Dude, now you'll certainly be crucified by the Glen Becks of this forum!

You joke, but even though I do love the technology behind Bitcoin, one of the few things that still has me a little on the fence about its future prospects is precisely the feeling that this community is dominated by kooks.

I will concede that early adopters of any disruptive technology are likely to be people on the fringes, which increases the odds they will also be kooks.  However, I reject the proposition that Bitcoin implies kookiness.

I certainly do not count myself as a crank. I'm allergic to conspiracy theories. I have a scientific and sceptical outlook on the world, which also shapes my views on economics.  And guess what, this has resulted in me gravitating towards Keynesianism as the economics theory that is most consistent with empirical observations of economic history and what we know about human nature.  And yes, I do cringe every time the "hive mind" in this forum spouts market-fundamentalism or Austrian mentality.  It may seem paradoxical, but that is precisely why I still hang around here and continue to support Bitcoin.  The concept is too important to let it die because the crackpots took over.

I feel the exact same way you do!
144  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Donate bitcoins to Adam Curry and help get a DSC episode dedicated to bitcoin. on: May 11, 2011, 01:28:38 PM
Though Curry may indeed bring much welcome publicity to Bitcoin, I cannot agree with your statement that he deserves our donations.  I was once swindled into listening to his "No Agenda" podcast, and Oh. My. Goodness.  The guy is borderline schizophrenic with his crazy conspiracy theories.  Moreover, I have never seen anyone so proud about spouting their ignorance to the world.  And I'm not talking about harmless stuff, either.  He went on rants against vaccines and the science of anthropogenic global warming. In the developing world there have been outbreaks of measles and pertussis because parents are not vaccinating their kids as they should.  Children have died, for goodness sake!  And don't even get me started on the wacky global warming denialism...

Anyway, for the reasons above I most certainly won't be donating any money to the likes of Adam Curry.

147  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: adf.ly of Bitcoin on: May 09, 2011, 06:56:03 AM
I think this is a very good idea! I don't see any problems with it at all.

Adds are everywhere on the web (torrents, 4shared, rapidshare, ...), and this is pretty fair since all this services are free!

What Bit_Happy considers "hijacking" I consider a reasonable way to charge your users, only instead of charging money you're charging a very little time of their eyeballs. And you're not doing it for nothing, you're helping to bring to the user that content he wanted and clicked on your link for.

About spammers... they are the "unethical" ones (just like with e-mails), not the service providers.

Ae pessoal, tô lançando oficialmente o serviço hoje: http://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=7522.0

Agora quem quiser comprar Bitcoin já sabe =D

O site aceita depósito, boleto e saldo MoIP.

Pagando via depósito os bitcoins tão na mão em cerca de 2 horas (se o pessoal aqui estiver acordado).

Com boleto bancário acho que leva 1 dia útil (não tenho certeza ainda pois ainda não testamos pagamentos via boletos)
149  Economy / Marketplace / MeuBitcoin - new website to trade BTC for BRL (Brazilian Currency) on: May 08, 2011, 12:14:02 AM
Launching right now this new service where Brazilian people will be able to sell and buy bitcoins through Bank wire.
The first 100BTC will be sold without any fee (you just have to chose the amount with the promotional fee on the combobox), after that we will charge R$1 for each R$15 when buying bitcoins from us.
For sales ( selling bitcoins to us) we're not sure about the fee yet, but it will probably be around 0,5BTC independent of the amount (Minimum of 1BTC)

The service is not automatic, so  our staff might take up to 24h to process an order. But usually it will be almost instantaneous if we're awake =D

Suggestions are really welcome!

Thanks for the suggestion... but it results in a zero balance (!)

I had the same problem.
just removed (after a backup of course) the file "log.0000000004" inside the database folder and it was OK.

kept my balance alright
154  Other / Off-topic / Re: Political compass! (who believes what?) on: May 04, 2011, 11:53:08 AM
I'm curious about the reasons why a left libertarian would like Bitcoin. In my mind, if Bitcoin took over the world then your ideal society would be impossible to accomplish unless it is on small closed communities. Can anyone enlighten me?

PS.   no, I'm kidding, I faked this one.   Grin

Damn! I thought I had just found my lost twin.

Just because I believe in some regulation doesn't mean that I want the government to be able to control each aspect of my life (like what I do with my money).

Are you tired of watching the value of the dollar plummet?
Are you tired of banks charging you fees?
Do you want to take back control of your own money?
Then take a look at Bitcoin!
Bitcoin is the world's first decentralized, anonymous internet currency, and is gaining popularity every day.
It's free to use, free to accept, and free from inflation---forever!
You can use bitcoins anywhere in the world, and their value will only grow with time.

If you ask me... this is really good!

I like the "Do you want to take back control of your own money?" better then "Are you sick of the gov't bailing out Wall St?"
