61  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][ZEN] ZenCash: Private, Secure, Resilient CryptoCurrency with zk-SNARKs on: January 05, 2018, 05:17:10 PM
Payments for nodes, have already begun?

I have one of this:

VPS Cloud RAM 2
OpenStack KVM
SLA 99.99%
2 vCore(s)
2.4 GHz
12 GB RAM
50 GB
High Availability (Ceph)

For create a node.
Some payments have been processed for the 18th and 19th of december. I'm waiting for more information that everything went successfully. Smiley

Yup, we're still catching up on sec node payments, but good news is that they've started and we're refining payment process as we go...should be catching up completely over this next week if all goes well.

Nice to hear that ,second wave of node operator im in  Grin

Sweet! We also have some architecture optimizations / improvements needed for scaling, then second wave should be ready for action :-)

Goal is to have the most decentralized node network in the world...we're already not too far off from that!

You say "Zen is an evolution of the Zclassic codebase". Why did you choose Zclassic that is fork of Zcash? Why not Zcash itself?

We could have done it either way, but the team came from the Zclassic community at the time.

We ??
Robert Viglione aka finpunk co founder of ZenCash.

thats a nice move from him to join us on Bitcointalk, well done !!!

I admit, a tad overdue!

Zclassic was a more streamlined clone that didn't have the controversial parameters. We could have done it either way, but the team came from the Zclassic community at the time.

Zencash has a great development team. They keep up with all the good news for investors and are always available to support the community. I'm sure Zen will be the most worthy investment altcoin this year because Zen's price is really low now

Appreciate that feedback, thanks! Being transparent and readily available to the community is a major part of what we're trying to do...we still have so much more work to improve! One project I'm really excited about is our comprehensive user support system:

https://trello.com/c/PaUSi6p3/35-customer-support-system

We're in process of a quick MVP on it, then spec'ing big improvements...goal is to be the Zappose of the cryptocurrency industry, finally treat users like respected customers...

CryptoWatch: Bitcoin’s dominance may face its most severe challenge in 2018

Quote
“Some market commentators think this signifies a structural change, akin to a “flippening” in that the project isn’t keeping pace with more nimble competitors. It’s too early to tell whether this is more than short-term market noise, but one thing is for sure: Bitcoin is the most resilient project in the world and has a long history of confounding its naysayers!”—Rob Viglione, co-founder of ZenCash

https://www.marketwatch.com/story/cryptowatch-bitcoins-dominance-may-face-its-most-severe-challenge-in-2018-2018-01-02?mg=prod/accounts-mw

It is very exciting to see what will happen with Bitcoins marked dominance in 2018. It is indeed threatened, and its dominance is getting low.
As for Zencash i think we have a bright future Smiley

Me too, and we have the benefit of coming later in the game where we could see what works, what doesn't, and what we think are the best opportunities. I still stand by my comment in the MarketWatch article about Bitcoin being massively resilient, but what I left out is that I think there's plenty of room to gain market share because that system is much slower to adapt and has some legacy issues that don't seem to be going away anytime soon.

One only thing it could be improved is the procedure to create a node - too complicate at the moment. I have the necessary coins for that but I cannot afford spending days trying to understand how to do that.
You are right and we are working on this.
For now you can go to Discord channel and ask for help, somebody is always there to help you.

Discord invite https://discordapp.com/invite/SuaMBTb

Exactly and i have to add that the sec node setup procedures was intentionally left raw initially...goal was to have first wave of sec node operators come from IT backgrounds so we have more resilient network from start. Some folks are already working on "miner in a box" solutions, which will likely turn into "sec node in a box" variants soon. Thanks for interest in the project nonetheless. If you want to give a hand at setting one up now, here's a comprehensive guide: https://blockoperations.com/how-to-build-and-operate-a-zencash-secure-node/

I just have to say, MedaR... you are doing great work here keeping the thread informed, and answering what seems like the same question over and over again with no complaint.  I'm sure you are being compensated, but great job nonetheless.

Seriously @MedaR thank you so much for keeping this thread so well informed. You've been aggregating valuable information from across our comm platforms...this is extremely important for the project!

