I want to upgrade my Bitcoin client from 0.5.1 to 0.5.2. Do I need to uninstall 0.5.1 first or should I just install 0.5.2 on top of 0.5.1?

You can't win if you don't play. But you can't play if you lose all your chips. First I found bitcoin (BTC). Then I found something better, Monero (XMR). See GetMonero.org

Whatever you do, be sure to backup your wallet file to a safe place.

Using Ubuntu is so easy... Just run:

aptitude update
aptitude upgrade

Or start "Update Manager GUI" interface and upgrade your system, a new Bitcoin will arrive.

Always backup your wallet.dat.

Grue has a valid question, and your answer is both pointless and unhelpful.

Simple answer: Yes. You install 0.5.2 as an upgrade, just make sure you close Bitcoin first, and back up your wallet.dat in %appdata%\Bitcoin on windows, or ~/.bitcoin on linux.
