My question is would having a GPU device in the mix be detrimental ?  Specifically, I'm using cgminer.

In other words, would having the GPU hashing alongside ASICs in the same instance of a miner (i.e. cgminer) have a negative effect on performance ?  Nevermind the issue of power consumption, and the fact that an average GPU would contribute very little to the aggregate of nearly any ASIC hashing power.  I'm purely interested in 'under the hood' operation, not practicality.

I wouldn't think so, but I'd love to hear from some more knowledgeable folks on what the effects would be.

It has absolutely no affect on performance in my experience. (Except as you said power consumption and heat from the GPUs)

You can even run two separate instances of cgminer, one to mine btc with whatever Asic hardware you're using and one to mine scrypt/ltc (or whatever alt coin) using your GPUs.

Works fine and is more efficient than running separate instances.

Here's mine running a GPU+FGPA+ASIC:

Welp, couldn't have asked for a more authoritative answer.  Thanks  Smiley
