1  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Service Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: Steemit.com: Blogging is the new Mining on: May 11, 2016, 07:00:03 PM

Kind of funny how you use the word objective, while the only one in this conversation who isn't biased to this project (or to any competitor) is me. The only one refusing to be objective here is you, since you are paid to contribute to this project and to this thread.

I am calling the launch methods (relaunch after miners crashed, lack of instructions, wallets) very shady, I am also calling the description of the previous ANNs shady together with the "no premine/no instamine and fair launch" and I am also stating that every investor who dares to touch the project on exchanges will get dumped on while you are converting STEEM to BTC to fund your work. I am also calling the lack of information about these in this (now 4th) ANN shady. I am being 100% objective while stating this and I have exactly 0 hidden agendas while doing so, because I am not invested in any competitor project and I am just here because I follow the development of altcoins.

You got a problem with my objectivity? How about yours? I will keep repeating these things until you start to understand them. Nothing you stated in the half page wall of text you responded before actually invalidates or answers these points. You can write "b-b-but we need funding somehow.... w-w-we mined them and we also work for them" all you want, but that doesn't change the fact on how your shares were mined or how you fail to give proper information for any potential investor in the current ANN thread.

To say something positive aswell, the project itself, the codebase and everything else would be good and it would have a future.  The way you chose to run the "funding" of the project (which is also explained in the blogpost) is against the general idea of crypto-currencies and fairness. So many projects didn't need to do it, so many developers managed to rent miners (hash) or whatever, because they knew that they will stick to their project and it will be worth a lot more.

You keep making false claims:

1. There was one ANN thread for the initial launch
2. There was one for the relaunch
3. There is this thread  (this thread is really about steemit.com vs the steem blockchain)
4. I haven't made any other threads (so your facts are wrong).

Second you keep making false claims about the need for relaunch, anyone who looks at the github commits will see the legitimate hard-fork-creating bug that necessitated the reset.
Third you admit that you will just keep repeating yourself rather than help to define terms
Forth by your definition, objectivity is impossible for anyone who gets paid, while you defend your objectivity with ad hominem attacks.
Fith you keep making false claims about our ownership, which has been transparent and stands at 57% at this point in time (not the 80%+ numbers you throw around).

Quote
I am also stating that every investor who dares to touch the project on exchanges will get dumped on while you are converting STEEM to BTC to fund your work.

Aside from the "derogatory" / "inflammatory" use of the word "dump" to describe the process of selling our stake to make profits that we can reinvest in ourselves to continue improving steem.  We will sell our stake, take the profits to cover our work.  But you ignore entirely the value of the work we have and will continue to do.  But just to make you happy, I have no problem adding a line to the main page revealing that steemit owns 57% of all STEEM at this point in time.

I've never seen one of the steemit guys advising anyone to buy in. The OP doesn't even contain links to exchanges. Instead, it promotes the free signups.

Your definition of a fair currency distribution wasn't met, you made that point clear. It would've been possible to do so without showing that you have no idea of what steem is in the first place.
Let me highlight this gem, to add it to the historical records  Kiss
you might want to migrate to an official steem forum.

....

If you would have read half of my comments you wouldn't have wasted time on this wall of bullshit. Sugar coating, avoiding and giving out free lunch money only works with people who have no income and are uneducated.

Everyone has read your comments until you started repeating yourself and making invalid points that have already been proven otherwise.

Run along now the adults are talking.

You never invalidated any of my points. Anyone with half a brain can read through our convo here and decide.

Talking around something or trying to give it a new definition doesn't count as invalidating.

You assume there is some "old definition" that is objective and universally agreed upon.  Please, define some terms. It is impossible to reason with someone who refuses to actually define terms in an objective way. Once we have some terms defined, then we can look for logical constancy or inconsistency in positions.

It is interesting how people define "fair" because it almost always boils down to wealth reallocation and jealousy (someone wanting something for nothing).

"Fairness" can mean many things, but usually it means "equal".  There are three kinds of equal: "equal opportunity", "equal outcome", and "equal exchange".

