I can say that some people do not even have a reason to gamble except that their friends or colleagues do so and they just have to fit in, and that's why they gamble.
Any reasons at all boils down to the emotional condition the gambler is in and am sure that the amount to bet with also varies based on this because playing to win or playing for the fun of it would require certain amount limit of commitment that is dependent on that reason.

I think there is no set pattern and it varies quite a bit even for the same player from one week to other week.
Like me... sometimes I play just to relax... I make some basic bets on football, very low ones, offline and a few days later I check the result.
