Gambling and Betting. Why the Distinction?

I was today years old when I found out that if betting and gambling isn't exactly the same thing. If you Google the word betting most of the  results will be in regards to sports betting. Also Google the word gambling and you will see most results refer to casino games. In my own opinion whether we bet on the outcome of a sports event or we bet on games of luck and skill in the casino, they are both the same thing. Which is why I wonder why there is this distinction between the two? Why can't we say casino betting just as we say sports betting or sports gambling just as we refer to the casino when we talk about gambling? I know it sounds weird saying casino betting or sports gambling but what do you think about this?

that is contradiction and it is definition that both of them have the same or similar meaning so what I'm trying to let you know is that bet is total name that you can use in gambling but when you said betting not means it neither be sportybet, so that is why we need to understand that if we are making use of Google definition we will contradict everything but when you mention betting and the gambling we understand exactly what is your point of view but English dictionary can make you to not all think that both of them is saying different thing but it is a general name for it before now, before now what we call gambling is soccer game prediction especially World Cup kind of game so we call it gambling or you bet on any of preferable or choice of country to win but I don't know why Google and the English dictionary we have another meaning or another definition of them

I think they are synonymous for all practical purposes, some specifics in the semantics might exist but that does not matter to the gamblers does it?

Some people take gambling in a negative sense while betting in a more general term to any type of luck/chance based event and something valuable is being staked in it.

I dont think betting only means sports betting, it is essentially all types of games, maybe that use is specific to some communities.

Maybe skill-based games are similar with trading. However, we can't fully state the luck has no role there. Luck probably still has a role, but it won't be significant. The most crucial thing is skills, it will determine everything.

Gambling in general terms has to do with luck Based games which are casinos, these games have no strategies or patterns that work they are strictly based on luck but betting on the other hand has to do with skill based games which is sports betting, this is quite different because the risks involved is quite low and analysis can help mitigate losses unlike skilled based games. Both terms are similar but to a lot of people they are used differently.

It's all the same thing in my opinion. When you gamble, you put your money at risk in hopes of winning something bigger. And when bet your money, you expect winning your bet, right? As for the odds, they can be over 1,000x in both cases, so, there's no way of distinguishing "gambling" from "betting". I used to think that winning with 100x+ multiplier is much harder in sports betting than in slots or dice, but I was wrong.

Yeah but it's just that the other is more preferred or famous, so people are used to it and just stick to it. There are gamblers that are like that who thinks they are risking their money in hopes of winning something bigger but there are also gamblers who thinks the money they put in is only like a fee or a rent for them to use the casino or to play the games inside it.

Just like in a carnival or amusement centres, we can also gain a reward if we are lucky of hitting something. It's a win-win situation if only we will play like this.

Even if we are only playing for fun, I think yes that we still expect for a win. It is just that when we lose, it is only easy for us to accept it but it might also has to do with the money involved because usually when we decide to play for fun, we are only using a small amount.

When it comes to odds, the first thing that came into my mind which has a high odds, is the casino but then there is also this parlay in sports which allows player to boost their odds but only at the cost of reducing their winning rates. In casino, there are still games which only has a minimal odds. In terms of winning, I think what makes winning a high multiplier hard in sports, is if we include an analysis but casino games are just a click of a button.

Gambling is the same as betting in as much as we are betting with money. This is why we keep seeing many gamblers always active to make more money for themselves. Gambling is all about money and how we can make more by playing games or making a pledge with our funds that the team we have chosen is going to come out as winner. I don't know why some of you guys are not getting a simple thing. Everyone knows that when you make a bet, whether it's in a gambling game, a sports event, an election, or anything in general, you are basically gambling because the term gambling is what we use when we stake something valuable to win something with it, but there is a distinct difference between gambling and betting when they are used in general when we are either speaking or writing, and the difference is that gambling is used to refer to playing gambling games such as roulette, dice, slots, etc. And when someone says betting, they are generally referring to sports betting, and making bets on specific events.

It's such a simple thing to understand, there isn't any need for any analogy or anything, it's as simple as that. I don't say that you can't called sports betting gambling because it is gambling of a sort, but when I say I do betting, it means I'm referring to sports betting in general and if I want to say I play games with money, I would say I gamble.

I get your point, dude; it's just that the ending said it still came out in the end that they are still the same gamble. As you say, it's simple: once you bet, it means you have gambled or gambled money on what you believe you will succeed in your bet as a gambler.

Yes, I agree with you, actually there is a clear difference between casino games and sports betting.
Every game in casino is completely random and impossible to predict, casino is like a dice roll, once you roll the dice the outcome depends entirely on luck.

But in the case of sports betting, through proper analysis and research of past and current condition and performances of teams, there is an opportunity to reduce risk. As a result, our chances of winning increase slightly.

However, risk management is important in both cases.

As they are the same, I don't understand why some gamblers wanted to separate the sportsbetting from gambling itself? Betting is indeed does not totally rely on luck but also there's good chance of winning the bet if the gambler knows the sports very well.

What you said is very correct. Slot, spin and crash games are much more harder than betting or sports games.  It if we look at it from the general point of view, gambling is like the general name betting also another general name and gambling and betting look like synonyms then the games we gamble on and the sports we bet on are the specific names.

So the distinction is not that much but all depends on the content one uses the term. And the way the terms are used determine the meaning.

Well to me i still don't see any much difference in them since both are all luck based game and when it dispute the gambling theorem them we can have them being classified separately. In sport betting after having all games selected, there odds are being multiplied by the total amount staked to give a potential winning and these depends on luck for someone to win.

With this differentiation then they aren't the same and when you browse about the two you'll see the difference between betting and gambling. What has confused people is that the two are being used in place of eachother without people knowing the real difference. Betting should be used use when the outcome depends on the players and your knowledge about the games being played while gambling are for games that the outcomes aren't predetermined by anything. When gambling all you have to depend on is to be lucky. To put it in another perspectives, for betting you can depend on your skills, you can train yourself and become a professional but for gambling, you don't need to stress yourself doing any work but all you have to do is know how to play and wait on fate to play in your favour.

@OP, Everyone have already mentioned the different points and has given different reasons why they are both different. Most of the time, I refer to both of them as gambling, it's only in some situations and when I want to be more specific about the kind, that's when I become more specific. The reality is that, betting is for sports activities and events, that's why players are referred to as bettors but gambling is for casino games which rely specifically on luck and winning is based on random approach and not like sports that is based on how the teams performed.

I would not use the term "hard" - it seems to imply that if you practice it more it can be won, which is wrong, the more you play the more you lose. These are EV- games, completely based on luck. You win or lose does not matter on how many times you play it or how strategically you play it. You will lose that game in the long term.

What is the point of separating these concepts? Gambling is everything that has to do with a casino, it does not matter if it is slots, roulette, poker or betting. If you are putting your money into something with very high risk, it is already gambling. It does not matter how you divide or classify it. If you are risking and losing, it is all gambling. The only difference might be for people who are into specific types of games. For example, if you are just a bettor, you might separate these things. But for the average person, gambling is everything connected to a casino.

Casino games and sports bet are all gambling because you are risking your money for a chance to win bigger amounts. Giving them different names is to differentiate gambling on sports activities from the ones that are played in a casino or game house. Most casino games like slot are purely luck based while sports bet are not entirely luck based, a gambler can analyze recent performances to increase chances of winning before gambling. You can choose to change the name to however it suits you but the fact remains that sports games don't happen inside a casino but casino games happen inside a casino.
