2016, 11:27:49 PM

Thought about doing it to the dozen s1's I had back then but -- each board had 4 regulators to tweak by hand and x2 per miner x12 miners.... just not worth my time to bother with.

Yeah I had 16 AntMiner S1s at one time, sold off 8 and did the "pencil" trick with the other 8.  Man that was a rough two days!  Huge PITA to get the exact value needed, was really just trial and error!  The S1 was a bulletproof miner that would stay up for ages, after modding them about half of them would restart every couple days.  But hey, it dropped the power usage in half!

I still have those 8 modded S1s on a shelf in the garage.  I should probably toss em!
7  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Bitmain Announces the Antminer R4 and APW5 Power Supply, Designed for Silence on: November 02, 2016, 11:17:06 PM
Anyone know when the R4 will be back for sale?

Since its getting colder, I really would like to spend the $150/month on power the next few months as electrical heating in the house instead of my garage!
8  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Local Electricty company shut me down for mining. on: October 25, 2016, 06:45:25 PM
Unbelievable  Grin

Whats unbelievable?

He's running about 5600KWH per month.  His power company wants to move him to the commercial rate schedule to compensate for the extra draw.

Anything else here is FUD.
9  Other / Off-topic / Re: BTC Hardware (noise) actually provides security??? on: September 21, 2016, 03:25:21 AM
Interesting theory.  I think my dogs do the best job keeping people away!

I've been more concerned about not displaying any bitcoin logos so even if they are noticed by someone it's hard to know what that noise is all about!
10  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: BITMAIN Tech WARRANTY SCAM ! WILL NOT REPLACE DEAD ANTMINER S9 on: September 20, 2016, 08:03:47 PM
In China things work differently.  Signing a contract is "just the beginning of the business relationship" and  "everything is negotiable".  You should be honored to buy a Chinese product, it is a privilege.  But of course, its always buyer beware.

In the USA, we hold to the rule of law.  You signed a shitty contract?  Too bad.  Honor it or go down in flames.  And the customer is always right, and can return anything anytime.

So the Chinese rejecting a warranty claim right away is par for the course.  After all, a lot of claims are a result of user error/stupidity and they hope you just go away, and better luck next time.  For some reason, in China it seems like blatant lies and scams are frowned upon, but getting the better end of the deal due to circumstances and a little fudge here and there is perfectly acceptable.  (which in capitalism, has some similarities to that also)

Personally I learned to fight with "support" a long time ago.  If you have the facts to back you up, and you are persistent, it can work out for you in the end.

With the Chinese its ALWAYS CYA, CYA, CYA!

I purchased an Avalon 2 off eBay just to see if it was a viable product when they first came out and were being made by all kinds of fly-by-night shops using reference designs and raw chips (I was running 16 Antminer S1s, and just wanted to see if the new Avalon chip was any good).  Fortunately I paid with Paypal, just to see.

When the DHL box finally arrived, you could hear a big "clunk" when you would change box orientations.  Ugh.  Opened it up and found half the modules and stripped from their mountings and were flying around lose within the case.  One of the ribbon cables had been sheared through by a massive heatsink, and the interior was a mess.  Had to order a new ribbon cable, tape up some other wires, put everything back together and fortunately it actually worked!  But it was a dual-PSU monster that I could tell from the beginning was a failed design.  After only running for just a couple weeks I got a phone call from the wife saying the smoke alarm was going off and my garage is full of haze and smells like burnt electrical!  Sure enough, dead Avalon 2!  Opened that case with eBay/Paypal ASAP, and made sure to play my cards right.  Of course the seller first started out with "well it must be your PSU!"  But since I had 16 other working Antminers on PSUs I knew that was not the problem, and had already fixed their shitty miner once.  Seller promised up and down that "just cancel the case, ship it back to me, and we will fix it."  I told them no way I would cancel my case, as then I knew I would instantly be out a few thousand $!  Finally eBay let me take it to a "computer repair shop" where I promptly described the problem, told them what I did to attempt to revive it, then said "You can try your best to fix it, but don't waste your time, I just need a letter stating these are not consumer or shop repairable".  Best $60 letter I ever bought! Paypal found the case in my favor and I got my money back.  Of course I had to ship the POS back to some random address in China, which I did via USPS for $100 or so.  But not before I got a Chinese sob story about how "he has had too many returns and this is causing him problems with is eBay and PayPal accounts and they are now frozen!"  WHAA! Icing on the cake was all of a sudden 3 months later, after I put this all behind me, I get a the SAME Avalon 2 back in the mail, but with about 10x more stamps/labels, and this time completely destroyed!  Like not a single part was still mounted, case dented, holes in cardboard box, everything!  I guess they couldn't find the return location or it had been rejected, but fuck them because I returned it in the same shitty packaging they sent it to me in!

