I think any means of communication over the internet is fine, as long as the right tool is choosen for the right job.

Most of my complaints are never due to the choice of communication, but rather due to lazyness and poor responsivenes of project team members. That's why I've started to be very selective about who I work with. Once you work with good people, you could communicate over any channel, but when something has to be discussed, skype (audio/video) can sometimes be faster than a lot of other things, apart from that I think e-mail and forum is good, and of course im's are okay as well.

I still prefer IRC for text and TeamSpeak for voice, but I use Skype as well. I don't usually care about video chat, but it can be useful.