Hi there,

I'm putting together an evaluation matrix of all notable Anonymous/Private cryptocurrencies, and could use your help clarifyiing Zencash.    Feedback including reference to something official (website, whitepaper etc) or Dev comments (or devs themselves) would be very much appreciated.

Thank you!

cool, just commented over there and posted our public roadmap on Trello. Despite obviously loving our own project, i'm a big supporter of the entire privacy space, so it's great to see that kind of discussion evolve.

Very cool comparison. Want to point out that ZenCash is working an R&D project for a DAG scaling solution, more details to come as the project matures. In meantime, here's our roadmap to ref what's in the pipeline this coming year:

72  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: What do you think about ZenCash ? on: January 02, 2018, 06:19:01 PM
As part of the zen team, it's cool to see where the project has come from launching just over 6 months ago. The first 6 months were spent in relative obscurity building our critical infrastructure, the next 6 months will be focusing heavily on user experience, professionalizing processes for the awesome team we've been able to assemble, and moving forward on some ambitious R&D projects. You can see our public roadmap here:

trello.com/b/C0L7hGCV/development-roadmap

Our philosophy has always been to build first, market later...as opposed to the pump hype mentality for a lot of other projects. That said, remember that everything we're doing is an experiment (this entire industry is an experiment), so don't invest more than your comfy losing. It's also good practice to diversify.

Happy to chat about any of the details of the project, but you can also hop into our btctalk thread, reddit, forum, Discord, or Telegram to learn more and engage with the community. All links are available on our website.

did the team activated the weekly challanges yet? i did not saw a specific date on this

hey there, what exactly do you mean by weekly challenges? The secure node system will have daily frequency challenges to registered operators. Is this in ref to something else?
74  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Theymos's list of altcoins with some technical merit on: October 05, 2017, 03:15:51 PM
Very cool you mentioned our project at ZenCash...would be happy to discuss any of the technical details or our business strategy and future plans with anyone anytime.

FYI, i'm one of the co-founders, so obviously biased, but we're doing really cool things that do merit consideration:

-first coin to integrate TLS into the protocol for e2e encryption
-implementing e2e encrypted network called "secure nodes" that we pay part of block rewards
-first zk-SNARK coin to build dedicated private messaging services (integrated into wallet and a stand alone version)
-funding academic R&D to anonymize network propagation (DANDELION++)
-implementing a protocol-level game theoretic treasury model that significantly improves on the Dash version

That's just the start. We have a pipeline of R&D, including a major protocol overhaul, domain fronting, IPFS integration, and major usability improvements and partnerships.

We're starting to get merchants to accept ZenCash now that we're integrated into CoinPayments.net. Any merchant that you know that uses their service to accept cryptocurrencies, please reach out and tell them how awesome this community is and why they should start accepting ZEN!

Adding TorGuard to our privacy ecosystem is an awesome step forward...

While normal transactions take seconds to create, shielded transactions using zk-SNARKs take one to two minutes. That's why engineers have been exploring ways to cut down the time needed to securely generate shielded transactions.

Meet 'Jubjub'
Called Jubjub, the new type of elliptic curve uses math to slash the time needed to create a transaction.
With the technology, Bowe explains in the announcement blog post, the researchers are claiming "record-breaking performance." According to the post, generating zk-SNARKs transactions will now be roughly five times faster while requiring 98 times less computer memory.

One advantage of the tech is that it makes possible zcash transactions on a smartphone, which was infeasible before.

Next year will be very interesting, no doubt!

Zen is fork of zerocoin right? Then what is the state of growth plus is Zen dev also involve in zclassic?

We often see new cryptocurrencies being created due to hard forking an existing project. One of the latest projects to do so goes by the name of ZenCash, a privacy-centric coin which is directly hard-forked from ZClassic, which is a fork from ZCash. Now would be a good time to compare all three cryptocurrencies and see how they are different from one another.

