Still on the Bitcoin Pizza day symbolic day we have 4 days left to the main day. Bitcoin Pizza Day is officially celebrated annually on May 22
Sad to know that the people he bought the pizza from did not hold on to the Bitcoin. Instead, the coins were likely exchanged or spent shortly after the transaction was made.

People thought he spent 10000 bitcoins for 2 pizzas but in fact he spent more than 10000 bitcoins and purchased more than 2 pizzas.
I think the point is, the first transaction he made is BTC10k for 2 pizzas. That very first transaction he made, buying pizza using bitcoin, is the most important part of "Bitcoin Pizza Day". It is also most likely the reason why people say or think Laszlo spent 10k bitcoin.

No, you can't blame them for not holding the Bitcoin as they didn't know what the future brings, and most of us here as well who might have known Bitcoin before but didn't invest because we think it's a scam.

But what's important is that Laszlo did something that really help boost Bitcoin's image in the early days.

Doesn't matter if it is 4000 or 10000. He was one of the pioneers and so with that, every year we celebrate that day in honor of the man. He even did replicate this with LN if I remember it correctly. So we should be thanking Laszlo Hanyecz for what he did.

Laszlo might have bought other things with bitcoin (pizzas) inclusive. But for record purposes, it is good that we stick with what is known and official than speculate. There is a clear reference in the forum when Laszlo announced he wanted a pizza, who was interested and a feedback message that the pizza was delivered and also a Blockchain record for it.
Even Laszlo himself during interviews never mentioned 40,000 BTC.

Imagine what he feels whenever bitcoin pizza day is mentioned! At least I hope he is rich now other than not having thousands of bitcoins. This should be recorded on the book of guinness, bitcoin should be recorded there as well, where in the world can you pay 10,000 units of something for 30$ pizza and after 13 years you could still buy a pizza for 30$ but those 10,000 units worth more than $250 M.🤑
40,000 BTC, not 10,000 BTC. Massive regret.
No regrets mate.
Laszlo said he has no regrets till date. Even if he didn't buy pizza with the BTC, there was no way he would have saved them till today.

I just guessed, at the beginning he must have regretted it, because humans must have regrets, especially after seeing Bitcoin currently becoming one of the legends in the Cryptocurrency world, even with a very fantastic price. But slowly he will definitely not regret it because he is the one who commemorates Bitcoin Pizza Day, and right this month we will commemorate that day on this forum Bitcoin Pizza Day Contest and this has become a habit every May.

On the one hand, maybe he slowly doesn't want to regret it anymore because like you said. He bought it using bitcoin because at that time bitcoin was not valuable, even because buying pizza with bitcoin was the first transaction if I'm not mistaken in buying and selling, maybe if he didn't buy pizza using bitcoin, bitcoin wouldn't be like it is now. So actually he didn't lose anything, besides that bitcoin at that time had no guarantee at all. Bitcoin was still very small at that time and could fail, maybe if we were in his position at that time we would do the same thing.

Laszlo has been interviewed many times about whether or not he regrets buying 2 Pizza with 10,000 BTC, he said he does not regret his decision. The answer makes perfect sense to me because no one ever knows what will happen in the future. Logically, at that time he never knew Bitcoin would become the number 1 crypto in the world with the highest market capitalization.

Another reason why he has no regrets is because Bitcoin miners were relatively efficient at the time, so he could easily generate more Bitcoins. Regardless of his feelings after learning the current value of Bitcoin, his story is one of the important moments in Bitcoin history and an important lesson for all of us to be more careful in making decisions and appreciate technological innovations that may change fate in the future.

Here's a cointelegraph interview with Laszlo about his feelings after paying 10,000 BTC for two pizza.

Laszlo had either invented or innovated on some abilities to greatly increase his mining power by implementing GPU rather than CPU mining, and so at that time, his mining equipment was winning a disproportionate quantity of the bitcoin mined blocks, and so if he found 200 blocks, then he would be rewarded 10k bitcoin (50 BTC per block), and 144 blocks are mined per day, so Laszlo could have had found 200 blocks in a couple of days or maybe within a week of mining.  So the rumor that Lazlo may have bought pizza several times for 10k bitcoin each time, is not unreasonable that he might have had ended up spending 40k bitcoin or perhaps even more for various pizza transactions since it seems that he had several transactions in which he bought pizzas..

It probably doesn’t matter anymore how much exactly Laszlo spent to buy those pizzas using bitcoin. The important thing is that it wasn’t just two pizzas and he actually spent more than 10,000 BTC on various purchases not just pizza to regret of. What I think is more interesting to talk about now are the what ifs. Like what if Laszlo never made that transactions? Would it have affected bitcoin’s price or development in the future? I believe it would have changed how bitcoin was adopted and distributed because something changed. Right?

What matters of the story is that someone believed it was possible to buy pizza with bitcoin back then. So what if no one believed him or accepted his offer at that time? Would bitcoin still exist the way it does today? This is the kind of discussion I want to read more of.

You must like to live in fantasylandia.

When it comes to the past, I personally prefer to analyze what happened and try to figure out what happened and to get a good reading on what happened perhaps why it happened, and there can even be various versions in regards to what happened, what is the significance of what happened, where we are right now..which is based on how we got here, and how we got here might also help to inform us where we might be going.

When it comes to the future, we can have a large number of possible scenarios about various scenarios that might be possible, and some of the scenarios have higher probabilities than others, and perhaps we might have 9 or more scenarios with varying odds that might range between 37% for the higher end and 0.5% for the lower end, and so then maybe the higher end scenarios would be what we expect to be most likely to happen, even though historically sometimes lower end scenarios end up playing out and then once they play out, they affect the future possibilities based on what actually happened rather than what might have had happened, and sure yet they happen, they are somewhat locked in, even though we still might argue about what exactly happened and try to understand its significance.

