To those who are saying I wasted water:
I own my own water well, I did the icebucketchallenge while standing right over the well. As you are aware, the water cycle would dictate that this water, which came from this part of the ground, will return to this part of the ground and as such is not wasted. Any little bit that would have evaporated would have been negligible as the humidity was near 100%.

I would love to help kids in africa get clean drinking water, but I do not think it is financially viable to do so by bottling water here and shipping it across the ocean.  The increased usage of diesel fuel from cargo ships carrying the bottled water would also contribute to the global warming we are all so concerned about.

If you're worried about clean drinking water in Africa, there are many ways to help people out in Africa. Including by donating for clean water wells, desalinization plants, filtration systems, and other devices to gather clean water.

So as you can see, I do not believe I have wasted any water as it came from the ground right where I dumped it on my head, and went back in to the ground right where I dumped it on my head.

Man, that was a long intro
Heh yeah it was, but I've seen longer ones. I figure it was best to let people know about matching grants before the actual ice gets dumped on my head, rather than afterwords (since people are more likely to listen to what someone has to say before they dump the water).

Yeah, those are kinda funny though. The number of youtube hits are well worth the bucket of water I'd bet.

Someone should challenge Satoshi  Roll Eyes
Technically, I did.

How does dumping a bucket of water over your head help ALS?  It doesn't.

Dumping the water is what you do in lieu of a donation.  All these people proudly showing off how they would rather not donate money to a good cause.   Undecided

Agreed... It's like those "walks" that people always put together and it makes no sense. How does walking for a cause like cancer help a cause? People already know about cancer, it's not like someone was like, "Cancer?! wow, thanks for walking, because if you didn't walk that 5k, I would never have known what Cancer was...".  I've known lots of people who have volunteered for walks/charities and the "entry fee" always gets gobbled up by the advertising, flyers, shirts, water, police fees, registration tent rentals, etc. The charity gets pennies on the dollar... This ice bucket challenge has wasted over 6 million gallons of water.

I helped on this project a few years ago, pisses me off that people are pouring water over theirs heads when people in other countries can't get a glass of water.

The quality is horrible, I don't know what they use to record these videos. Most of them have horrible quality. Are celebrities using older phones?  Roll Eyes

This is the best ALS challenge and makes most sense if you ask me. I don't know why people think bad about Charlie Sheen, he has definitely proven that he is a generous person ($10,000 donation) and smart/funny. He even called out others to do this the same way that he did!

Smart guy.

Guys this is pretty despicable. ALS is a real disease that afflicts hundreds of thousands of people worldwide, and affects the lives of millions of people connected to those with the disease. This challenge -- whatever you may think of the specifics -- has helped raise $100m for research. That is phenomenal! I don't know how any one with a good heart can criticize that.

And yes, we all know someone that was afflicted by this disease. This community owes a huge debt to Hal Finney and I would suggest anyone who cares about bitcoin to take the challenge or make a donation of any size in honor of that man and our debt.

I'm an independent developer working on bitcoin-core, making my living off community donations.
