Sounds like a great idea.
It's only advantageous to use Bitcoin if you're playing to its strengths. Maybe you and others could be on "On Call" for certain hours and videochat with students worldwide.
Could be very valuable, and I can imagine using it in the future.

In short, it's not being wasted.
If all the miners used a mining daemon that limited itself to 1%, not only would someone come along and use the full GPU to profit themselves, but it would make it easier to attack the network.
Bitcoin is designed to operate without trust. As such, it assumes that everyone will be trying as hard as they can.

There are several 50+x BTC transactions feeding into it. Those are freshly generated.
I think it might have been someone buying up coins on mtgox or wherever and funelling them to be used, maybe soon.
I hope it's for something legal.

Bitcoin wallets have recently been implemented in Javascript. That could be used for a Chrome OS plugin which is charged up, and then distributes BTC based on a "mailto:" style markup.

I think it's a great idea, but urge you to get some kind of legal counsel.

I certainly expect totalitarian states to make life difficult for their Bitcoin users.
Whether that's China, the U.S., or Saudi Arabia, it just gives third world countries times to catch up and become Bit-rich.

If Bitcoin dominates, Economics will be very interesting.
I assume most transactions will not bother obfuscating, and that some corporations (probably Google et al.) will reward you for registering purchases (this being an opt-in service), and accepting advertising.
By throwing enough processing power at that much data, I'm sure the smart people can do a very good job linking you with someone with whom you would like to trade.
Could be equally interesting to economics or comp sci students.

That's fair.
For the straightforward transferal of funds, this Clearxchange might well be better than Bitcoin for many users. It currently offers a higher degree of certainty.
It would be useful for your parents to get to used to e-banking in any form.
We should continue to market Bitcoin to those who profit from using it. International trade and Internet trade are, imho, where Bitcoin shines.
This could be an excellent tool for a distributed Bitcoin exchange.
