During his 15-minute speech, Garcetti promised to give Silicon Valley "a run for their bitcoin," a reference to the digital currency. He also said he would end runaway film production, and focus on the city's aerospace industry. He vowed to lower the city's business tax.

Was that a positive hat tip to bitcoin or a "we'll outdo you, Silicon Valley bitcoin firms"? No publicity is bad publicity, I guess?

Definitely positive. He basically just referred to bitcoins as "Money", can't see anything negative about that.

I think people in positions like his are hesitant to say something directly in support of bitcoin, so if they are supportive, then they kind of have to keep it a little vague so that they don't get attacked by all the people we're so used to being attacked by. Until of course it becomes mainstream, and then they'll say they were there all along...