3. ZenCash

Although ZenCash was only recently introduced to the world, the token has gotten quite a lot of attention already. ZenCash focuses on privacy, and represents an “evolved form of ZK-SNARK technology.” It is a direct hard fork from ZClassic, a currency we will discuss in the next paragraph. One feature that makes ZenCash attractive to people is how it offers a protected communication protocol known as ZenTalk. Users can exchange short messages through this network, all of which is powered by blockchain technology.
ZenCash has a maximum coin supply of 21 million, which is the same as Bitcoin. The governance of this project will be done through a Decentralized Autonomous Organization structure, which is funded by a portion of mining rewards. The DAO will also fund future developments and look for additional partnerships. People interested in a more technical explanation of ZenCash can check out the whitepaper.

2. ZClassic

The ZClassic currency – listed as ZCL on exchanges – is a fork of ZCash. The goal of ZClassic is to remove the 20% fee associated with the ZCash technology. The developers of this fork feel miners should not receive smaller rewards just because the developers need additional money to keep evolving the project. Instead, ZClassic issues the full block reward to miners and aims to have development funded by the community itself.
Moreover, Zclassic was designed in such a way there is no deliberate scarcity. That is quite different from ZCash, which seems to thrive on issuing fewer coins during the early stages of the ecosystem being embraced by enthusiasts. ZClassic is the first major fork of ZCash, although it is unclear if other forks may make an impact on the cryptocurrency ecosystem over the coming months. There will be 21 million ZClassic coins.

1. ZCash

Most cryptocurrency users have heard about ZCash before. This particular cryptocurrency is well known for a strong focus on privacy, while still allowing for specific transactions to be completely transparent. There is a fixed supply of 21 million coins, similar to Bitcoin. However, the number of coins is distributed at a much slower rate from the start, which creates artificial scarcity. Moreover, it appears 20% of the block reward will automatically be deducted for future development of the protocol.
The main reason people are attracted to ZCash is because of their use of zk-SNARKS to protect the amount and recipient of transactions. It did not take all that long for ZCash to become one of the top-twenty cryptocurrencies. It is also worth mentioning ZCash was initially called Zerocash, but the name was changed later on. Make sure to check out the official Zerocash whitepaper, as it contains a lot of technical information regarding this project.

Great summary, thank you for posting here. The only mod i'd make is that as of now ZenCash is using the same zero-knowledge tech as Zcash...in all fairness to them, their team brought the tech to market by implementing the zerocash protocol. Zcash remains a leader in SNARK R&D and so they are making that tremendous contribution to society; we're starting with that tech primitive and evolving in a different way, focusing on the user experience, network decentralization and end-to-end encryption, and improving the cryptoeconomics of the system with a DAO and compensated secure nodes. We're also focusing hard on secure communications systems as you mentioned with ZenTalk, which is being implemented as ZenChat standalone messenger, as well as embedded 1-2-1 messaging in our Swing wallet. We'll continue to evolve these comm systems since that's a big part of our roadmap. That's all just the starting point...the plan is to evolve other dimensions of the technology over the next year, so stay tuned for a new and improved roadmap as we move to completion on executing the current one Smiley

Technically, we're a fork of Zclassic, which is a modified clone of Zcash...just removed a set of contentious parameters. The former ZCL lead dev used to be part of ZEN, but then left the project on really bad terms. To my knowledge, he's also removed from ZCL since he was making code mods that the founder, @heyrhett, found to be outside the scope of the project. We no longer have anything to do with that dev, but we're on great terms with Rhett and love the purist alternative that ZCL provides to ZEC (which is also another great project).

My swing wallet was syncing fine until few days ago. Now every time I run it, it gets stuck at this:
(Windows 8.1, latest swing wallet 0.70.3 beta)

From @vaklinov the Swing wallet dev: generally zend is responsible for syncing the blockchain. The GUI wallet only shows progress. There were issues that if the old wallet was used past the hard-fork point the blockchain then did not sync after that even with the new wallet.

The solution is generally to run zend manually with a reindex parameter. This issue describes it:

https://github.com/vaklinov/zencash-swing-wallet-ui/issues/1

Hope this helps and please feel free to join the Slack for closer to real-time access to our devs and other community members who can help.
