I'm not sure why but I did get the same error minutes ago. Then I tried again, and it worked just fine.

What he said is correct; anyone can generate an address and give it out since the addresses we provide are anonymous. It seems our colleague was right that this would become a loophole.

You also said that you added a referral program, but I can’t see any option to get a referral code. So, how can I get one?

A friendly advice, when you face technical issues or need to make some tweaks on your platform that require taking your website down, at least, make sure to inform your customers about it in advance, especially if it may take some time.
