The following website gives you access to paid digital scientific libraries via some type of proxy mechanism. I would hate to take advantage of this wonderful site, only to be hit with a massive copyright lawsuit. Is it safe to just download to my heart's content?

http://www.jxplore.com/

If not, what would be the solution to safely downloading from the website? A VPN? Isn't a VPN where you're basically remotely controlling another computer sitting somewhere in, like, Africa? Can anyone recommend any VPNs?

Site doesn't work after the first load, I wonder if I just got spear phished.

In any case, assuming it's not a scam. If you want legal advice talk to a lawyer. If you want forum guesswork:  You have no clue what relationship this site has with the sources, they may have some bulk agreement. If there is copyright infringement, it's probably the sites infringement not yours.

Because academic authors and institutions are almost universally unpaid enforcement is complicated by the fact that the publishers are obviously parasites and don't make particularly charitable plaintiffs. If you're worried about someone harassing you for your use— use tor. Or find out what it takes to get papers access from a university library if one is available to you.

I actually already used it and was able to access a PDF on JSTOR (something that doesn't work unless you have a subscription). So I don't know what your issue is. As my first post indicates, I'm apprehensive about proceeding further until I get a second opinion.

I don't know the details behind the technology but it will depend on what the proxy actually is ( the technology ) and more importantly who is actually operating it.

I suggest https://www.anonine.com/. It's very safe and pretty cheap plus you can pay with BTC - I use this myself.

Turn off the news and read. Watch Psywar, learn something important about our society and PR, why and how it got started and how it brainwashes you.

With a SSH server + Socks package, the way it works is you SSH out to their SSH server on the internet. That creates an SSH tunnel which is secure and also very common application type so it should not raise suspicions.
You Then have all your applications such as a browser, IRC configured to use the socks proxy provided. The socks proxy connections all go inside the initial SSH tunnel. So if you are on IRC for instance, your Internet Provider would only see you have an SSH tunnel created and wouldn't be able to see you were on IRC.   This method is VERY easy to mess up if its not thought about thoroughly and can lead to parts of data leaking out of the wrong place.
It is a popular method when you are in a corporate or work environment and want access to a jumpbox or home network but only have HTTP Proxy access.

You do not want this server as Vod has pointed out. I would suggest the product and link he has given you.

Can anyone answer my last post.

Paying with Bitcoins is good if the company is large and not a basement operation
