Rich and the poor who spend the most on luxury?

@Pokapoka124, can you tell us if you are rich or poor and how you spend money in life? Do you represent the rich or the poor? How can you know that all the poor in the world are spendthrifts and the rich are savers? Is poverty a sin? Are all poor people greedy, evil, wasteful, and thoughtless of the future? What is the purpose of this thread when I see most people jumping in to mercilessly criticize the poor and pretend you are all rich?

I live in a third world country, with an estimated 87 million Nigerians living in poverty so I think I’m in a good position to have a conversation about this topic. I didn’t say poor people are evil, greedy, or thoughtless. My point is far from it. I only gave my opinion on the topic based on my personal experience with rich & poor people in my environment.

Can you answer my question, are you rich or poor based on your country's average GDP and how you spend your life? Do you spend thousands of dollars on expensive clothes when your income is only a few hundred dollars/month? Or are you wearing clothes that cost only a few dollars while your income is in the thousands of dollars per month?


I know, not just you but everyone here is giving opinions based on their life experiences, but why? Why don't we look at ourselves and see who we are in that picture instead of judging others? Why don't we take ourselves as an example, we don't judge ourselves, why do we only like to judge others?

Honestly, I have heard about the economic situation in your country and I think you are not a rich person (correct me if I am wrong), and I believe you are focused on building a better future by working hard and saving as much as possible to invest. So why do we speak ill of other poor people? How would you feel if someone judged you based solely on your looks?

Our society is very diverse and rich, there are all kinds of people and each person has a different personality, we should not judge them by their appearance.

Poor people actually do not accept the reality that they are poor people, so they try very hard to get attention and validation from other people, while rich people no longer need validation that makes them look rich. There is even a survey that shows that poor people buy more new cell phones than rich people and this fact is undeniable.

That is clearly true and I have also found something like that in the survey in my living environment where poor people always prefer to replace their smartphones so that people around them think they are rich, even though they have cut their own food rations just to be able to buy luxury goods even though they are not useful enough for themselves. While people who are considered rich will always be more satisfied with what they already have and will continue to use it as long as its usefulness is still very appropriate and can still help them in their work.

It depends on the perception that people have, and I think it doesn't matter if you are rich or poor, there are things that are not luxuries, the basic things, like dressing, having a good house and living well, I know some friends who are well off, you could say they are rich, but they dress like beggars, and whenever they go shopping they buy the cheapest and end up in a unique state of meanness, then why have money if they are like that? I don't see the point , so sometimes luxuries for one are a necessity for others, living well is not and will never be a luxury.

There is no way he can spend on luxury, he or she can only get whatever by going for the list cos they can't avoid high grade of luxury or borrow from friends, relatives, neighbours and church members or even steal to fill among. When one is poor you are poor and gets poorer if you don't do the right thing not to talk about making yourself available for a race with the rich. 
The poor goes for luxury only on rare cases for instance, a must occasion they needed to attend but the rich can't hide it,  in their skin colours you will know that he or she is spending in it, their day to day lives are on expensive luxuries but the poor appears on luxuries once in a year.

When I saw this your coment it caught my attention and I laughed because I was thinking exactly thesame thing as well, on how everyone will keep on blaming the poor of their attitude of extravagant spending as if they are all rich people. Now the question is who is a poor person among everyone here? Because from my end I think people don't admit that they are poor or have such character but keep on blaming the poor and exempting themselves from the poor. Lolz it's quit funny. But the truth be told, it's hard for people to admit to their fault but keep on blaming other. Almost %80 of the world population of the poor leave a fake life. who knows if I am among the %80

What the poor earn they spend on their lifestyle. Instead of spending what the rich earn on their lifestyles, they spend it on How to Sign in Life Business Studies. I will not assume all poor people are like that because basically rich people who currently prioritize their career paths over lifestyle were also poor in their past. So you also have to see some poor people who are smart in using their money because not all poor people are only interested in showing off their lifestyle in this world. Because I have also found poor people who are smart and prioritize their money to build a career rather than using it to elevate their lifestyle in a moment.

So we can conclude that it always depends on themselves when they want to use money because on the one hand I have also found rich people who are not wise in using their money. So we can't judge things like that from just one side, but we also need to see from many sides so that we can find something more appropriate to make an assessment of the rich and also the poor even though most of the poor people do care more about lifestyle. Likewise with rich people who generally also care more about their careers because they are considered rich by many people without having to show something luxurious in their lives.

As I was scrolling through my Facebook I saw this photo and how the image discribes the poor to be a kind of people that wears expensive thing to impress people to look like the rich, and the other way round, the rich appears to be simple probably not to be noticed as a rich person. My question now is that,

Does wearing of expensive cloths, shoes and other expensive things a sign of being poor? Or does it mean the rich doesn't wear expensive things or doesn't leave a luxurious lifestyle?

In today's era, there is such a fashion that whether a rich or a poor fashion style, there is no way to understand their financial status from the outside. Most of the tiktok actors are constantly changing new styles of fashion and you can never tell if they are rich or poor by looking at their fashion. But fashion or stylish is the preference of a man whether he is rich or poor.  I don't think rich or poor will change their lifestyle according to what they can afford.  I never notice the difference between rich and poor here. But fashion is different for those who are vagabonds and don't care about family, but those who are responsible and care enough about career, they don't care about fashion, they give more importance to their career.

However, I have seen many folks that don't have money but they always buy designers wears anytime they have money. Although I have always believed that everyone does what they feels is best for them, and we don't even need to interfere on their matters because they are human and they already know what they want. Moreover, those average salary easners that mostly buy luxury things only think of the present things and not the future.

