An overheating, smoking Samsung smartphone forced the evacuation of a Southwest Airlines jet that was preparing to take off Wednesday from the Louisville airport.

Nary a passenger or trained personnel were bright enough to stump on the phone and dump it into some water. Then, ask the passengers if everybody is comfortable so that the fight could continue.

I'd say that the entire plane was packed with drama queens seeking an excuse as to why they were late to the annual Drama Queen Convention.

While large-scale marketing efforts tout cost savings of compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs), few are explaining the real cost -- to the environment and to individuals -- of broken or discarded CFLs.

One consumer has learned that accidentally breaking a CFL could cost her more than $2,000. According to the newspaper Ellsworth American, Brandy Bridges of Prospect, Maine, has been given a conservative quote of $2,000 for toxic cleanup of one CFL broken in her home.

Bridges broke the CFL as she was installing it in her daughter's bedroom. Because Bridges knew that CFLs contain hazardous materials, she called Home Depot for advice on how to clean up the broken bulb. The store directed her to a Poison Control hotline, which advised her to call the Maine Department of Environmental Protection (DEP).

The DEP sent a specialist to Bridges' home who found that the mercury from one broken CFL created mercury levels in the child's bedroom that were greater than six times the state's "safe" level for mercury contamination. The specialist advised Bridges to engage an environmental cleanup firm; the firm gave her an estimate of $2,000 to clean up the broken CFL.

The child's bedroom has been sealed off while Bridges attempts to raise the money for cleanup. According to media reports, Bridges' homeowner's insurance refuses to cover the cleanup because mercury is a known hazardous material.

Celebrities, political candidates and retailers including Wal-Mart continue to promote CFLs as an economical and "green" alternative to other types of lighting. Even the EnergyStar division of the Environmental Protection Agency -- while admitting on its website that CFLs contain mercury -- stops short of calling a broken CFL "hazardous." Like most proponents of CFLs, EnergyStar fails to mention the long-term dangers to the environment and the short-term dangers to well-meaning consumers who accidentally break a compact fluorescent light bulb.

Here's an idea. If you break a light bulb in your home regardless the style, get a broom and dustpan and sweep it up and put it in the garbage. Carry the garbage to the curb on garbage day. Cost? Zero dollars.

Case in point, I once broke one of them mercury thingies and cleaned it up as described and nothing weird happened to me. Feel free to offer up a better example in case mine doesn't pass muster.

Seen this in the news too.. was thinking the same too.
i also noticed the thing was found stuffed in the seats..
A passenger said he found it.
Shit if that was me i would have tried to get the battery out and KEEP IT !
Like put it in a bag and ask for a glass of water and dump it in there etc.
Then later, Buy new battery and get free phone !

And.. not have to land the plane and stand around for ages.

I seen a story like 2 days ago where a guy muttered some threats on a CAN flight.
They landed and made the people stand on the tarmack for an hour or two then on a buss..
then interviewed them all.
It was suggested the guy said he had a bomb on the plane in his bag then made threats etc.
They fund nothing and arrested the guy.
Glad i was not on the flight !

And yeah i heard about how the bulbs are toxic etc.
I think i did break one and thought about it etc and i just aired it out a bit by opening a window.
Cleaned up the mess and carried on with life.. no hazmat suite or costly clean up charges

I would just rather clean the CFL and air out the room than ask people for two thousand dollars for a professional cleaning. Have the kid sleep in my room for a few days just to be on the safe side. LED light bulbs are going to take over anyway.

I instantly think back to pre 911 times when i took a plane flight in Canada from BC to Alberta back around 1997'ish and brought with me a ton of stuff including multiple knives including a real working switch-blade.
Now ? i'd be in cuff's.

I was stopped in the terminal and i am sure they could smell the half ounce of weed i had in my pocket..
They also seen my pipes and drug paraphernalia in my bag.
I had little tools etc for pipe cleaning and i was also sort of moving too so i brought all kinds of weird random house stuff that may be handy.

The women stopped me and opened my large bag that was jammed packed tight with tons of random shit and she took out like 1 item and had his look on her face like "oh fuck" ..this is gonna take me forever.
She put my knife back in my bag and said next time don't bring "tools" ...
She said they could be used to take the plane apart.

I have seen a bunch of stories in my town the last while where they mentioned "Clowns"
Apparently this has caused a lot of Police investigations and arrests and press releases.
Police said this is not allowed and they will arrest people..
What some guys have done is wander around town dressed like a clown.
One guy posted a picture of himself standing in front of a high school dressed like one..
with the caption.. "We are watching" ..he posted on Facebook.
He was arrested !

When the band ICP came to town we had jugalo's all over dressed like that too and no big arrests drama.
But i guess the clown thing is a serious crime.. even on OCT 1st  ..1 month from Halloween.