Steem was launched with equal opportunity to mine. Everyone in the world interested in new crypto-project announcements had equal opportunity to follow the thread, setup a VPS, and mine.

But many will argue that 'mining' wasn't equal opportunity because not everyone had time to setup and find out about it.  This is true, mining is not an equal opportunity means to get coins because only 1 in 1000 has the technical ability to mine.  Everyone else just buys when the miners dump. Is it fair that the miners get to dump on everyone else and make a nice profit?  What value did they really bring the the table that makes it 'fair'?

Steemit recognized that more people need to have an opportunity to get involved, in particular we want people to be able to get a meaningful amount of Steem without mining. In this case, there is truly "equal opportunity" for everyone to get a couple of dollars worth of STEEM just for being a person. Not only is that "equal opportunity" but it is also "equal outcome", because regardless of when you learn about Steem you get a meaningful amount just for signing up. This level of fairness can only be achieved if Steemit has a lot of Steem to hand out.

Lastly, there is equal exchange. If you assume the creators own 100% of the fruit of their labor, then they are free to give it away or sell it at what ever price the market will bare. Every voluntary exchange is fair by definition or the parties wouldn't have agreed to the exchange.

So it seems there is one last bone of contention that is at the root of all complaints:  "Steemit can dump and everyone who buys now will lose money".

This statement is true, we could sell all of our Steem over a short period of time during which there are no buyers. Such a move would reduce the price, but it wouldn't change the value. The result of the sale is simply that Steem moved from one set of hands (who could DUMP) to a new set of hands (who could DUMP).  It wouldn't make the project dead, it would just be under new management.

Unlike every other crypto-project out there, Steem actively transfers value from those who are short-term thinkers (ready to dump), to those who are long-term thinkers (willing to hold).  Steem was designed to prevent dumping.

Those who fear dumping assume there is no underlying value in what has been created.  From this assumption they assume creators perceive no value in their creation and thus all selling at any price is profitable. Furthermore, anyone buying at any price is guaranteed a loss.   Regardless of the creators perception of value, others in the market are free to make their own assessment of value.

Suppose Steemit were to burn its STEEM, what would the result be?  Would it increase the value?  Would it make the remaining distribution "more fair"?  What would happen is that the market cap would be redistributed over the remaining holders.  These new holders would realize a huge profit. Not having anything significant invested there would be a larger chance of dumping.

Try out Steemit.com, it is better than "free", it pays you! We are literally giving money away every single day. It has even lower risks than mining (which is just another way of buying in).

some dude's looking at $2G just for posting a link to the coindesk article!

https://steemit.com/steem/@jupiter00000/new-social-media-platform-which-pays-you-to-post

This number will fall as there is more content added and people vote on it.  In effect, all existing payouts are diluted by payouts to new content. In terms of mining, the difficulty is insanely easy relative to the rewards right now!

There was a small oversight in witness vote calculations after the VESTS share split that took effect 2 hours ago.

We have made a new release that fixes those issues and recalculates all witness votes tomorrow at 2:00 PM EST.

We have tagged a release here that all miners / witnesses will have to update to.

 https://github.com/steemit/steem/releases/tag/v0.2.0

There are several other witness scheduling / voting issues that were addressed in this fork.

The good news is that most of the witnesses that were in top are still in the top and the network is still running smoothly through this transition.

Behold the power of DPOS for rapid updates and bug fixes Smiley.

Updated my seed and witness node.

Please vote for cyrano.witness when you find the time!

https://steemit.com/witness-category/@cyrano.witness/cyrano-witness-post

Thanks to arhag one more last minute fix was discovered and checked in.

I apologize to anyone who updated in the past 6 hours.  It is a trade off between making the hyper vigilant update twice now, or everyone else update twice later.  This way we save long-term hardforking code.

exchanges have been notified, witnesses too.

Those of you familiar with BTS know that witnesses can handle emergency bug-fix hardforks with less than 12 hours of notice.
9  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][STEEM][POW] - NO IPO | NO PREMINE | NO INSTAMINE (relaunch) on: April 23, 2016, 08:17:29 AM
NOTICE:

Due to an bug in witness scheduling algorithm all miners / full nodes will have to upgrade to the latest master by block 864,000  (about 22 hours from now).