Basically, what is considered a luxury for the poor is considered normal for the rich, so most of us will never see rich people using things that they consider normal. Rich people spend more than we think, they don't save like we do. If they really don't have time to spend money and don't care about their appearance or don't care about their quality of life. So why do they own yachts, private helicopters, have their own designers, have their own chefs...is this considered a simple life?

However I am just saying based on my observation, but I didn't say that rich people doesn't spend on luxury things, I only said that rich people spend occasionally.

The truth is that if you see someone that's rich you would know.
Well, based on the folks I see around me, a lot of them are average salary earners and most of them like luxury things, so they spend money on them. The question I suggest you would have asked me is, how much do I consider an average amount.

We can calculate whether their expenses are comparable to what they get, because what I see is that some rich people buy luxury goods and they will also make it a business. For example, when they buy a luxury car, but then someone is interested in the luxury car at a higher price they will sell it, without realizing that some of them are running this strategy. They can even get 2 benefits at once, the first will be considered cool, and the second will get financial benefits. While poor people, even though they try to look luxurious, usually what they spend is not comparable to what they get. And also the goods that are considered "luxury" that they have will not mean anything in the future, unlike the "luxury" goods owned by rich people.

This is very common in various regions, although not all, but most of them are like that. Many people buy something because it is not a need but because of style to look rich in the eyes of others, even though if we don't feel the need, we shouldn't buy it. This is actually not just a matter of looking rich but they fail to manage their finances, so it's no wonder that poor people will remain poor if they have this mindset.

Of course there are also rich people who look rich by buying luxury goods but they already have financial freedom and can manage their finances well. In addition, there are also rich people who are tired of the ability to get everything they want in life so easily, at one point they want to find simple things that can make them happy.

Not only you, I also often meet people whose finances are tight but drive luxuriously, dress luxuriously, buy smartphones with the highest type to look rich and travel for fun but when there is an urgent need that must have reserve funds, they borrow money from others. This happens very often, so what OP said often happens, poor people often look luxurious than rich people who want to look simple.

If you are an average person, do you spend more money than your income to own expensive, luxurious things like what you are saying to other average people?
What I see around me is rich people spending a lot of money on luxury things because as I said, what poor people consider luxury is just normal things in the eyes of rich people. I rarely see middle class or poor people regularly spending money on things beyond their means, if any then it is only teenage boys who are spoiled by their parents. As for people who have families or are adults, they never do such stupid things.

Of course, rich people focus on making money but that doesn't mean they don't enjoy life or don't spend. If you ask any rich person about their purpose of getting rich, they will tell you that they want to have a prosperous, luxurious life...or simply put, to enjoy life. So I disagree with any idea that rich people are only interested in getting rich and not spending, especially on luxuries.

So this is the explanation if you look at the picture.
Why do rich people look simpler and more natural? Because they feel confident with the wealth they have so that other people still respect them without them having to show off or buy luxury goods.

While poor people, it is clear that most likely no one respects them and even tend to be indifferent as if they do not consider themselves to exist, that is why poor people tend to try hard to buy and wear luxury goods in any way so that they get attention and can be respected by others.

I see this in everyday life in my neighborhood, there are so many poor people who want to look rich and rich people actually look poor, meaning they want to look simple.

But whatever it is, it all depends on each person's perspective in seeing it, there are also people who have a mediocre income but want to look rich because of work demands. But what is certain is that if you want to achieve financial freedom in old age, be smart in managing your finances, don't buy something that is not really needed.

Forget it when you talk about luxury most especially in the context of the image posted, you have to first of all mentioned what the career of both the rich dude and the so called poor dude is, and why they both dress the way they did, the poor guy dress like a musician who knows he may be an entertainer, so and the rich guy could be a doctor, so both have different way and style of life.

So let not judge by how they dress without checking why the take such style of dressing, musician spends chunks of money on dressing, even the upcoming musician must dress expensive regardless of how much money he has.

In my own opinion,it depends on how either if them sees luxury, describes luxury and defines luxury.S lot of times, it's not everybody that likes to flaunt their achievements and thats why and how you should try to describe luxury.
People are different,with different perspectives and it's not everybody that has it all regardless of how and what they refer luxury as.
Apparently,what the rich sees as luxury doesn't really correspond to what the poor and average people see as luxury,many times,a lot of things that we consider luxury are obviously not what determines or validates luxury.

Every one has a definition of what luxury actual mean to them, the "poor" from the picture you sent obviously see dressing as a way to showcase luxury to him, but the "rich" might have a different area he expresses his own display, might be houses, cars etc, you can't place a particular standard to luxury.
That poor guy night not even be coming from a decent home, he has dressing might have dressing as a priority, can still be a misplaced priority from his end which can contribute to why he is poor.

Also, do rich people really wear t-shirts that only cost $40-50? Some people say that Mark Zuckerberg, Elon or Gate wear cheap shirts but is that true? I agree that the clothes they wear look very simple but that doesn't mean they are cheap as we think.

Here, some rich people often wear cheap t-shirts. But it is not as cheap as the t-shirts of poor people. 
Mark Zuckerberg, Elon or Gate should be an exceptional. They are top people in the world, they have their own standards when it comes to dressing. Even they wear simple t-shirts, surely it won't be as cheap as we think.

In my country, poor people even have to ask other people for old clothes to wear. They don't even want to spend $2-5 on a new shirt, so how can they have thousands of dollars to buy clothes? I'm really surprised that people take an unsourced photo provided by the OP, and start insulting poor people and claiming that poor people are wasteful.

It also happens in my country. It is something usual for poor people. This is just a true story that showed the fact about their capability of their financial. Since they only can do it, how can they buy the clothes valued thousands of dollars. I think you feel the same as me, it is something impossible to happen to poor people. The OP photo, totally doesn't reflect the reality!
