I want a dedicated ETC miner

Hello!

I am looking for a dedicated external hardware for ETC mining. By writing external I meant a device that I do not have to leave connected to my local computer to work ( excluding initial setup ) and does not use my computer's resources. For instance, it could have an own HDD or net connection to store data. I am looking for such a device because all my local computers are usually in use and I want to seperate ETC mining from my other jobs.

I have access to free energy and I am able to run the miner 24/7.

I have only two expectations and these expections are: the miner must not use up more than 2299 W and must have an expected price return within a fair amount of time.

What is your suggestion?

I will build a PC myself. I will search a build guide that supports six Radeon R9 390X cards. In order to build the PC, I will follow the build guide on BCT. And I can put my HDD into the PC or even have internet connection. I hope I got it right and I thank you for your suggestion!

I think I can do it as described now but since there are several build guides for different number of GPUs, where does the magical number six comes from? Also, what does make Radeon R9 390X make different ( the optimal for my purpose ) than other GPUs?

Build yourself a farm. Get a mobo with 4 PCI Express slots at least, some cheap CPU and RAM, a 80+ Gold rated PSU of 1000W at least. Buy risers on eBay or elsewhere. Find an old HDD you don't use any more. Purchase a few GPUs of the same model and manufacturer. Pick up a milk crate and assemble all this stuff into it. Install Linux or Windows, set up the miner of your choice and you're good to go.

no r9 390x are no better then r9 390

 R9 390 - NOT R9 390x - are low cost high hashrate.
 R9 290 can match them though, tend to be a little lower cost, but are harder to find.

 The only REAL difference between the 290 and the 390 is bios update - the actual GPU chip is THE SAME.
 (edit) and it appears that many or all R9 390s had somewhat faster memory
 Cooling varies with the specific model of card - both came in several versions from different manufacturers.


 The "x" models have more shader cores, but due to memory limitations they do NOT mine any faster on Ethereum, and they tend to draw a little more power when mining Ethereum than the non-x models (not a factor for you) *AND* they tend to run a bit hotter, AND they tend to cost more.

Alrigthy. So, entrant level CPU, RAM and HDD will be sufficient, but I will need a high quality, 80+ Gold rated PSU of 1000W or better.

As for the mobo, I will get a mobo with six card slots since is the biggest amount of slots I can find on one mobo ( that is where number six comes from ). First, I will try to fill the slots with R9 290 cards since they match R9 390 cards in powerful hashrate and have lower cost compared to R9 390s. If I cannot get six R9 290 cards, I can use R9 390s ( without the X ) and I am advised to totally drop the idea of buying R9 390X cards. However, I have a question here.

If I can get some R9 290 cards, but not six, can I use R9 290s and R9 390s? Like I put R9 290s into four slots and put R9 390s into two slots. Would that work well?

Also do I get that right I do not need a computer case if I have a big enough milk box and a riser?

Go for 3 or 4 cards and a high quality 1000W PSU. Those pro miners with 6-card rigs opt usually for two interconnected PSUs.

Go for 3 or 4 cards and a high quality 1000W PSU. Those pro miners with 6-card rigs opt usually for two interconnected PSUs.

Some truth to this idea.  A new miner should try two cards on that six card rig.

Get used to it then a third and fourth.

The big six card rigs can drive you crazy with stability rigs.

I have five two card rigs and a four card rig.

This week I will build a four card rig.

the first miners should usually be your gaming rig, when you can start wit two card then if you see a good profit and you are confortable you cna go with a rig full of gpu, like i did

 R9 290 and R9 390 should intermix without issues.

 For 5+ cards on ANY non-server-specific motherboard, you MUST use risers on at least some of the cards.
 There are a very few server-based motherboards designed to handle more than 4 dual-slot cards, but the COST of those motherboards isn't worth the price.

 Cases are definitely optional, as long as you have a way to get the cards mounted in such a way that the riser connections and power connections are solid, there is enough airflow to keep the cards cool, and they're mounted solidly enough to not shift around causing shorts.

I see I must get some riser anyway since I will use a non-server specific mobo and I do not really need a computer case. I will start with two cards first, which two cards either can be R9 290 or R9 390 and later with that experience I can put additional R9 290s / R9 390s in. I still will have to use a high quality PSU from the start.

Thank you for your advice! At the moment, I have no additional question left. Last night, I also have just reunited with a friend who also has experience in building custom PCs and he would help me. I will return with new experience and / or additional question if they occur.
