281  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Romney's tax returns - first Bitcoin extortion? on: September 06, 2012, 02:09:55 PM
Most interesting move might be for an enemy to pay for keeping the files secret. Heck, the person who wrote the whole thing might just pay himself!

Once the bounty for "secret" has been paid, Mr. Romney will have campaign trouble.

Politicians and their games. I prefer not to follow them or play them, it's all so nonsensical.
282  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: Bets of Bitcoin - Bitcoin betting on real world events on: September 05, 2012, 08:28:57 PM
Thanks for the neat service.

As hinted in my earlier sig, I had placed bets on BS&T default. Got some nice customer service repeating the default definition, had a chat about betting in general, won a little over 2 weeks after payments stopped, and was able to withdraw right away. Some bets that came in late were reverted, which is the right thing to do, since there was additional information at the time.

Overall, the site made a good impression to me. I'll use it again as soon as there's something I want to bet about. Smiley
283  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: pirate payments list -- accounts paid: 23/459 on: September 04, 2012, 04:54:22 PM
I didn't claim anyone was at "fault", though that is plainly Pirate and those who gave him money. Trying to warn people of a possible scam should of course be encouraged. Though take it from this newbie, the tone of the discussion has not helped the vibe around this place, and some people on both "teams" have acted disgracefully.

A "vibe" that is includes convenient ignorance, absurd ethics, fraud and lies deserves being disrupted.

Disgrace lies in the eye of the beholder.
284  Local / Trading und Spekulation / Re: mybitcoinbank.de - Erfahrungen on: September 04, 2012, 04:07:16 PM
Hatten die nicht 'ne Adresse in Garching?

Ich kenne da Leute, die hätten mal vorbeischauen können. Aber dann dachte ich mir: "lol ich schicke sie doch nur in den April, da würde eh keiner da sein".
285  Other / Meta / Re: theymos, please BAN all common IP sockpuppet accounts on: September 04, 2012, 02:56:38 PM
There are plenty of users who have lots of IPs, just as there are plenty of IPs that have lots of users. IP banning is a broken concept. I don't know how many people may have accessed Bitcointalk from the same IP(s) as I, and AFAIK none of us has used sockpuppets. Yet. Tongue
286  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Making transition from local BTC wallet -> Online Wallet, but which? on: September 03, 2012, 07:28:19 PM
Check out BitcoinSpinner on Android. Its design makes it a little more secure than classical online wallets: the maintainer does not have direct access to your keys (at least in theory).

It's not technically an "online wallet", but it doesn't get much smaller and faster than that. For a quick, small transaction from anywhere, it's perfect! And for bigger ones, I'd neither use Android nor online wallets.
287  Economy / Speculation / Re: [Poll] Profitability calculator on: August 20, 2012, 10:23:31 PM
I think we have a problem in terminology, I don't understand the scale. How is -300% even defined? Having twice more debt than initial money? Bitcoin exchanges do not allow debt AFAIK.

Also, there's a statistical problem: people who lose tend to go quiet and use the forum less, which gives a bias in the result.
288  Economy / Speculation / Re: Putting things into perspective on: August 19, 2012, 11:32:37 AM
I can't answer the question without a time-scale.

Maybe one day, the Bitcoin market will be mature enough to work on a bigger scale. But it doesn't look like that will be very soon. Just look at the nonsense that was the last month, this sort of thing scares off people who want to do normal business. The Ponzi party should do its part as well. And on the historic graph, that's a lot of sharp straight lines considering we're looking at a logscale plot.

How about a new slogan: "Bitcoin -- because sanity is for the weak"? Tongue
289  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Max Keiser - "Libertarians are Intellectually Lazy & Idiots" on: August 19, 2012, 12:10:53 AM
Who the hell is he, and why should we care?

I like how this thread is kind of concluded with the first answer.

Apparently, he's some loud man who is being funded by Russia of all places. I take it as a compliment to be insulted by that sort.

Also, derp -- the context makes no sense. He's acting as if Libertarians accept the breaking of financial contracts or something. One moment he talks that short-selling is somehow evil, then he's ranting how rocket launchers used by the public solve everything. Tha heck?
290  Economy / Lending / Re: Bryan Micon's List of BTC Ponzi Schemes that should not be listed as "Lending" on: August 18, 2012, 11:46:51 PM
Some1 plz explain to me what this Pirate-based mining software this is:  https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=55819.0   what could a dishonest operator do with what appears to be many clients?

It's a coin laundry that exchanges old coins (at least some clearly coming from BS&T) for freshly minted ones from various pools, paying some extra for it.

It can be used as a smoke-screen to hide activity and as a source of untraceable coins.
291  Economy / Long-term offers / Re: How to Identify a Ponzi on: August 18, 2012, 11:24:48 PM
zyk: I'm here, but just reading because there's nothing to do at this point. Lock is down, clock is ticking for days already.

