Has anyone used BitCoin on local server to interact with PHP?

I'm trying to follow the official instructions but can't seem to locate the file called "bitcoind"

I'm just looking for someone to confirm or refute that this file is not part of the mac build.

The MacOS version of bitcoin has only the GUI version. There's no bitcoind for MacOSX in the official builds.

It also works with the gui version, e.g. ./bitcoin -server
