my overdrive file:
Thank you for that.

So I checked, and at 900MHz the chip receives 1.088V, the same as yours.  Undecided

I was able to run the card at 850MHz all through last night. So it's just 900 MHz specifically that's giving me unhappy times. Maybe I should try 899 ...

I am under the assumption that this is what happens when you hit the BIOS limit. I could be wrong.
Perhaps. The odd thing is that, under Windows, it can run 900MHz for a while. About an hour. And then it goes KERBLEWIE. If it were a hard limit in the BIOS I assume it would just go KERBLEWIE immediately.

Also, in Windows it resets the driver when things go awry, instead of locking up like Ubuntu does. From there, it's back to normal (at 900MHz), except the miner (phoenix) has stopped because of the driver reset.

Any chance of updating the app so it will work with slush's pool?
Yup, it's on my todo list, supposing anyone is actually interested in this gadget. I only need it for deepbit, so that's what I implemented first.

He isn't returning JSON. He's returning YAML.

604  Bitcoin / Mining / Windows Gadget: Miner Status on: April 28, 2011, 11:30:50 AM
I was inspired by the work that stakhanov did on his Mt. Gox Windows Gadget.

So, I made a Windows Gadget that shows your miner's current hashrate and balance. It currently works with deepbit.net:

http://www.sendspace.com/file/m1f3lb
http://www17.zippyshare.com/v/74692973/file.html
SHA256: 8bd7d3c8ffc4733eef7e891a774e0e4da05ada4fc20e7bd95eb9501e5ba93cfd

Feedback is welcome!

I was thinking of putting it on bitcoinservice for 1BTC like stakhanov, but then there would be no way to refund/update/etc. So ... here it is for FREE! Just cause I love you guys and gals so much Wink

Enjoy!

The BIOS has clock speed limits.
I know. This board lets me go up to 900 without any mods, in all the overclock tools I've tried. So that isn't the issue. The issue is that going to 900 makes the card go KERBLEWIE.

Quote
The 5870 bios ups the voltage allowing it to run at higher clock speeds.
Thank you for clarifying what you meant. I remember that AMDOverdriveCtrl let me adjust the voltages. If that's true, would that be the same as BIOS flashing? And what kind of voltage is appropriate for 900MHz?

I'm a bit wary of BIOS flashing the card, since I don't have a spare PCI card to help fix it if things go awry (only one PCI-E slot on that machine Sad )

Thank you for the suggestions and help so far!

Feature Request: JSONP support

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/JSONP

Needed for special cases of dealing with JSON. Specifically, a webpage running JavaScript cannot fetch JSON from a different server, because the browser will block such a request (Cross Domain Request).

JSONP is a workaround. For example, a request for "http://deepbit.net/api/myapikey?jsonp=parseRequest" would result in:

Code:
parseRequest({all the normal json data})

It's something I'll personally use.

Thank you!

The highest I could get my 5850's to before freezing was 875. I got them up to 900 by flashing them with 5870 BIOS.
Just to be clear, you had to flash your BIOS to make it stable, or to even set it to 900?

I can set my card to 900 MHz no problem. It's just that the display freezes and I have to do a restart (REISUB).

What does that BIOS do that would prevent the card from failing at higher clock speeds?

I recently bought a Sapphire HD 5850 ($150 after taxes) ... so I can race it against my FPGAs  Tongue

I have Ubuntu 10.10 32-bit, fglrx 8.801, 2.1 SDK. Using aticonfig I can overclock up to 900MHz, which is good enough for me, except that at that speed it freezes within a few seconds (screen no longer responds; have to REISUB). It ran overnight at 765MHz just fine. In Windows it could run at 900MHz for about an hour, and then Windows restarts the driver because it stops responding.

Is my card just a weak batch and won't ever get to 900MHz stable, or is there something else I can do?

Thank you!

I've never seen this from the current pools.
http://bitcoinpool.com/index.php shows everything, totally transparent.

Deepbit shows when blocks are found and how much the miner gets, but I don't think it shows what other people get. No idea about slush.

