Software patents are granted in a very small number of countries, if for some reason, someone were able to patent the block chain he would be able to extort businesses that rely on this technology in such countries.

The United States and all of Europe grant software patents.  Japan too.  Which countries are you thinking of that don't issue patents for software?

Good to know. I was reading some of the things he claimed lately and some comments says that he intends to actually patent the blockchain and for some reason if successful, he and the people behind him can control the use of blockchain.

Bitcoin was developed as open source since the start, it is fine to try to patent things never used before, but if you try patent anything Bitcoin already using you wont get the patent. As least this is how I understand the patent law. Thats why I dont think anybody should worry some patent might bring down legitimacy of Bitcoin or cryptocurrencies in general.

You can't permanently hold a patent on something that was invented by another person before you filed the patent. Since Wright isn't the original inventor of the blockchain (otherwise he would have shown proof) it doesn't matter what he claims. Since Bitcoin is widely distributed software, there is no doubt that it existed long before this imposter showed up.

Wright can only patent something that is his new, original idea. Most altcoins use very similar technology like Bitcoin, so even if he succeeds in pretending having a similar idea before their release, the impact will remain very limited.

I also think it will be quite difficult to enforce any patent claim, because in many cases it will be quite difficult to get hold of the developers behind a coin.

Bitcoin consists of a combination of ideas previously used that was not Satoshi's invention from the start.... So I would say, NO ...He might be able to patent one or two concepts, but not the whole thing. He will

spend many years in courts fighting patent claims and most of it is public domain. If I was Craig, I would stop wasting time and money on these patents and just enjoy life as a free individual. He would be the

most hated person, if it turns out that his patents succeeded and he cannot prove that he is Satoshi. ^hmmmm^

Well i dont think it can be patented to begin with. it already being used on large scale so its like an open technology right now.

7 years after Bitcoin was born some random dude appears and wants to patent the blockchain technology? No way. I don't think if he can do it after so many time.

By one side, the concept is cryptography, and you can't patent mathematics or algorithms.

By other side, the software itself was not made by Satoshi and was open source since the beginning, so there is no way to revert it no

So what exactly is Craig Wright's objective upon claiming all these?

If he can't take patent and bring down altcoins and own bitcoin itself then maybe Craig and the men behind him aims to identify the real Satoshi by luring to respond to his claims, possible?

Even if craig did manage to get a patent would it even matter that much? what could he possibly do? As it is bitcoin is decentralised so it would mean everyone would have to agree to run his version of bitcoin which is what version? this version or the last version before the fork? If he patanted and it was going to be a problem and for some reason he did get control off this version which i see as highly unlikely then we would just fork away again. If someone is going to gain full control of bitcoin then its now centralised which the real satoshi would not want and it would definitely be grounds for a fork.

if Craig Wright successfully claimed he is the real satoshi and had moved coins from satoshi's wallet to another wallet.
Can he then claim patent of blockchain? If yes, can he bring down the rest of the cryptocurencies?
Even in if that scammer managed to convince governments that he was Bitcoin's creator-- he couldn't patent it.  An inventor's own publication or public practice eventually becomes prior art that blocks the inventors own patents. That time limit has long since run out.

So what exactly is Craig Wright's objective upon claiming all these?
I assume that Wright is attempting to defraud investors who understand the patent system no better than you did before this thread-- people who think that he can patent Bitcoin, and thus has highly valuable patents.

Yes they can patent bitcoins and possibly bring down other cryptocurrencies. But if will go a patent then It will surrender itself to government laws, regulations and policies. Thats the reason I think Nakamoto Satoshi made bitcoin without any patent to make it a full decentralized currency. Decentralized from the government and decentralized from banks. Patenting bitcoin i against the reason why bitcoin is made.

The main challenge will be proving who satoshi is. There will be many fraudsters who will come running to claim their piece of cake if they come to know that blockchain technology is up for patent.

So I don't see any apparent reason for blockchain patent. However, if someone can bring down some useless alt coins, I would support that person for sure. The altcoins are the main reason why bitcoin price is not moving up faster. The investments are getting distributed within the alt coins and bitcoin market cap is not increasing the way it was expected.

I dont think that blockchain can bring down the altcoins,,Because as far I know Bitcoin is still prevailing and even blockchain will become patented it doesn't mean that's the alcoins will goes down, that a very shallow reason. Wink

if Craig Wright successfully claimed he is the real satoshi and had moved coins from satoshi's wallet to another wallet.

if Craig Wright could successfully prove that he is indeed satoshi then i would squirt chocolate milk out of my nipples.

Quote
Can he then claim patent of blockchain?

bitcoin was released under the terms of the MIT license. and this licensee is so permissive in reusing, changing and generally doing anything you like with the code.

Quote
If yes, can he bring down the rest of the cryptocurencies?

even if the above happened, the technology is out and anybody who had any coding experience can imitate it and create his own. so no you can't take them down.
