Buying an ico is like buying a product online from a strore. We must like the product (mvp). Price (valuations)should not be too expensive. the brand (team) must have a credibility. and then you have to decide if the product will be delivered or not (realistic roadmap).

Follow icodrop site, they are good, also follow some good influencers most of them are on telegram, youtube, twitter. check their thoughts on ICO and also do your own background research, their thought are not always correct.

Reading the whitepaper is good but not all of us do this. It is recommended though. You can have a quick check of the ICO you wish to join at websites like icobench or icorating. There are critic reviews there.

The right project of investing usually is dependent upon what problem is it solving like the coins which are focusing on solving the energy crises since energy consumption is a big problem in today's market. WePower ico that presents great potential since it has an already developed need in the market ready to be fed.

The only means to know a good ICO is by first of all going through it white paper and studying the project to understand it services and how it intends to achieve it needed target and again trying to see how far the project term to go either it have future plan or just a short term plans.