Quote
Any idea how to calculate it?
I believe it's calculated from number of shares received over time. Look around for a recent thread that discussed the calculations behind that.

I like the idea of not having to register a username/password. It certainly prevents the hacking that sites like Bitcoinpool are experiencing. Stats would be nice though. I'd particularly like to know the total pool hashrate.

Your calculation seems correct but I wonder about the 5W. You still need the power for the rig. Or do you have so many FPGAs that it becomes neglectable??
No rig is required. The FPGAs can be controlled by a micocontroller (and networking module), and uCs use negligible power. Or the micro can be embedded in the FPGA. You only lose power to the supply, which isn't that bad.

Right now, my computer is acting as the controller. Mostly because I don't have any micros laying around.  Tongue

Quote
That's nice, but what about capital costs to buy all those FPGA miners?
And there's the rub.

I suspect I can get 160 MH/s out of a Xilinx Spartan-6-150, which is something like $150 in onesies. That might add up to a $300 BOM for a custom board. It doesn't compete directly against a GPU card, but if you factor in that GPUs require an entire rig it might just work. *shrugs* As always, I'll keep people updated on my progress.

And of course a full ASIC spin, or even franken-ASIC (hardcopy) would dominate no problem, assuming available demand to cover the cost of that.

so just to clarify, everytime I call Getwork I get a different formatted data hash to work on? Then if the miner finds a block it sends it back with getwork[data] to claim it?
Yup. The miner sends back data with a valid nonce injected into the data. Bitcoin/bitcoind will check to make sure it's correct, and if so it adds it to the block chain and thus receives its shiny new 50 BTC.
613  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: Please test: New Experimental Pool on: April 28, 2011, 12:05:23 AM
Throwing 50MH at it for a little bit to help you test.

EDIT: It's accepting shares at about the rate I'd expect, so it looks like it's working to that extent.

Edit the bitcoin.conf file (in the bitcoin data directory), and add a line for each IP address allowed to connect:

Example:
Code:
rpcallowip=10.11.13.15
rpcallowip=10.11.13.16

bitcoin.conf is located at %AppData%\Bitcoin on Windows Vista/7.

Also, and I hope I'm not spamming this thread with my opinion too much, I presume you're going to discuss your American Bitcoin Odyssey? I think that's a great story, and really hits home that Bitcoins are real, useful, and just plain cool  Cool

It wasn't so smooth because I kept getting bogged down in details and I was just going off written notes.
The key to public speaking is practice, more than anything else. Fairytales are powerful because they've been consumed and rewritten by millions of people over hundreds of years. The same will happen to your story as you re-iterate it and get feedback from others.

Mad props to you for doing this!

IMHO it is probably not a good idea to present the "Heavier Stuff" on your Political Implications slide.
Yeah ... I think he's trying to be up-front about it though. Perhaps just "Bitcoins can be used for good, as well as evil?" Or, "Just like any cash system, Bitcoins are agnostic to morals; used for either good or evil intents." A bit wordy, but it gets across the idea that, yeah Bitcoins can be used for evil, but so can every other currency in the world. It's not a problem unique to Bitcoins.

Going to a lecture like that, I'd want to know (in order):

1) What is it (briefly/overview)?
2) How is it currently being used?
3) Is it popular?
4) Great! How do I use it?

Your presentation as is doesn't seem to cover 2 or 4, and not as much on 3 as I would, personally, like.

Just ideas/comments, not criticism.

These are the relevant Blocks, total number of Bitcoin, and Difficulty to the nearest integer:
Wonderful! Thank you for putting that together and posting it!

I'm new at this, but according to Eureqa, optimizing for Root Mean Squared Error, the best fit is:
Code:
f(x) = (2.55e-5 * x)^10.4
Where x is the block number.

I also re-ran it in terms of the difficulty period (so, blocks / 2016), since that makes more sense:
Code:
f(x) = (0.0525 * x) ^ 10.2

Difficulty period is 14 days.

So that can be used to predict the difficulty in the future. I guess it will be accurate enough until mining begins to lose appeal.

Here its predictions, for the curious:
