There is an advantage to a merchant using both Bitcoin and Litecoin though, because when you accept Litecoin as well, you open yourself up for business from Litecoin users, instead of only Bitcoin users and visa versa.

"litecoin users" is just a small subset of "bitcoin users". Sadly.

I see your point, but you are perhaps forgetting that a bitcoin user might be poor in bitcoins but rich in litecoins (for example, if said user only had gpu mining equipment). In this case, a merchant allowing for litecoin payments wouldn't be adding a new user, per se, but existing users that couldn't pay in bitcoins could pay in litecoins.

Anyhow, I think the point is to be forward thinking. A small litecoin community could pop-up in a South African elementary school as some kind of class project that leaves all of the kids with a few litecoins -- if only one merchant in the world accepts litecoin payments, that merchant will reap the benefits of all of the new users that come from such random events. Adoption continues to grow for both bitcoin and litecoin... at some point I think accepting litecoins as payment will be obvious and matter of fact for most merchants.

Many hosting services already accept Litecoin:

Did not find one on webhostingtalk. My bad.
Anyway.
Lets say I am a regular online merchant willing to try out bitcoin as a payment method for my (virtual) goods.
Assume that ltc payment processor is ready and I find out somehow that there is an alternative payment method similar to bitcoin - litecoin.
Can you please convince me to use it instead of bitcoin.
In other words are there real advantages for me as a merchant of using litecoin instead of bitcoin ?

It's not an exclusive choice - using one dosn't mean you can't use the other. If the payment processor is taking care of everything the advantage for you as a merchant is an increased customer base increasing your revenues and your bottom line. This is win-win.

This statement makes no sense.

Linecoin users aren't a subset of bitcoin users. That's like saying Euro users are a subset of USD users. Not every Litecoin user uses Bitcoin.

Assuming that currently most Bitcoin or Litecoin users are miners too, there are at least 3000-4000 maybe even 5000 litecoin miners (from counts in litecoin pools) - how many bitcoin miners do you think are out there? I'd guess either close to or slightly higher than this and it's going to decrease over the next couple of months as ASICs push miners out. So the number of Litecoin users and Bitcoin users are probably not as different as you seem to think.

Good point. As ASICs become a reality, there will be perhaps more Litecoin miners than Bitcoin miners until ASICs are readily available and cheaper.

We're looking into it internally.

At this point, don't get too hopeful, but personally (while I don't hold any litecoins!) I think that anything we can do to advance any crypto-currency is a good thing.

This is going to take a while to decide on, but I'll keep you guys updated. Even if we decide not to accept LTC, I can think of a couple ways we can help the Litecoin merchant economy grow.

Cheers,
-Jon

Hey Jon,

Thanks for responding- it was somewhat of a surprise for me!

I will remain hopeful that perhaps one day, you guys may accept Litecoin or support it in some way.

All the best,

Ch

Please add Litecoin support. We'd love to use bitcoinstore.

Very nice to hear your considering it (not getting hopeful of course).  I know you're trying to hit a target to maintain Volume rates with vendors.  I can only assume LTC would augment the ability for you to meet these marks.

Love the store and what it's doing for the community along with yourself / team.  Great work!
