So, sorry for the noobish question but what is the point in buying some of the Avalon chips right now? If you are only getting the chips without a board what is the point? And if there is a board for them how do you actually get them mining?

Have you even looked around on the forum ? There are at least 10 options to make boards or even complete machines of those chips.