TL;DR:  Fuck Chinese business practices.

/rant ...  sorry I guess that just got me a bit worked up remembering that whole fiasco!  Anyway, at least bitmain isn't THAT bad!

11  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Bitmain's Released Antminer S9, World's First 16nm Miner Ready to Order on: September 15, 2016, 06:02:12 PM

The btc  game has become a game of what do you pay for power?

A new s9 at 1540 + 60 to ship is 1600 usd if you are blessed with 3 cent power

and you can get 12.93th using 1400 watts

you will earn 500 usd in 1 one year with the machine still in hand.

that is a good deal if you have a good warranty.

look at projections for 4% growth and 3% growth  in both cases if you have 3 cent power  you make good money in a year.

phillip -

While I would normally agree with that assessment, the problem is Bitmain can drop the floor out of the market any time and sell the miners for $500 each, then the resulting flood of new hashpower and a few 12% jumps tend to kill that 3-4% average.

See:  Avalon Classic Batch 3, S7 Batch 1/2/3/4, etc
12  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Bitmain Announces the Antminer R4 and APW5 Power Supply, Designed for Silence on: September 07, 2016, 08:32:56 PM
Without commenting on how well it did or didn't sell, it was pretty suspicious that the bitmain website basically stopped syncing with BTC\USD price when it went above $593 and then when it stayed higher than that, both the S9's and the R4 went to sold out within hours of each other.

I love that us on this forum collectively can catch all these little tricks bitmain uses.  I'm sure they have all sorts of fail-safes built in to prevent accidentally giving buyers a real deal!

I remember when batch numbers actually meant something back in the Avalon days or early Bitmain days.  Now they just are around to make people feel a sense of exclusivity and scarcity.  I got suckered into Batch 2/4 S7s that finally ROI'd recently, IF I take electricity OUT the calculation (and I'm less than $0.07/KWH!), so the reality is I am still down overall.  Amazing how the S7 started above 5BTC and just a few months later was selling for less than a single BTC.

I just see that same scenario playing out with the S9/R4, there is no "bottom" to the market.
13  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Bitmain Announces the Antminer R4 and APW5 Power Supply, Designed for Silence on: August 30, 2016, 08:24:26 PM
Accidentally release it at double the intended price? I was excited at the potential of mining at home again.. nevermind.

Bitmain's early batches are always spendy.  When this doesn't move they will drop the price.

How many people overpaid for Batch 1 S9s?  Plenty!

Bump!  All PMs replied.

Fun Fact:  Paid 5.8 & 4.4 BTC for these Batch 2/4 S7s originally.

17  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Bitmain's Released Antminer S9, World's First 16nm Miner Ready to Order on: August 20, 2016, 08:44:52 PM
Seems like everyone is running their S9s in controlled environments?  Can anyone who is hosting this summer in non-ideal conditions answer the question?

 - What is the approx hottest ambient temp you can run an S9?
18  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Bitmain's Released Antminer S9, World's First 16nm Miner Ready to Order on: August 19, 2016, 05:13:18 PM
Now that these new batches are shipping, finally consider getting one of these.

If I sacrifice speed and downclock what is the hottest ambient temp you can run an S9? My garage has a couple S7s  @ 550mhz that stay about 60C with 100F outside temp.  Summer is about over so I don't expect to have to fight temps much longer.

Gotta love Bitmain being in full control over new gear (NOT!).  I called it, they will drop prices like a rock as they get more units built and screw early investors.

I logged into my bitmain account for the first time in forever and made the mistake of seeing my old orders:  Batch 2/4 S7s for 5.8BTC & 4.4BTC respectively.  Hah!

The S9 is only 2.5BTC now but if I wait a couple months it makes me think 1.5BTC is plausible!

19  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: LOOKING FOR -- IBM 2980W Power Supply PINOUT (39Y7414) DPS-2980ABA on: August 08, 2016, 11:59:02 PM
Here is the answer - posted to you in the s9 thread also:

But you simply don't have enough space to solder all wires to the PSU, you would need to build your own fanout connector.  And I would def make sure to use all 6+ and 6- connectors so you don't melt down the PSU's connections!

(for reference I Google'd   IBM 2880W pinout site:bitcointalk.org  and it was the 8th result down titled "Help starting an IBM 2900W PSU - Bitcointalk" )

Slightly off topic ... sorry

I know some of you guys are running them with your S7's and S9's.....

I'm looking for the pinout diagram for the IBM 2880W / 2980W power supply. I'm not looking for a breakout board, I'm looking to solder pigtails and eliminate the friction contact losses/heat of a breakout board. Plus save $ by not buying breakout boards.

Thanks