There could be some ways in which exploring alternative historical perspectives that we might be able to gain a better perspective in regards to where we are at and where we might be going, even though I still tend to not get too excited regarding the discussion of hypotheticals that did not end up happening, since the are likely less relevant in terms of figuring out where we are at, how we got here and where we might be going.

Sometimes we might agree on a lot of the facts of where we are at and how we got here, yet we might have differing perspectives and opinions in regards to where we might be going - which surely investing in bitcoin can have some of these differing scenario elements, and we might not even need to be correct about the specifics of where we are going as long as we get it right directionally, and so for example, we likely are better off to invest into bitcoin rather than not to invest into bitcoin, even though it may well be that 99% of the world's population is either not at all invested in bitcoin or they are way under invested into bitcoin.

It must be admitted that Laszlo played a significant role in changing the future of Bitcoin to what it is today, in addition to being a major player in fixing many vulnerabilities in the early stages of the Bitcoin network, he was also the first developer to release Bitcoin code for Mac OS. He continues to demonstrate his genius in Bitcoin technology by changing the mining landscape. Yes, before the advent of integrated chips (ASIC), at that time Bitcoin was mined using CPU. He then managed to develop a mining code transition that allowed miners to mine Bitcoins that previously used CPU to switch to GPU.

Satoshi had time to establish communication with him, he assumed GPU mining was too advanced for Bitcoin at the time, so it was no surprise that he managed to find 200 blocks or more in mining. The 10k bitcoin reward he received for mining (50 BTC per block) allowed him to do whatever he wanted, 10,000 Bitcoins for 2 Pizzas was recorded as his first transaction, perhaps by then he had spent even more Bitcoins to order his favorite food.

...But what's important is that Laszlo did something that really help boost Bitcoin's image in the early days...

Few people know the history of bitcoin's creation, but even those who have never bought bitcoin themselves know that Laszlo bought 2 pizzas for 10000 BTC. And the fact that he has gone down in history forever is confirmed by the fact that every year a holiday is celebrated, which he initiated with his purchase.

Nobody know at beginning but if they are ready for learning, they can learn about Bitcoin, from its history to technology and current status of adoption and more.

If they want to read and learn Bitcoin history, this book which is available on Amazon and a free access readable file can help them.

The Bitcoin history book.

There are several days till a celebration of Bitcoin Pizza Day and it's good time for sharing some information that many people are not aware about Laszlo Hanyecz and his actions of purchasing pizzas with bitcoins.

People thought he spent 10000 bitcoins for 2 pizzas but in fact he spent more than 10000 bitcoins and purchased more than 2 pizzas.

It doesnt matter whether 10k or 40k, on which the main thing on here that he's the one do make out that first real world transaction on which this is indeed that could be put up on history. Its understandable that there are tons of people who do make out some computation on how much it is worth now with the current price specially on the new ATH on which its on $1B as far as i remember or seen recently. For sure Laszlo do make out that regret for the rest of his life but actually it could be patched up that he would be just simply thinking that he did make a history that isnt something that could be forgotten. Its none of our business on how much he had spent, if ever that he had 40k on that time then for sure he had still some coins on his wallet up to now that its not been known in the public. Right?

It's an historical event in the entire crypto space because it's like a celebration of Bitcoin being used as a transaction means which marks something special as it would later pave way for more people to believe and use Bitcoin for transaction and now it's being celebrated even after so many years past, it just shows how important and far Bitcoin have gone since it's creation.

Self-Custody is a right. Say no to "non-custodial"

Its none of our business on how much he had spent, if ever that he had 40k on that time then for sure he had still some coins on his wallet up to now that its not been known in the public. Right?

I would think that many of the earliest of bitcoin adopters who were either mining or even if they were purchasing (or exchanging) what seems to be a lot of bitcoin, such as thousands of BTC for relatively small dollar values (or dollar value items), then we should imagine that many of those earliest of adopters would have had enough foresight to have had hung onto at least a few hundred coins - yet surely we have many examples of  many earlier adopters who sold way too many BTC too soon, so we know that such sales of too many coins too soon does end up happening with some people.  It is like they cannot help themselves to want to consume.

It's really difficult to know Laszlo's holding back of some coins based on the information that we know about him, and surely folks like to consider that he has regrets, yet even if he held back several hundred coins and then just spent those slowly over the years, it would be difficult to consider that he would necessarily have had put himself into a position of spending too many bitcoin too soon.

It is a bit ridiculous to look at the 10k bitcoin and proclaim that today they would be worth more than $1 billion, since even though that is true, guys do not necessarily need to become billionaires in order to be quite content with their standard of living.  Many of us may well realize that currently having at least 16.857 BTC is enough to figure out ways to have a sustainable (and perpetual) income of $80k per year, even accounting for giving oneself a 5% to 10% raise each year... so the difference between 10,000 bitcoin and 16.857 BTC is quite a lot, and there surely could have been and should have been that many of the earliest of adopters had figured out ways not to sell too many of their coins too soon.

1) Self-Custody is a right.  Resist being labelled as: "non-custodial" or "un-hosted."  2) ESG, KYC & AML are attack-vectors on Bitcoin to be avoided or minimized.  3) How much alt (shit)coin diversification is necessary? if you are into Bitcoin, then 0%......if you cannot control your gambling, then perhaps limit your alt(shit)coin exposure to less than 10% of your bitcoin size...Put BTC here: bc1q49wt0ddnj07wzzp6z7affw9ven7fztyhevqu9k
