So, it's been 2 weeks or so. No more crashing / so the new firmware seems to have fixed it.
Still has the line. Anyone else seeing it?

-Dave

Good to know that the first situation seems to be addressed.

In regards to the line, can you please send the following payload to the device:
Code:
[
  {
    "type": "fill",
    "color": 1
  },
  {
    "type": "rectangle",
    "x": 0,
    "y": 0,
    "w": 296,
    "h": 128,
    "filled": 1,
    "color": 0
  }
]

The screen should turn all black and will be easier to check for "missing lines", not to be confused with the normal artefacts that caused by how ePaper displays work.

Yes, it's there, it looks like it's getting worse Sad
With the screen all black screen with my phone camera you can't see any of the missing pixels but you can see more missing here.
Unless it's May C9 2019.

I will pull the back off later and see if putting some pressure on the corner fixes it. I fixed a 1st gen kindle that way once.....

Thanks,
Dave

At the moment the device is still usb powered but some work has been done towards converting them into battery power.

The most time consuming actions would be some potential changes to the case layout in order to refit the battery charging port and on/off switch and rewiring the charging circuit to the external usb port.
Although time consuming these modifications can be made rather quickly if enough effort is put into it.

I have some spare time next week and I will actively work on it and keep you updated.

Progress can be followed here:

Hi Dave, great timing.

I have been in contact with the board manufacture and have received the new boards last week.
Planning on doing the necessary software/hardware changes over this weekend and will post some updates then.

How is your device going?

Fairly well.
For some reason every now and then it stops updating and I have to reboot it.
I *think* that when the router looses internet is when it happens, I have to actually test that to verify.

Did some testing:
If I pull the wan port cable from the router and plug it back in ~ 5 minutes later it's fine.
If I pull the wan port cable from the router and plug it back in ~ 30 minutes later it stops updating and never comes back.
If I pull the power from the router and wait a minute and plug it back it in may or may not start updating.
If I pull the power from the router and wait a good long time (20+ minutes)and plug it back in it seems to start updating.

Did not do "extensive" testing just 2 or 3 tests for each due to the time involved in some of the testing.

Thank you for testing this.

I have implemented the battery and there is only a few issues to solve and testing before the new device becomes available.
Along with the battery comes a major firmware update that incorporates a Status bar that provides more information of the device connectivity.
The connectivity is handled slightly differently with the new firmware but i'll make sure to test router outages in order to ensure that if something happens at least the user is informed.

One thing to note is that due to the battery requirements unfortunately the main board and the case need to be upgraded.
Maybe i'll come up with a retrofit package only available for legacy devices.

You can always have 2 product lines.
Sell the classic at a discount and the battery powered one for more.

I am also going to do some more router testing later this week. I was thinking about it the the one it is connecting to is an old one I keep in my office for the tech bench. That could be part of the issue.
Going to try the main office Wi-Fi, but I have to do that after hours. If I start bouncing it up and down during the work day it would be bad.

I lost my first PaperLedger, so I'm excited to either buy another one or gank the battery powered one.

I like gambling. Probably currently trying to figure out how to pay next month's rent.

Since the back end is still working as far as I can tell I would guess that at some point they figured out that there was no money to be made doing the hardware and went on to other projects. Or, like me figured "oh, this will take 'x' hours to do' and then found out that the 'x' amount was off by an large amount and dropped working on it.

As you said it's open source so anyone with the time can pick it up and run with it.

how much are you looking for it?

$60 shipped? Make a offer if you think it's too much.
I figured it's a bit less then you would pay if you bought the parts and had a local place 3D print the case (at least around here) local 3d printing prices all over the place.
If you have your own 3d printer it's a different story.

I got a PM from a new user yesterday asking about it, so to be fair I want to give them a day or 2 to get back to me.