If you ask me for a guess for the most likely case, we'll just see "delays" until the end of the month, then it's marked as defaulted and the story is over. So unless something strange happens, there won't be much of a show from here on.

I might not be online much when it's concluded, I'm going to be travelling at the time. I'll show up early September to settle the bets, and maybe occasionally in between.
292  Economy / Speculation / Re: BULLISH SIGNAL ON BITCOIN PRICE on: August 17, 2012, 09:39:36 PM
Price rebounded strongly as I suspected.....all the weak hands get shaken out now....

Can't tell if you're joking or serious. ("Shaking out the weak hands" is pretty much a meme from the primary Bitcoin bubble)

I cut out the first part because Roll Eyes
293  Economy / Speculation / Re: When will this bubble pop? on: August 17, 2012, 07:55:59 PM

Yep, I guess we got a very precise answer for that.

This is actually not a random timing: Friday in the US, after an over-heated rally. Look at the main bubble, it also started its main drop on a Friday. (And the order book looked very similar at the time.)
294  Economy / Speculation / Re: Crash!!!! on: August 17, 2012, 07:43:02 PM
lol... what were you guys expecting?

I doubt you'll ever see such an obvious echo bubble again.

Now, saw-teeth please! I know they're rare in echos, but they pay soooooooooo well, I just can't stop hoping for some! Grin
295  Economy / Speculation / Re: Bitcoin Savings & Trust closing! Effect on market? on: August 17, 2012, 07:38:26 PM
So he lost 5000 bet?

Who's "he", just curious?

The shut-down is not surprising, as there are signs of withdrawals but few signs of deposits.

At the end of the month, you will know who won.

BTW, from timing comparisons, this crash would've happened shortly anyway. BS&T should only have been a minor factor.
296  Economy / Speculation / Re: What's your exit strategy? on: August 17, 2012, 12:32:36 PM
  • Set limit order
  • Click sell
  • Send more coins from standby
  • Repeat

My sentiment is now bearish and my strategy is "hit the sell button on a regular basis".
297  Economy / Speculation / Re: Summer Bubble on: August 16, 2012, 11:04:20 AM
Oh no m8! I didn't sell. I'm one of the "primitive btc users", actually those bubbles makes me temporarily rich.  Grin
The problem is that they hurt hard the market, by market I mean REAL economy markets, and not a bunch of "wizards" gathering at Hogwarts as speculators are, which relies more in a stable currency than what value the currency itself helds.

Don't worry: the speculators who cause unnecessary instability lose money on average.

I don't think it's fair to just talk about "speculators" as if they're all one and the same. Ultimately, it's speculators who provide liquidity, allowing larger players to move in and out of Bitcoin quickly and easily. But it needs much more time.

No reason to panic or blame Bitcoin. We can stabilize this beast eventually. Not overnight though.
298  Economy / Securities / Re: [GLBSE] BDT - 3% weekly interest bond, backed by Bitdaytrade on: August 16, 2012, 10:38:42 AM
Sounds like a joke.

Even scammers avoid SQL injections these days, and unsalted md5 passwords? Don't know if legit. Isn't Meni into cryptography? Better double-check this, it sounds like an over-the-top story.

Should you be able to confirm it true though... finish the sentence for yourselves.
299  Other / Off-topic / Re: My Little Pony megathread :D on: August 14, 2012, 01:56:09 PM
This is why we think you are weird.

(image)

It's one thing to like a kid's show. I like several kids' shows, myself. My Little Pony isn't even that bad.

It's the crazy depths that some of you people go to with it that makes the rest of us slowly back away. In this case, there is an obvious intersection with some of the more bizarre kinks. When combined with the fact that this is a children's show, it produces a level of creep-out that would disturb even Michael Jackson.

Trolls will be trolling... what did you expect? Not like any other franchise is free of them. To get over it, watch Derpy watch a lava lamp.

300  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: Bryan Micon tries to infect with a backdoor at his web site on: August 14, 2012, 01:17:45 PM
Well,  as always, what a forum member chooses to do with their own money is none of anyone else's concern.

There's a difference between that and doing PR for something of the kind.

This thread is the same thing as your signature: trying to discredit critics by any means necessary. He has a website at bryanmicon.com, but "at his web site" refers to miconsecrets.com? Also, even if it were his, who ever spreads malware on their own server? It's usually just been infected.

Just wait what people come up with next. Maybe we'll get child porn "evidence" bounties too, when Goat isn't busy anymore.

But the whole method is vain. Even if a child-murdering scammer Nazi posts a valid argument, it's still a valid argument. To someone who judges books by their cover, everyone involved in this discussion looks dubious, and that's okay for the time being. Micon isn't saying "Trust me, I have the better investment." He's saying "Don't trust people too easily."
