Hi all,

I recently managed to get in on the Baikal Cube Quad order (yay) and am eagerly awaiting my cube-quad to hopefully be delivered in a few weeks.

One of the things I wanted to do is replace those 4x 120mm baikal stock fans with some quieter, more efficient fans (with bitchin UV LED's too.. makes the hashrate go faster).
I was planning on powering these fans directly from the PSU, since I've had my hands on a cube before and noticced the Baikal board uses a nonstandard 4 pin fan connector on the board that looks like a PMW connection.

Before I sink a bit of money getting some premium fans that will NOT be connected to the asic board, would anyone with a functioning baikal cube mind unplugging their fan (just for a second) and tell me if the miner auto-shuts down when it looses that PWM fan reading? Otherwise my fan mod my require some kind of crazy circuit to spoof a fan RPM reading :/

No need. I can't hear the fan at 50% and temp is around 40 degrees. So fans are not limiting factor. Info about how to change chip frequency is.

Thanks for the reply. Ive fired up a baikal cube in person though and it was too loud for where I'm limited to put it. And if one was loud, four of them will definitely be an issue noisewise.

hey guys

i've just got the baikal CUBE, powered it up, but after an hour or two, i was already thinking about changing the fan Smiley
luckily, i've had some fans from my earlier experiences with PCs, etc.. most of them the same dimensions, as the one used on CUBE

1 - first of all - you should use a fan, that has a 4 pin connector
2 - problem is, the connector of the original fan is most likely thinner than the ones used in PC fans.. so what i've done, was to remove a part of the connector (check the image)



.. you can see that there's a missing part of the white connector (on the CUBE board) so the wider fan connector (black) now fits..

i've powered the CUBE, expecting anything Smiley but.. everything works fine.. it's significantly quiter than the original fan, although to my ears - it's still a bit loud.. temps are roughly the same (40C - 41C)

i've used the fan from Gelid REV.2 TRANQUILLO cooler
will try also one from Acutake, and one from Noctua (NF-A9x14 PWM - this one is smaller, but it will be nice to see, if it's able to cool the CUBE.. but i doubt it)

i can post my findings, if anyone is interested..

it would be great to somehow overclock this beast - anyone had any luck with this?

I've been running my Cube for about a week with the fan set to 80%.

It isn't loud at all. I don't see the problem. Mine is currently at 48 degrees and 310mh/s. Ambient temp of the room is pretty high because there are also 2 GPU rigs mining in there and a baikal Mini close by.

It has a single 120mm fan and it isn't loud to me.

Maybe overclocking would be interesting but I personally wouldn't push it. Does the mining software on the pi board have any hardware clock control? You can get into the terminal so maybe you could add some flag to the miner to try overclocking that way, but it works fine so I would be only willing to try overclocking maybe 10%,

I started mining with 1 AMD 7950 and 1 R9-280X. Then I gradually built my AMD operation into 12 R9-290s. Awesome ETH hash but ridiculous power consumption and heat. Over the last year I defected to the Nvidia team. I now use GTX 1070s. They were expensive to buy (probably a bargain now) but awesome hash rate vs. power consumption. blah blah blah blah

newmz> yeah, it's relative.. for some people (like me) even a slight hum, or a slight fan noise is not acceptable.. BUT, i'm not going to have the miner in living room, or bedroom so it's ok as it is right now i think..
i've tried to lower the fan revs by changing the value for sgminer - right now at 65%, and the noise is almost at a level , where i can have it right next to me, and not be bothered by it...

well since i'm new to this, and have the miner for like half a day - and running for maybe like 3 hours, i don't know the possibilities of changing settings at the system level.. i have to look at this more closely
i've already tried the console, it's easily accessible, even the root account, so now it's just a matter of finding out what and where to modify it Wink

Thanks Klacik. I like you you easily modified that port!
Unfortunately I jumped the gun and ordered 4x 3pin/non-PWM fans that I was going to run off the PSU.
Just hope the chips only auto-shutdown if they exceed a temp threshold, and not if they dont detect a fan connected
