I attempted to replace the fan on my S5 with a 4-pin Corsair fan I had lying around.  However, when I power the miner up, the controller powers down the fan, and beeps after about a minute or so.  Are not all 4-pin fans create equal?  Is there a way to override this?

The miner will do this if you do not plug a fan in "Fan1", so make sure that if you only plug one fan, that you plug it in "Fan1", otherwise the miner will think there are no fan and the miner will shutdown to protect itself and then play an alarm.

I'm definitely plugging it into fan1. Maybe there is something wrong with my fan?

Maybe it does not return a fan speed signal? Can you plug it into another miner or device to see if its reporting properly? And if you replug the stock fan and it work, then its most likely the fan you're putting in.

Some 4 wire fans are not compatible. Do a search you'll find a post talking about it.

You could make it easy and just order direct from bitmain - https://bitmaintech.com/productDetail.htm?pid=00020160105104607947aoAkWsJK06D0

They are now selling fan's direct.  So no real guess work, as you can get one made for your model.

Thanks for the info about ordering fans.  I'm attempting to quiet the miner to make it more "wife friendly"  Smiley

You picked a miner that is not great on that sadly.  The S5 runs hot and loud.  You chances are can find a way to make it quieter, but I think it would take a lot to make it quiet.

With winter you might be able to use some cold from it to help allow less RPM's.   But kinda a short term fix on that.

The only way to do that is putting it somewhere she can't hear it. Possibly building a soundproof enclosure for it would work. You would need accoustic panels and make a box out of it that still allow air to move through freely, but not noise.

And by the time you put the time/effort to do a enclosure I think it's in most cases not worth it.  Others wanting one around the S5 efficiency but quieter I suggest going with Avalon 4.1 .

If noise is a issue and you can run a generation back the 4.1 is one of the quietest miners out there.  You can just underclock no need to switch fan's or make a enclosure this way.

I replaced the stock fan on my S5 with a pair of Noctua NF12 iPPC 3000rpm fans, in a push-pull configuration.  It is not silent by any means, but is way nicer than the stock fan and setting it with OC of 375M and 82% fan speed I get both temp readings under 60C (just!).

Try it, you might like it.  You don't have to set the fan speed manually, the S5 will spin the fans up and down as needed.  In fact, when you first turn it on the fans will not spin at all!  Don't panic, they will spin up shortly after boot...

Good luck!
Keep calm and mine on.

I don't believe in superstition because it's bad luck: 13thF1oor6CAwyzyxXPNnRvu3nhhYeqZdc
