So you are new to bitcoin and you started with the "infamous" XT, well I would advise you to use bitcoin core, and maybe move this topic to beginners and help as well.

encrypt your wallet and then back it up
don't forget your password(you can't recover anything without it) and save the backup on an usb stick(not in the cloud)

The important parts are sending and receiving, you might not need the rest at all, if you do, you can ask here again.

Oh, and no you don't need any login, congratulation you are your own bank(with all the benefits and responsibilities)

As a newbie, what made you download Bitcoin XT specifically, and what made you not use Bitcoin Core or any other wallet? I wonder because of all the drama that we are seeing, why would a newbie download Bitcoin XT unless he's knowledgeable of what's going on and has a formed opinion. Why are you supporting the XT fork??

It seems to me that OP randomly downloaded Bitcoin XT because he thought he was the latest version or something, otherwise it doesnt make sense as usually newbies should find Bitcoin core first as bitcoin.org is the first entry that shows up on google.

Naw. Naw you don't! Run a full 50GB node you lazy bugger.
You don't need to know about URL, unless you know what it is about.
Back up wallet is if you want to transfer your same wallet and funds to a different computer. This includes all of your addresses along with your funds, you will not lose any money if your computer crashes, only if you delete your wallet from the appdata. Would still back it up though, just to be safe.
Sign message is the same as the first.
Verify message ^
sending addresses is where you send bitcoin as payments... Sent to a receiving address of the wallet that uses it.
Receiving addresses is where your bitcoin earnings will be sent if you enter any of the addresses to a payout. Is safe to give to everyone. (private key is NOT safe to show)E
Encrypt wallet is to give the wallet a passphrase, not really that much.
Change passphrase? ^

1. Read above 2. Enter your receiving address to the pool/faucet and it will send the cryptos your way.

Hi there, I'm from South Africa.
This means I'm poor, I guess.

Step 1. Uninstall the Bitcoin XT scam.
Step 2. You're a newbie. You can try to run a full 50gb node if you want, but really you should just download Multibit classic and enjoy easy point and click access to everything while using only 3mb or so of hard drive space.

Solo mining is alive and profitable!
Helped? Thanks! 1CXRFh4bDVFBsUzoHMMDbTMPcBP14RUTus

XT Drama aside, i'd go with that. Then when you're familiar enough, Multibit HD can be a step up if you're managing a fair bit of Bitcoins.

Bitcoin XT node is already 50gb? wtf. I thought the blocksize increase wasn't already working. What will be the size of the XT blockchain in 1 year?

Why would a newbie be downloading and using XT? The Core vs XT debate has triggered a new unforeseen problem. Newbies thinks XT is a new more advanced version of BItcoin Core!  Cheesy

OP should stick with Core or a more simple deterministic light wallet (no need to download blockchain) like Electrum.

Uninstall the Bitcoin XT scam.

That's quite strong accusation to make. Do you have hard proof that Bitcoin XT is a scam or are you just trolling?

What a bunch of cunts.

You cant argue so you forced your opinions on someone?

I think he made a right choice, one wants to be sure on the longest chain, one should use bitcoin XT.

Welcome to bitcoin.

Sorry, you just walked into the middle of a family argument.

Usually we don't hate on newcomers as much as this thread is hating on you.

Knock it off people. If Coleio wants to download XT, he can do whatever he wants.

ok, i'll make it easy.

Need to know:
Back up. Do that first. Save the file to a thumb drive. Stick the thumb drive in a safe.
If you ever need to back up, install BitcoinQT, Core or XT and replace /Users/username/Library/Application Support/Bitcoin/wallet.dat with that file. (Ok this is the directory for mac. PC or Linux will be different.)
You only ever need to back up once, not every transaction. Just be sure to keep the back up safe.

Encrypt - yep, do that. Don't forget the password. Baaad if you forget it. Best thing to do is make a readme file on that backup thumb drive and write the password down on that readme.

To receive:
Click Receive and click Request Payment. A QR code pops up. Copy that, that's your receiving address.

To send:
Click send, Enter the correct address to send to, enter amount, double check the amount, triple check the amount, hit send. Enter password. Done.

All the other stuff you can learn as you go along.
Sign message is to write a message with a bitcoin signature, so people know it is you who wrote that message.
Verify is to verify someone's signed message, that they really signed it.
open URI - when you need to know about this, it's there.

No email address. No user name.

One last word: Your bitcoin will be ON THIS COMPUTER. Actually they are on the .dat file to be exact. So treat the computer accordingly. Don't download malware. Don't leave the computer running with no password. Don't let this freak you out, it's good that you have your bitcoin in your possession, just be aware of it and protect your stash.

And exactly this is one of  the reason, why we don't have more adoption.

I think he made a right choice, one wants to be sure on the longest chain, one should use bitcoin XT.

Why is that? It seems now that awareness has grown of some of the other proposals (BIP 100, 102, 103), interest in XT and BIP 101 is waning. Just look how the block size vote has turned in the past two days. 53% of mined blocks voted for BIP 100 in the last 24 hours. Thats > than default 1MB now. 8MB is now under 15% in the last 24 hours.

The more controversial the fork, the less likely we can achieve consensus easily. Those who value consensus will support a more conservative approach than XT/BIP 101.
