the owner of Freebitco.in doesn't seem to be able to explain himself with anything longer than vague one-sentence blurbs...

Does anyone know what he is talking about here?

What does "unlocking" the +18 satoshis bonus even accomplish, and why does my progress dial back a few percents every time I check??

Right now, I just kept buying lottery tickets every hour, but whenever I check again, the progress seems to go back by minus ~2 percent somehow.

The percentage towards the next bonus increases if you wager or buy lottery tickets and decreases if you play the free roll.
As that percentage is decreasing, so the effect of free rolls you have played has been bigger than effect of your wagering volume and lottery tickets you have purchased.

If I'm reading this correctly, say you bought 10 tickets and there were 90 other tickets sold making 100 tickets, you'd have 10% of the share.  If you bought another 10 tickets and another 90 tickets were sold then you'd still have 20/200 = 10% of the tickets.

Now you buy 10 more tickets, but 790 tickets were sold, you have 30 tickets and everyone else has 970 tickets.  The percentage you have has gone down to 3% of the tickets sold.

That +18 is the base reward on freerolls. Currently at 18 satoshi every hour when you click roll.

You can increase it by 20 times, each time adding the same amount as the base amount (which changes with the value of BTC, it's actually currently 0.2 cents base). To do that, you've to wager. Every wager brings you closer to that freeroll bonus, and every use of the freeroll take you down a bit (on mine, it's about 0.5% of that progress brought down every roll).

Try wagering and never claiming and you'll see that percentage only climb.
