I've been seeing people doing post like this post instead of deleting the post.
Is there any reason behind this?
And what are the consequences of deleting posts or comments?

Well  Roll Eyes Nothing really worth pondering in this regard  Cheesy It completely depends on people's interests, or it may also be related to their post history. Personally, I think using a dash is reasonable, because it is transparent in all your posts on this forum. Most posts using dashes are to participate in campaigns, right? Nothing special and nothing to worry about. Some guys just want to beautify their post history by deleting Grin

Strikethrough is used in many ways.
Some times to admit that you were wrong, scratch that phrase and come to a different conclusion, other times to be a dumb ass sarcastic.

I would assume strikethrough came from the typewriter era. Used to play around with one of those when I was younger. Those were the days...

Damn true! Write a normal title that contains sone info about the topic. It's a forum not a diary entry after all

I used the topic "Just Wondering" because. I've been wondering about the reasons why many just cancel posts instead of deleting them. and I don't want to be copying same thing blindly. I use to feel like it's the right way to say "I don't mean this" on this forum "
And topic edited
Thanks

Its used for a variety of reasons ranging from comedy, editing or remaining transparent when withdrawing a statement. There is no consequence of deleting your own posts if you so wish, however sometimes that can make threads appear to make no logical sense once a part of the discussion has been deleted. Therefore, take that into consideration when deleting your posts. We've all deleted posts, and its a quite common occurrence, and there's absolutely no consequences unless of course you're trying to hide something, and someone points that out. If you simply want to delete a post you've made a mistake on, then you could or alternatively edit it. You aren't required to use any of the strikethroughs or any other formatting discussed here.

Thanks for the detailed explanation. I think deleting posts which I don't like will be the best decision for me because I will also like to beautify my post history too.

So, if I may get you right, what you are trying to say is that the cancelling of words instead of deleting them is an old school version of deleting. Just like using a pen to write something and cancelling what you wrote with the pen.

I use it for fun in my more sarcastic posts, it enrages trolls it's a posting technique you could say.

I've also gone back to many posts to update either inaccurate or no longer current information where the majority of the post is still relevant. If none of it is relevant and/or I was talking out of my ass misinformed I will do the whole post and link to better or accurate information. I also just like leaving my past posts there for posterity whether good or stupid naive.

IRl I come across it a lot with Legal logbooks. If you make an error you place a single line through it and initial then fill in the proper information.

In the end people here just do as they please like Fucking Animals the individuals we are and use these tools/styles as they please.

I see it used in such situations where the initial content of the reply or post has been extensively discussed in that thread and quoted repeatedly. Deleting or editing such post may confuse someone reading it later on, a strike through on the other hand would give an idea of the original content which spurred discussion, it would be kind of awkward editing a post which has been replied to based on the actual topic of discussion (deleting topics is not allowed).
This is the practical use I can think of including maintaining transparency, at other times it's usually used for humour.

For me, the crossed-out text symbolizes what I would like to say on the forum, but for various reasons, I cannot use such an interpretation.
At the same time, the meaning of what was written remains the same.
This can be interpreted as thinking out loud, of course, assumes the presence of humor. And also removes responsibility from the author, as it would sound: "I didn't say that"   Smiley Smiley

The purpose of the text like this I said something to you, but you align it is not true, but I am still in doubt with what you say it is called 'Strikethrough feature'.

Means: to show you the same as erasing the text that I said to you, after you correct what I say for you.

Why crossing out text is not deleted because what I say for you has no effect on you, to see my words professionally most people do not delete text, just cross out.

In the future what I say is true, meaning that I immediately open (scribble).

Another example;
This often happens in campaign applications to make it easy to re-register in the future when there are open slots.

Strikethrough or cross-out is used from some reasons and purposes.

- Don't want to delete original contents. There are drama sometimes why did you edit your posts and erased original content.
- Want to discuss (agree or disagree) or give some more details after soneone ask for. Example. After I release this post, minutes later someone else ask me something, I can go back to this post, edit it and reply that answer.
- Some boards are not allowed people to delete post within 24 hours (Services and more). As a result of that, people have to strikethrough or cross-out original contents. They might or might not come back and delete that post later. If they remember, they will delete it, if not is is not bad and nothing is wrong.

I use the strikethrough option sometimes when part of my post contains wrong information. Sometimes if I notice it myself or if another member points it out to me, I will strike that part of the post. I don't like deleting my own posts because it looks like you are trying to hide something and with all the post scrappers around, it makes no sense to do it anyways.
