It seems like everything is a copy of something else.  What coins actually offer something different or unique that can contribute to their longevity?

XRP / Ripple

Ripple is designed to enable decentralized cross-currency payments and exchange between any currencies available.

A user holding only EUR, BTC, LTC, WDC, QRK, or even DOGE could pay a vendor that only accepts USD.

Instant transactions.

It even supports cash deposits.

XRP is a deflationary currency within the Ripple system that helps enable it all to function.

NXT is the most unique, legitimate crypto-currency currently.

Ripple is pretty different too.

95% of the coins people will talk about are just clones with a different flavor, or, just plain old shitcoins. Most coins are based on existing models.

Alright, not 100% legit. It has some skepticism and some negative stigma around it.

For the most part, it's whatever you want to believe about a coin; is what's making the coin successful.

I think Ripple XRP and TimeKoin are 2 completely different currencies.  TimeKoin based on time rather than hashing power and XRP is, well I find it kinda hard to explain really which could be a bit of a downfall for it but i'm currently 'mining' it via World Community Grid.  I run TimeKoin on the same PC as it uses almost no extra power.
