121  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Finally! PDF version of "Electronic Payment Systems for E-Commerce" on: May 26, 2013, 01:54:37 PM
Thanks for sharing. It seems pretty obvious that Satoshi Nakamoto is either among the authors of this book or was inspired by reading it. In either case, this book is a gem as the source of the ideas that gave rise to Bitcoin.

Hitesh Tewari and Donal O'Mahony also co-authored an article Performance Analysis of Cryptographic Protocols on Handheld Devices ( http://www.tara.tcd.ie/jspui/bitstream/2262/17160/1/Performance%20analysis.pdf ), which lends even more credibility to the idea that either of them (or both) could be Satoshi.

You're quite welcome. And that is compelling indeed. Smiley
122  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Should Bitcoin form a freedom fighters army? on: May 26, 2013, 07:22:11 AM
No, violence can't accomplish anything an already great idea like bitcoin won't. Besides, it's not like bitcoin has a favorable reputation with governments, last thing we need is to be branded terrorists.

How about a lecture on ways to promote bitcoin in local communities and work on building small alternative economies that way? Organizing, petitioning businesses, etc.

After reading another topic (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=215412.0), I realize that asking people to download files on here is somewhat sketchy! Here is a direct link to view it in-browser: https://cdn.anonfiles.com/1369492145562.pdf - although its 90MB, so it takes a while to finish loading.
125  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Finally! PDF version of "Electronic Payment Systems for E-Commerce" on: May 25, 2013, 01:05:46 PM

Thank you! Fixed in OP.

If anyone can recommend other file hosts I will create mirrors of the download. If there's one where it can be viewable in the browser, without download, I'll do that as well.

Generally society has been moving towards electronic payment systems since the 1970s, but it is only the arrival of the Internet and its vertiginous growth, that has made possible the recent advances in this area.

For the unaware, this book basically describes Bitcoin years before Bitcoin itself even existed, and many claim that the authors, or one amongst them, may be the mysterious and elusive Satoshi Nakamoto. The reasons behind making this book digital and free are several:

1) The book is no longer in print, and it is both expensive and hard to find. This makes it more accessible to the masses.

2) Hopefully this book will aid people in understanding some of the features of bitcoin, and help others in thinking up new and innovative features and technologies.

3) The text of the book could be cross-analysed with the writings of Satoshi Nakamoto to determine if the writing styles match up, which may lead to a match on the identity of Mr. Nakamoto. Software like JGAAP (http://evllabs.com/jgaap/w/index.php/Main_Page) could be used to accomplish this.

4) Seeing as the book is out of print, and it was never a bestseller anyways, it is unlikely that the authors will suffer negative financial repercussions from this text being made public. It is our belief that information should be free.

Keeping in line with the decentralized nature of bitcoin, please re-host, re-share, and re-upload.

127  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Could bitcoin be used to stop trolling by monetize the trolls? BitTroll? on: May 24, 2013, 01:47:11 AM
Interesting idea, but I don't think most trolls care enough whether or not they are financially harming or helping the websites they are trolling on - it's more about the reaction they get from other posters. If anything, it might encourage them as they would enjoy seeing other people spend their own money because of the trolling.

I believe the adage holds true: DON'T FEED THE TROLLS. Internet trolls are unpredictable and any sort of reaction, especially one involving money, is likely to encourage them.
128  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Eyes to the horizon: A bitcoin ASIC project will be announced in June on: May 24, 2013, 01:38:35 AM
I agree that the proposed price of 1000-1200 BTC per TH/s is too expensive. Aiwill, please consider making this project more affordable for everyone involved.

131  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: So um, Avalon, yeah...It's been 2 weeks, and we need some answers. on: April 30, 2013, 01:10:00 AM
There is a lot of people looking for the shipment of batch#2. And due to delay of batch#2, batch#3 will soon be involved to the delay.
What can we do beyond waiting?

I asked/suggested in a similar thread whether anyone has tried calling them? The phone number was in their previous email. I'm sure we have a lot of Chinese friends here waiting for their ASICs, perhaps someone could try calling them?
it's 3 day holiday in china right now.