This is the same block that switches from 100% computational POW to 5% computational POW and 95% DPOS-style voting of VESTING stakeholders.

Please join the steem.slack.com #witnesses channel to get the latest updates and support for this and future hard forks.

Changes to the protocol include:

1. adjusting log-term inflation rate calculations to compensate for compounding effects. The STEEM supply will now double every year (almost exactly) ignoring impact of unpredictable Steem Dollar conversion timings. These rates only change things 1 year+ from launch.

2. lowering the min account creation fee that is configurable by witnesses

3. removing witness creation fee (only one per account)

4. fix some issues regarding the 'temp' account

5. enforce maximum url length to 2048

6. fix some bugs in how reward payouts were calculated, these changes only impact things that happen after July 4th.

7. 1 million to 1 stock split on VESTS.  If you had 1 VEST you now have 1M VESTS.  This is done to improve precision in VESTS / STEEM calculations before it becomes a problem. This is purely an accounting change and has no impact on ownership.

Dev could you plz supply a binary wallet for us?

Soon enough you will be able to do everything except mine on steemit.com.

how much total coins in STEEM?

  "current_supply": "19258974.000 STEEM",

Many are locked up however.

what do u mean locked up? it has premine in some wallets?

No, I mean using the convert_to_vesting command in the wallet. That converts STEEM to VESTS, which can't be transferred, are protected from dilution (approximately means they earn interest) and can only be converted back to STEEM in 100 weekly installments. Most of the supply is VESTS now.

  "total_vesting_fund_steem": "17756500.467 STEEM"

There is also this, which I think is some kind of airdrop I don't understand

  "total_reward_fund_steem": "1329932.000 STEEM",

Reward funds get distributed based upon content submissions and voting on July 4th... that is the first one.  After that it is continuous.  Anyone can earn part of the reward fund by contributing and posting about it on the blockchain.

beta hosted wallet to be released the first week of May.   At that time the average Joe will be able to use Steem.

Anyone looking to have our vote for witness will need to provide a public IP:PORT for a seed node and join #witnesses in steem.slack.com

Once you are in the channel introduce yourself and let us know your Steem account

I would like to be an active witness but i have no knowledge at all about it  Cry

Witness == elected miner similar to BitShares.

Requirements are as follows:

99.9% up time
Responsive to security updates (within 12 hours)
Verified unique identity
Approval of Steem community
Operating a seed node
No double signing

This network plans to scale quickly, so be prepared to upgrade your VPS and bandwidth to keep up.

hi, is there any minimum STEEM/VEST requirements to become a witness?
I currently have steem seed node located at 45.114.118.146:2001 (Jakarta, Indonesia).

No real minimum provided you can establish a unique identity with a solid reputation.  Thanks for running a seed node, I will add you to the list.

We have identified the true cause of the issue and are preparing a patch.  We are also making things "a bit more" robust, no pun intended.

Good to listen that Smiley

Can you guys tell us which users here are the part of the SEEM Dev team, and what role they play?
So far we know:
thereverseflash - the tech guru who knows everything about chain implementation,
steem - the CEO, owner and coordinator

who else?
I suppose abitmore, and maybe dannote..?
I feel there are a bunch of people behind the curtains Smiley

dannote works for blocktrades.us and is supporting Open Ledger in getting Steem listed.  He is not an employee of steemit, inc.
abitmore is a major contributor to bitshares and very knowledgeable about the underlying tech, but does not work for steemit, inc at this time.

The network seems to be moving along, 90% of miners are currently producing blocks on schedule.  Difficulty is around 104 which is where it was before.

Thank you to everyone who was responsive and updated their code in a timely manner.

Of course the network goes down when I'm three hours away from any type of computer.  I have the team working on it we have a temporary solution.   Please update your code to the latest version from github.

It in situations like this that Elected witnesses make a lot more sense than POW mining.  Fortunately many miners Are current bitshares witnesses   They are coordinating  behind the scenes to revive the network.   We have never had to do this with a mixture of random people like POW.

Please forgive any errors caused by speech to text.