Hmm, how many holidays do Chinese have Smiley It seems like they got it pretty good. 1 Month long new year, 3 day holiday...etc etc

It *sounds* like they got it good, but the PRC is weird and workers have to work extra days on the weekend to make up for any days off for holiday. "Hey, it's labor day! Celebrate your hard work by having a couple days off! Oh, yeah, but you have to work this weekend and next weekend to make up for the missing days."
132  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Avalon batch [2] countdown! on: April 13, 2013, 02:17:40 AM
Is anyone else worried that Avalon will not actually start shipping when they said they would? I'm starting to feel like a BFL customer with delay after delay after delay.

135  Bitcoin / Project Development / Sending Bitcoins through SMS on: April 07, 2013, 07:09:16 AM
Here's an idea I've been turning over in my head, and because I have neither the time nor the know-how to make it happen, I would like to make it public in the hopes that someone else sees the same utility in it as I do and decides to make it happen.

Reddit's /u/bitcointip allows users to send ANY other reddit user some BTC, whether or not the other person has a bitcoin wallet or even knows what bitcoin is. It does this by using the Blockchain.info API to create a new wallet for each user, and letting users control their wallets with a series of commands.

Is there any reason that this couldn't be done as an SMS service for cell phones? Imagine that I want to send my friend who has never heard of bitcoins a tip, it might work like this:

First, I send a message to BITCN or any other SMS service number. I could type:

Quote
send 3035550000 1.0 BTC

The phone number being the recipient's phone number. The service would then create a new wallet for the recipient, and send a new message to that person:

Quote
You have received 1.0 BTC from [my phone number]. Please reply ACCEPT or DENY.

Tips not claimed within 30 days would be returned to the original sender.

And, like all third-party applications, people would have to be aware that coins stored on the tipping bot wallet are not fully in their control, and for maximum security to withdraw regularly to a bitcoin address that they control.

The framework is already in place with the reddit bitcoin tipping bot, we know all the commands that are useful for something like this. Would something like this really be that difficult to make? I don't think this should even be done as a profit-making business, but instead as a utility for Bitcoin which makes it even more useful and increases the adoption even further.

为什么是英文的啊?

因为他们的目标市场是住在中国的外国人。他们的老板要参加明天的北京比特币聚会,可以催他做中文版。
137  Economy / Speculation / Re: bitcoin-opalypse on: April 03, 2013, 05:25:46 AM
2) BFL doesn't deliver and a scam would also cause prices to go down a bit

Why does everyone assume the price would drop if BFL turns out to be a scam? What if all the people with BFL orders in suddenly realize that they aren't gonna be mining after all, and then decide to buy up more BTC?

I have no idea what would happen, but I could see it going either way.

139  Local / 中文 (Chinese) / 第二个北京比特币聚会 - The Second Beijing Bitcoin Meetup on: April 01, 2013, 09:31:51 AM
Dear Beijing Bitcoiners,

The next Bitcoin meetup will be held on Saturday, April 6th, at 6:00pm. We found a new location, The Garage Cafe (车库咖啡) in Zhongguancun, which will provide us a meeting room and will accept BTC payments for drinks. Please see the end of this message for the address and a map.

The first meeting several weeks ago was a big success, and we are expecting even more people to attend this one. That meeting was an excellent opportunity to meet other bitcoin users and to learn more about the technology, but we are hoping that this time we can discuss ways to increase bitcoin usage in China and what kinds of innovative things it could be used for here.

Address: The Garage Cafe (车库咖啡) Beijing, Haidian District, Haidian West Street. No. 48 Xin Ding Hotel (鑫鼎宾馆) Bldg. 2 (At the Southwest Corner of Beijing University, on the south side of Haidian Bridge). Go past the "China Bookstore" 中国书店 and walk down the pedestrian street about 100 meters. The cafe is at the end of this street.

You can take the subway on line 4 and get off at Zhongguancun station, exit A. Walk west past the next three roads, about 400 meters.

If you are lost, please call the cafe at +86 10 8262 7127

可惜网站都是英语,但他们可发至全国各地。我不是为他们工作,我就是给他们介绍比特币的。我很兴奋中国终于有个接受BTC的购物网站!
